Sacred Economics traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has contributed to alienation, competition, and scarcity, destroyed community, and necessitated endless growth.
Today, these trends have reached their extreme - but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and sustainable way of being.
This short contains some visuals from the upcoming feature doc Occupy Love occupylove.org

Michael Robles: Aristotle's critique of the sophists largely centered on their tendency to only share their teachings with the ruling class, for money and prestige. In that sense Eisenstein is much more a philosopher, as he shares his works freely, in keeping with the spirit of gift economies. Claiming deception without argument is just an empty ad hominem attack dressed in a fancy word.

In a few years I'll be in my mid 20's and I have one thing to say to people like Charles: You don't know. You don't know what the earth can sustain. You don't know how big is too big. And you certainly don't know what is best for man kind, if that is one of your points. The best thing about being alive is that we can always change our ways and find new ways of doing things. There is no correct answer or direction to go in, only choices and consequences.

Beautiful! Adopt an economy that starts with mother earth as our center. “Our task to align money with our true expression of our gifts. Oneness, sharing in the commons for the common good, will include peer to peer revolution. Awakening into mass consciousness.

Hey Charles, was just revisiting your magnificent manifesto after signing up for a clinical music certification with Harps for Healing today. Your short film moved me so much once again; felt the need to say "thank you, Charles....keep going!!" and also to send it to all of the men in my life;...which now includes my 14 years old son. I am so very grateful for so many things...thank you for helping the world understand and believe in gratitude.

I could not stomach the money economics class I took to fulfill a requirement. After watching this excellent film I know what I was longing for was to study a type of economy that made more compassionate sense for all -- the Gift Economy in which one gains status by giving away excess to those in need. That is an economy based on the truth of what it means to be human. The money economy is an illusion based on a lie told by those it most serves.

I don't think one gaining status by giving is helpful. I especially like UBUNTU. Michael Tellinger created a system whereby we all get off the grid and simply contribute our effort to the whole. It takes about 3 hours in a system with 5000 people. The rest of the time is spent on creative endeavors, not work.

4/2/20 - how prophetic this was to watch it today. "Bigger and bigger disasters will hit until we wake up" -or something like that. Yes, that is true. We are in the birth canal not by choice by many of us - but because Mama decided She was done waiting on us to realize our needed experiment of separation was over. time to be birthed into a new world, a new economy a new way. What was just one month ago is collectively ol' school today. The way in which the world understood health, money, community - done. Now we are each being asked to figure out how to evolve into the new. Whether we are ready or not. Thanks for getting the doorway open for us Charles!

I appreciate your optimism and POSITIVE message. Something America has become so cynical about as of late. Geo Political Landscaping should be faced head on like Buckminster Fuller said. "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." Let the Golden Age commence. Join in or sit aside and wait. The current "status quo" is a debt based model that creates more conflict with its divide and conquer consciousness. Is that what you all really want?

+Stunami I agree with fuller. From Ben Hur (I know it was just a movie, but): "How do you fight an idea? With a better idea." Capitalism in the sense of competition has its advantages--often better products that can benefit many. But Socialistic modifications (medicare, social security, minimum wage, etc) allow us to help others in need. These are different mindsets with different & predictable results. Small societies have shown us how to live with a "we" mindset rather than an "I vs you" mindset. I think we are too big a society to change as a whole. But groups of us might be successful with a different economic system.

EVERYONE has needs. part of the problem is assuming that those who have less materially are more "needy" than those who have more. i have known homeless people who would faster give me the shirt off their back, than a church in all its supposed "benevolence" would give me a pair of socks. in this case, who is needier, me, the homeless guy, or the church who cannot loosen its grip on a material item it has no use for? some socialist modifications are designed with the understanding that we are all workers among workers, that we all contribute to the greater good. and yet, better products and services should be inherently advantageous. value systems should probably be reconfigured so people can understand what the objective reality is.

Civilization is NOT a mistake. We are goodness, love and light and we are all one. Those entities that have taken control of humanity are what is causing all of our strife, not us. We will begin to heal once we all remember who we are. We are one. We are connected. We are infinite.

THANK YOU CHARLES, & YOUR COMMUNICATION COLLABORATORS ... for openly sharing the gifts of your insights & for your humilfity. It's refreshingly inspiring to beleive that human healing, clear thinking & our conscious actions can draw on ancient experiences of human & non-human communities. This is also similar to epi-genetics ideas of creating a healing space, by acknowledging our inter-connectedness within our ecosystems & social systems, including by actively demonstrating our gratitude attitude ... for the many healthy aspects of functional communities, social connections, & ecosystem services that have too often been relied upon in enhancing our lives, too often without actively seeking to maintain & enhance the vitality of these healthy living beings & systems.

I think most of us are waiting for this shift. We keep talking about it but what are we doing about it? 1. consume less and start being more self-sufficient. 2, Return to nature, our most valuable resource and source of inspiration. 3. Learn to live in the present moment and eliminate conflicts that arose from past events and stop worrying about the future. 4. Keep an eye on your own contribution to this madness by not being so greedy and envious of others. 5. Question everything. 6. Be free!

The gratitude and recognition of the nature's gifts are paramount to the economic theory he presents. To call them silly or pointless is missing the point of "sacred economics" entirely, while disrespecting it simultaneously. Its more than economic theory, its a worldview and philosophy. Who is to say that the sun, moon and earth were not designed for us, or any other creation for that matter? sure we're not the centre of the universe, but gratitude for things we depend on is key.

The short video covers most of the basics in clear terms. However, do we forget that people had it right for thousands of years. It is not a matter of people learning a new way but re-learning an old way. Just ask the indigenous peoples (the remnants that are left)...a gift economy, community, co-operation, working with nature, sharing and all the rest.

