As with all the discussions and explanations in the various SSPX presentations---this is extremely useful, illuminating and edifying. SSPX, please continue to create such videos because many people live a half a day drive from an SSPX chapel. Many people (such as myself) live prohibitively far from an SSPX chapel and we do not have access to in person good counsel from SSPX priests. The various "series" that you all have been producing have been absolute godsends and profoundly enriching for me.

I'm a convert. The Parish I attend doesn't do a formal, separate RCIA, but they were, at the time, conducting an adult continuing Catechesis class once a week. The first year, it was the Great Adventure Bible program, and the second year was the Church History program. I didn't realize at the time how much wasn't in these two programs, but the Parish priest said that it was sufficient to be my RCIA. I really enjoyed both classes, but if I DO start attending the TLM, I think I would like to be further catechized, partly because of the differences between NO and TLM, but more because I'm the result of the deficiencies in catechisis rampant in the post-conciliar Church.

@SSPX during Covid our Bishop did not lay hands on the confirmandi or anoint their foreheads with his thumb but rather dipped a q-tip in oil. I wondered at the time if it was a valid sacrament. What are your thoughts?

I have some questions: 1)If balsam is not used during confirmation, is the confirmation valid or doubtful/invalid? 2)how do you know whether is there balsam in the chrism? Can you know it by the smell etc? Like when u approach the priest for confirmation u kind of smell it for example...can you? Because as far as i can remember, i dont smell anything during the confirmation...so i wonder is the balsam present or not 3)since St Thomas mentioned the Trinity in the form etc In the novus ordo the Trinitarian formula is not present Therefore may I say it is doubtful and thus I should do a conditional confirmation with the Society? 4)What are the requirements to do conditional confirmation with the sspx? (For my case, idk whether is balsam used, priest did not slap, it was a novus ordo formula without the mention of Trinity) 5)if i am doing a conditional confirmation, do i need to have the same confirmation name and same godfather for the NO one? Or it can be different? I can just pick a new name? Thanks!

1)If balsam is not used during confirmation, is the confirmation valid or doubtful/invalid? Such a confirmation would most likely be invalid since the balsam is most probably essential to the chrism. In practice, the chrism without balsam would be treated as invalid matter. 2)how do you know whether is there balsam in the chrism? Can you know it by the smell etc? Because as far as i can remember, i dont smell anything during the confirmation...so i wonder is the balsam present or not Usually the person being confirmed will not smell anything. Neither does the fragrance always have a strong odor. One should not assume that balsam is missing if they do not smell it, nor entertain worries about its absence since there has not been a change in law regarding its need. Abuses can always happen, but the presumption is in favor of the use of balsam. 3)since St Thomas mentioned the Trinity in the form etc In the novus ordo the Trinitarian formula is not present Therefore may I say it is doubtful and thus I should do a conditional confirmation with the Society? No, the form of the Novus Order has the essentials: the sealing (character) and a special grace of the Holy Ghost. The form used in the Traditional rite is no older than the 10th cent. Before that others were in use. It seems that there was no uniform formula in the east and west for some time before that. The exception would be in the Greek churches which have kept a form much like the Novus Ordo form ever since the 4th century and it is considered a valid form. 4)What are the requirements to do conditional confirmation with the sspx? (For my case, idk whether is balsam used, priest did not slap, it was a novus ordo formula without the mention of Trinity) The doubts which you have mentioned are not enough to ensure grounds for conditional confirmation. The question of balsam touches validity, but again, we can’t assume that balsam was missing. The most common basis for a conditional confirmation would the specific type of oil (should it be other than olive oil) consecrated for the sacred oils. Also, the minister’s intention would be grounds if it is known that he doesn’t consider Confirmation a sacrament. 5)if i am doing a conditional confirmation, do i need to have the same confirmation name and same godfather for the NO one? Or it can be different? I can just pick a new name? You would have a bit of freedom here to choose. It would seem best to keep the same sponsor as long as he fulfills the requirements of the Church and also the same name.

@@SSPX Thank you for the reply. On the issue of balsam, I will try asking the Novus ordo side whether was balsam used. Also, i got another concern and that is the imposition of hands while annointing/signing. The NO priest did extend his hands but he place it on the side of my head (not on top) I will try asking him see whether he intends to merely support his thumb for the annointing or his intention was to impose his hands. Because i remember i did ask something similar to the priest that confirmed me a few days before the confirmation, but i asked vaguely. I asked 'Fr will you put your hand on top of my hand when annointing' He said 'no' But anyways i will ask again to double confirm. So if they say balsam is not used or the priest say he is not intending to impose his hands during the annointing, am I allow to get a conditional confirmation? Thank you

I don't think we should try to be perfect for the sacrament. (It is not christian, it is pagan ascetism trying to be perfect.) We are made perfect by the sacrament.

we should always try to be perfect..just as we should try to be saints.. we will never be perfect but we are made perfect by grace and will gain heaven by God's grace.. it's the effort that counts....humility is the key.
