Early Christian music was clearly influenced by Jewish music, from which it took up the rich tradition of sacred chant as well as the example of liturgical chorality. Medieval music still showed signs of its ancient oriental origin.
With the Renaissance, but first and foremost with the separation of the Church of the East from the Church of the West, Christian forms of expression took different paths for a time: while research and innovation developed in the West, a tendency to preserve the original characteristics prevailed in the East, so that even new compositions generally followed in the wake of tradition.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, there was a rapprochement on the expressive level, most recently documented through the great feat of the Hungarian Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967), who succeeded in transfusing the spirit of the popular religious tradition of the East into his daring and highly modern compositions.
A concert in ten languages, documenting the spread, in the footsteps of the apostles, of music born of faith: from ancient Hebrew hymns to Byzantine psalmody, from medieval chant to the dawn of polyphony, always following the main vein of religious vocal music, we arrive at the work of Kodaly, whose evocative texts rest on a demanding and arduous harmonic fabric.
