Writing this script was a huge challenge, I did my best to show the context and all the moving pieces that led to this outcome. Imagine trying to organize all of your friends to go on a field trip half the world away that has never been done, during one of the most chaotic times in Europe. Then the main organizer of the event dies and only a third of the people show up. Along the way many had doubts, but most kept on going just so they could get it over with and they all failed. Alexios IV didn’t last, the crusaders never went to Jerusalem and Venice missed out on establishing ports in Egypt. As for the Empire, no matter what happens after, it was a shadow of its former self. I recommend rewatching the first episode of the series to truly understand why this side quest didn’t come out of nowhere. I will be here answering your questions so ask away :)

While the maritime republics were constantly enterprising in everything they could do, the greek noble houses were just fighting themselves and in the end they had to become reliant on the republics. Venice got many commercial bonuses after saving the byzantine ass from the norman fleet, still the ungrateful byzantines managed do kill the latins in the latins massacre. So yes, it's totally acceptable.

In many ways, I've considered this the true end of Byzantium. After the Nicaeans retook the city in 1264, it was little more than just a small kingdom, dependent on the whim of its neighbors. That it was able to linger on for nearly 200 more years is actually a testament to the diplomatic skills of the Byzantines.

That's not really true. By the end of the 13th century, they had emerged as a fairly significant power again. The first 2 Palaiologos rulers pretty much managed to restore the pre-1204 territory of the empire (or perhaps even expand it), but for sure, the sack proved to be crucial in the long run. However, they were still in the game, there was everything to play for, before the empire descended into endless civil wars.

Not really Manzikert, because the losses could be recovered from, but civil war that followed. Byzantines had the same problems which plagued the late Roman Empire, which were internal conflicts and constant civil wars for status of emperor. In the end their biggest enemy (as usual) were themselves. Even Sack of Constantinople started from one pretender enlisting help of Latins to fight another pretender.

Well, the Angeloi became a thing because Andronicus I, the last of the Komnenian emperor was a complete nutjob. Although it doesn't excuse the Angelids for being terrible emperors, but it's worth noting that the latter Komnenians were partly responsible. Alexios III and Alexios IV are kinda tied when it comes to worst Eastern Roman emperors, but Alexios III came out to be more abhorrent because he blinded his own brother for the throne, and was the reason why Alexios IV did what he did. On top of that, Alexios III was the only one out of the emperors of the Fourth Crusade who got away pretty much scot-free (Alexios IV was strangled to death by order of Alexios V, Isaac II who was by that time a frail old bloke died due to mistreatment by Alexios V, and Alexios V was blinded by the b*stard Alexios III and executed by the Latins for the murder of Alexios IV by being thrown off the Column of Theodosius).

Byzantine is a modern historical term meant to differentiate between the classical period (~753 BC to ~476 AD) and the post classical period (~476 AD - 1453 AD). Some people will debate that the fall of the Roman empire or civilization was in 1204 or 1453 AD.

I really don't like when people forget about this era and just go straight to the capturing of the city and the entire empire by the Ottomans. Yes the Palaiologeans were not Justinian,Macedonian or Komnenos Dynasty level of "good times" but the empire after the recapture of Constantinople by them was fairly stable and good up until the 1340s that is.

Actually no it didn't. Ottoman conquest happened due to other factors such as massive Cannon and going around the chains. Ottoman did siege Constantinople before Sultan Fatih so no crusader sack didn't help.

Seems very few understood what I'm saying, alright fine I'll explain. The works of the ancients which were found as copies in both the library of Alexandria , Constantinople and some others I think, contained the most advanced knowledge of humanity and philosophy. Any culture that possessed them was to be expected to be highly cultured and morally intelligent people. Indeed in ancient Rome they were very into all the works of most famous greek scholars and this is why often the elite class of Rome spoke mostly ancient greek. Does the behavior of the Byzantines depicted in this video reflect any resemblance to an advanced and highly cultured people or even resemble in any way their roman ancestors?

@@KingsandGenerals I really hope you can be more in depth for the battle of adrianople 378 AD. Simon macdowall presents a very detailed account of the battle of adrianople and debunks common myths. Especially the strength of the army at the battle was not as high as expected. It wasn’t a circle of wagon forts either. It was more of a line of wagons. We must take into account there were large communities in the gothic camp. To make a large wagon fort would stretch it too wide to have a circle. The goths most likely place their troops ahead of the fort then pulled back behind the wagons. Valens shouldn’t be as incompetent as tends to be emphasized on the narrative. He was arian christian which makes sense that it was easy to blame him for the defeat. Gratian also didn’t have a large force as one might assume. His force traveled down the danube with boats. Which implied it was a tiny force instead of a large one. He also delays reinforcements for months due to an attack on the rhine the moment he pulls his forces from the rhine the lentienses tribe attacked taking heavy casualties. He also stops at sirmium for 4 days due to fever then gets ambushed by alan forced at the camp of mars. I think it was a sound decision to offer battle to the goths as they keep getting reinforcements on the danube by alan and hunnic contingents. The longer valens waited, the more bigger the enemy force grows.

