The Easy Run Engine Test stand, invented by my friend Al in California, is worth its weight in gold for GYC. Saving the time and labor of engine pulls by running the engine prior to installation is the only way to go.

No one in my shop was ever allowed to pour gas down a carburetor, or twist a distributor back and forth on a first start. Static timing an engine, and making sure there is fuel flow is not difficult even on computer controlled F.I. engines. Engine noises can be isolated with a stethoscope, or listening through a long screwdriver. I've never rebuilt an engine that ever knocked or failed on startup. These folks are incompetent, and would not last in my shop more than a day.

Wasn't that Daren's car you bought off him when you let him go. To start with Royal was right instead of concentrating on the top end the motor should of been pulled apart to see what was wrong and the new parts you just replaced wouldn't have to be bought again. The oil would of told the story when drained and a days effort not lost. But MARK is always right in the long run sitting next to the sand blaster wasn't a good idea no car with a new rebuilt engine should be any where near a cleaning area unless it's being washed and waxed.

They sandblast a lot of parts. If there is any oil or grease in hidden areas the sand sticks to it like glue. The roloc discs shed a lot of grit also.

In 1970 I bought a Duster with a 340 3 speed on the floor. It didn’t have bucket seats, no decals, no carpet, just a AM radio and no AC. It was a total sleeper and I loved it because it was fast and yes it was just a funny green color.

Can you believe, in the early 1990's, my friends and I would buy these cars from the local wrecking yard for $500? Then we'd buy a 440 from a truck or motorhome and be driving a hot rod in less than 10 days for under $1000. If we were as smart as we thought we were, we should have kept a few and retired early 😉

Having literally grown up in the back seat of a 426 max Wedge 4-door Polara, Mopars have been in my blood. To be honest, I have to side with Royal on this one; The moment I heard that knocking sound I'd have shut it down and gone through a full engine tear-down. I understand the pressures of being a shop owner on an overdue timeline but it's not about getting the car to the client, it's about getting the car to the client without issues. You learned a valuable lesson in this build regarding assumptions, normalcy bias, attention to detail, quality control and forgetting to listen to your instincts. I am glad that in the end everything worked out. If I wasn't a broken soldier, I'd be in Oregon working at your shop and loving every moment bringing these great cars back to life. ~A Fan for life

1980, PCC Rock Creek, community college, rebuilding a '58 Harley (mine) in the "small engine / motorcycle" repair course. So I'm bead blasting cases, cylinders, heads & more. My teacher says to me "ya know, you'll never get all the residue off" that freaked me out, so I wrote (yes, a letter) to Easy Rider magazine & said WTF? I see in the mag descriptions of the bikes and a lot of time cases & heads are listed as blasted (as opposed to polished or chromed) Well dang if "Wrench" their tech guy, didn't write me back and say "yes, that's correct, but if ya boil it in soapy water and clean the heck outta it...no problem". So, who's the "sandinthepan" man?