So, for all interested, I suggest reading Structure of World History by Kojin Karatani. In it, Mr. Karatani examines world history through the lense of modes of exchange between communities/individuals. Mode of exchange A is the gift exchange, B is essentially the state, C is capitalism and D is a return of mode of exchange A but at a higher level. It's a good read, if a bit dry at times... Btw I do not want a fully gift based economy and/or society... Gift exchange based societies weren't all peaches and roses. They were in constant warfare with their neighbouring communities (unless an exchange was established) and had no authority to stop things like vendettas (vendettas=type of a gift exchange).

IM glad you used the correct word "entity" for they are not human. In 1947, one of their ships crashed in New Mexico, they said 'take me to your leader." and the leader was military leaders, not political leaders. Its not just a change or shift in behavior, its a fundamental shift in thought, belief, and emotion. Each of us can be the change we seek.

To see life as a gift has nothing to do with belief or God. Gratitude is a very pleasant emotion, like joy or laughter, that we can actively cultivate in our lives like any other. Gratitude in particular is very good at facilitating a sense of belonging and community. And the emotions we choose to cultivate--especially gratitude--have a direct impact on our ability to express our gifts to the world, our outlook on life, and even our ability to succeed at our endeavors. Gratitude is inspiring!

It's in the nature of nature to give and receive freely. Humans are not any different. If you observe it's what we give others free that gives us more joy than anything else. For example, we don't put a price to our "love" for our "loved ones". We give love them free. And we receive love free too. All of the works we do for our "loved ones" are done free too. Money-system is an anathema and an unnatural growth on the body of mankind that has cost him more than all other common threats.

When Eisenstein speaks of a "social dividend" he speaks of sharing the wealth from what "should be the commons, the land...". What he is talking about here is implementation of the idea fully articulated in the late 19th century by the American political economist and social philosopher, Henry George. The idea is to change our tax systems at every level possible to tax land values all of which are created 100%, wholly and only by the community of all people.

Thank you Charles for your insights and deeply thought provoking questioning into a powerful topic "money". I am aligned for the greater part with what you say, and feel that humanity must evolve past a defunct scarcity based traditional monetary system. I am doing all I can to teach people how to re-orient their relationship with money in a more conscious and life affirmative way.

I love the sentiment of this video and think that anyone who wouldn't want to live in a world where differing people can live peacefully side by side and in line with nature must be dead inside. However there are no simple answers. For example, the first questions raised in this video are 'why is there a biodiversity crisis' and 'why are we drilling for oil'. The answer given in the video is money, but in advanced societies it is our desire to maintain our technologically enhanced lifestyles that causes these problems. Industry provides our securely built homes, transportation, hospitals, medication, entertainment, communication and enough food no matter the weather conditions. This Industry is causing damage to our environment and it would carry on doing so if all we did was remove money.

Two things he said:Life is a gift and we need an economy based on truth. An economy based on truth does not need to be created. It has been created already by the same creator that gave us life. The reason humans are in the state we are in is we inherently will not accept the fact that we are not the arbiters of truth. As long as there are humans who will not submit to truth, corruption will exist in the system and it will fail.Money is not the root of all evil. Humans are.It was once said "There is nothing new under the sun." Like a dead end in a maze, this utopian path has been tried and failed so many times. One thing you will never hear from someone advocating a different system...the plan for those that don't fall in line.

One reason this film is not going viral is because I have been trying for 15 minutes to get it to post on my Facebook page and it is not posting. I even entered the address to share with people on Facebook and it was erased.

you are the first person to say things I have been thinking over the last few years. there is an old teaching the love of money is the root of all evil. this is key knowledge. I encourage you to keep moving forward and continue your inspired meditations it takes to have these thoughts put in words. words are spiritual. I would love to meet you and talk in person sometime. it is hard to find people who will talk about these things. I think it is because most people love money.

As much as I like a lot of the things Charles states and I imagine he's probably very friendly in person... I don't know if he understands how important it is for people in general to have at least the bottom 2 rungs of Maslow's hierarchy of needs taken care to even have the capacity to worry about these large scale, long term, societal and global issues Charles speaks about. For many people, probably most people, these forces of trying to survive, getting your basic needs taken care of, and taking care of a family are treated as a higher priority, when all the money and marbles are on the line, than trying to behave ethically and morally and finding spiritual meaning. I'm not saying ethics and spirituality aren't important, but to speak about global crises with a strong focus on ethics and spirituality while not really acknowledging how most people need their basic needs taken care of to even have the capacity to worry about these issues, is I think a hole I see in many of Charles' lectures and arguments. At the end of the day, ultimately the biggest factor that dictates how stable, peaceful, and healthy a society is depends on the level of abundance compared to scarcity the society provides to its population, and how much the population perceives and feels they are living in abundance as opposed to scarcity. Charles integrating this important piece into his work would I think very possibly improve it, as great as it is already :)

I think the idea is that most of these people who struggle to survive, to meet their primary needs, are in this situation precisely BECAUSE of the capitalist society that we live in. If it were more of a "gift" society, everyone's needs would be taken care of, and people wouldn't fall through the cracks. So I think in order to get out of it, you have to start somewhere ; and maybe if those who do have their primary needs met who can begin to change the way they live, then it would lift all of society up as a whole, including those in poverty struggling to make ends meet. I don't think Charles expects everyone to start thinking about spiritual meaning and ethics, and I totally agree that it is impossible for people to do that if they have to focus on meeting their primary needs. But if those people that are relatively comfortable in terms of basic needs started to change their mentality and live differently, then society would begin to change, and I think the effects would ripple down right to the people struggling to meet their primary needs.