*How come the crusaders of the fourth crusade were able to sack Constantinople but the Muslims couldn’t until 1453?* The Crusaders were able to sack Constantinople for 3 reasons: They had alliances with parties inside the city They were allowed to approach the city unopposed They got a little lucky Basically, they didn't take an armed and opposing city in 1204, they slipped in through the cracks of a civil war, and engaged in more than a bit of backstabbing. The Muslims never had this relative advantage. They always faced a united defense, that had an existential edge of desperation granted by religious fervor, and was backed by a generally hostile hinterland. It's also vital to recognize the relative importance of naval power. In both 1204 and 1453 the Byzantines raised their chain boom, but in 1204 it was largely undefended, while in 1453 it was so robustly defended that the Turks had to move ships overland to get inside of it.

Actually the city was much better prepared vs. a siege and much better defended in 1204 than it was in 1453. In 1453 the siegers outnumbered the defenders 8 to 1 and succeeded only thanks to the artillery, in 1204 they were evenly matched and without artillery. Simply the Venetians were the best in siege warfare.

@@kingmaverick3140 If you watch the video you'll realize that you are wrong. in 1204 Byzantium HAD a navvy, even if a weak one. In 1453 Byzantium had NO navy. The 1453 "navy" had been a bunch of transport civilian ships that voluntereed. Simply they were commanded by much more effective Venetians and Genoese commanders. In 1204 Byzantium HAD an army. In 1453 it only had a citizen's militia and some international volunteer (mainly Genoese and Venetians again). In 1204 attackers and defenders were evenly matched. In 1453 the attackers outnumbered the defenders 8 to 1 and had MUCH more artillery and of MUCH bigger calibre vs. walls that were not build to withstand artillery. Simply the Venetians were THE BEST in siege warfare.

The 1204 sack of Constantinople was a watershed moment of history. It resulted in the end of the Byzantine Empire and they couldn't recover from this disaster. This video was beautifully made and it showed how much damage this event caused to the history of the Byzantine Empire. I am super excited about the discord channel I joined it today so I may be a little behind lol, however history is my favorite subject and I love learning it!

1204 Sack of Constantinople was 100% the reason of Eastern empire's downfall. They abandoned the only reason Europe didn't become Arab/Muslim for a millennia just because they were too butthurt with the Byzantines for being Orthodox, speak Greek instead of Latin, being more sophisticated (Theophanu Sklerena taught King Otto's German people how to use cutlery and bath every day) and honestly, being the actual legacy of Ancient Greek and Rome.Not to mention the unholy part that the Church played, in both West and East.

Some interesting info: Bulgaria never actually became catholic. It entered a union with the Catholic Church known in Bulgarian as “uniya”. As this was purely a politic move to gain more legitimacy by Kaloyan church practices never changed and remained orthodox. A side note, I noticed that in 15:20 Philipopolis is shown as being part of Bulgaria although Kaloyan actually took it after the sack of Constantinople and the subsequent battle and siege of Adrianople in 1205. Stanimaka on the other hand was indeed in Bulgarian hands. There was also more fighting between the Byzantines and Bulgarians during the reign of Alexios III, but this was obviously not shown as it is not the main topic of the video.

@@Beef_3E No. They didn't reach the Holy Land because the fourth crusade is not a crusade in everything but name. The fourth crusade was basically a mercenary army who fought for Venice. Venice achieved their objective. They made themselves the biggest economy on the Mediterranean and basically destroyed Byzantium. The crusaders got mad rich and the ones who stayed got lands and titles for themselves. It was a total success. And the fact that you mention the holy land shows you don't know much about it. Here is a fun fact: the main target wasn't the holy land. It was Egypt.

@@Beef_3E It wasn't internal strife. It was debt. And then Alexios IV made them an offer so good they basically couldn't refuse. If you want to blame anyone blame the Constantines. Alexios III and Alexios IV basically doomed their own city. The crusaders were a mercenary army that didn't get any payment. What do you think they were going to do? Go home empty handed just having wasted their time? Besides the Byzantines themselves weren't any smart either. You know what triggered the Sack of Constantinople? A riot caused by greeks when some crusaders (few, not even reaching a hundred) entered the city. The crusaders defended themselves and well things escaleted.

The greatest beneficiary of the 4th Crusade, in my historical analysis, was obviously Venice (La Serenìsima Repùblica Vèneta), the "queen of the Adriatic" ("La Regina dell'Adriatico"), as I like to call it. The Doge Enrico Dandolo, in my historical analysis, was the greatest beneficiary of the division of the Byzantine Empire in 1204 (Partitio Terrarum Imperii Romaniae/Partitio regni graeci). Moreover, Enrico Dandolo even received the title of "lord of one-quarter and one-eighth of the Roman Empire" ("Dominus quartae partis et dimidiae totius Imperii Romaniae")! After the 4th Crusade, Venice acquired and added Crete and the Island of Euboea (Negroponte) to its overseas possessions (Stato da Màr), which represented one of the three subdivisions of the Venetian State. The 4th Crusade, therefore, was a watershed in Venetian history.

Ottomans made the best out of it. They "caught fish in the murky water". Seljuks, Byzantines and Crusaders had weakened each other. And it was not Ertugrul or, Osman/Ottoman of Kayi, many other tribes also declared independence from a weakened seljuk (due to Mongol invasion).
