Homotherium were larger than mentioned, the largest of them were potentially the largest of sabertooth cats..

I disagree the comparison of homotherium and cheetah. More so the hyena. Homotherium was built like a hyena and apparently filled the hyena niche.

More like a hyena/lion hybrid

Homotherium had long legs like cheetahs, but with more bulky built, and the largest of them were potentially the largest of sabertooth cats...

America already had the 'American cheetah' to fill the Africa/Asian cheetah role. Homotherium filled the hyena role. Studies of the skull, particularly the huge nasal passages, show that it was a long distance runner with endurance like the hyena and not so coincidentally was built like one. Remember also that hyenas are related to cats.

@@francorepici3586 I would think Homotherium filled a niche unique to no other animal alive today. No animal in Pleistocene North America were specialized like bone crushing hyenas. Being stronger than a hyena one v one and having serrated teeth to cause “shark like” bites. Their hunting & social intelligence is akin to lions, hyenas, & canines. Respectively, for the ambush, grappling, ‘finishing blow’; and the latter two for pursuit endurance techniques. Finally, cheetahs in diurnal hunting. Homotherium likely only stole prey when in numbers, having a size advantage and if there was enough reward for risk; especially for their cubs back at the den. They were more akin to lions in stealing prey, while canines along with hyenas will eat skin and bones, homotherium wouldn’t waste that much time. They need calories for multiple family members hunting is a more advantageous idea. With all those abilities Homotherium was likely a ‘grim reaper’ of the Ice Age. I’d suspect one of the highest success rates of all known cats.
