Sacred Economics traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has contributed to alienation, competition, and scarcity, destroyed community, and necessitated endless growth.
Today, these trends have reached their extreme - but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and sustainable way of being.

"We are going to see a series of crisis moments, each one more severe than the last, and at each crisis moment, we will have a collective choice: Do we give up the game and join the people (and reconnect with the living planet symbiotically)? Or do we hold on even tighter? It is really up to us to determine at what point this wake up point will happen." - Charles Eisenstein

Other simple solutions that can be applied right now: • Corporations pay their fair share of tax • Abolish tax havens whilst dropping tax rates for small businesses and sole traders • Stop bail outs of large multinational corporations and banks • Stop funding illegal wars • Halt the speed of globalisation to help countries boost their Gross National product Thanks for reading.

Nothing wrong with any of your suggestions, but they require political power to achieve. We need to break free from the current paradigm and make government irrelevant, not turn to it to solve the problems it created.

all of these sound great... problem is, it ain't gonna happen. Corporations have insane amount of money so they mingle with politics ( by financing their campains ). Abolishing tax heavens is imposible, cos every country has right to make their own laws. Stoping bail... nope, its much cheaper to maintan failing banks and corps, then to allow them to fall. Stoping funding illegal wars would be damn nice. Last one is sort of happening, like EU is doing it.

@@CanyonsCrags Nothing wrong with saying we need something else and there's a bigger problem, but you should share SOLUTIONS too when you bring up new problems. Lucky for you, I have such solutions to break free from the current paradigm and make government irrelevant. . . . In 2 hours you can discover a new kind of consumer behavioral economics science technology that can solve poverty, re-inclusively visualize politics, orand mitigate existential human crisis. Google "#hOEPHeart" to find solutions, and all of U humans together can profit with less anxiety and more hope. If you buy things, then you can learn how to get more for your money, your time, and your values. If you sell things, then you can find research on how to make more profit by loving poor and wonderful people more. If you are sad, or If you are worried about the economy and inequality, then we have a solution to share with you. If you fear robots taking away your job, or collapse of economy, or religious fanatics, or political revolution, or healthcare costs, or Universal Basic Income, or housing scarcity, or ecosystem devastation, or earthly cataclysm, or global warming or existential crisis or extinction causing asteroid or extra-terrestrial alien invasions or God's plan or anything at all, then understand your not crazy, and then DON'T PANIC yet because we have a completely voluntary, highly profitable solution plan for you to consider or contribute towards or profit from that we think might reduce any panic or anxiety and bring hope in your future soon. hOEP♥ (hOEP < 3, #hOEPHeart, hOurs Equals Price ) is a novel price discount system and human value exchange communications protocol for sellers and consumers to love and profit from. hOEP♥ allows any retailer or seller to make more profit by giving poor, and wonderful, and deserving people price discounts. The more sellers discount price for deserving, poor, or wonderful customers, then the more profit a retailer can make. hOEP Heart is expected to produce an exponential increase to the productive efficiency and distribution efficiency of any market place or market economy. With repeated use by consumers and retailers, it will produce a fractal patterned egalitarian distribution of wealth and resources in the customer demand base. Inequality will be drained from the market places by sellers seeking profit first. hOEP♥ technology, designs, and research is offered freely to all. MOAP>3 (Multi-factor Open Access Price, more then free) is a novel price discount systems information architecture and communications protocol system for sellers and consumers to love and profit from. MOAP>3 allows any retailer to enable convenient and negotiable group purchasing and provisional purchasing. MOAP>3 is ideally suited for profitably purchasing large and extremely large ticket sale items such as a new home, city infrastructure or HyperLoop, or civilization scale projects such as an artificial magnetic shield for Earth to protect us from extreme space weather. New Features include changes to encourage rapid and extremely rapid mobilization of very large scale resource and human time intensive multi-disciplinary research and development projects of a civilization scale price and value. Also added is extensible architecture with wisdom compartmentalization features for Pluralist Economies and more robust Universal Continuity of market operations in unusually diverse or adverse human value market exchange networks and environments. Focused use of economic nudge price formula convert fear, discontent, unrest, hate, and other powerful motivational metric factors such as love and hope into positive actions with verifiable results at a large profit for all. MOAP>3 envisions a system of price discounts for whatever behavior results in net benefits to others. Whatever behavior or personal characteristic generates the greatest net benefits (benefits minus harms) gets the greatest price discounts. Government can profitably transition into a smaller role of being the dominant and default price tag formulae and solutions provider for purchase of national security products and in geopolitical security related market places. Geo-political social inequality will be drained from the market places by sellers and buyers seeking profit first and demand for a price formula that outcompetes and out performs many status quo government solutions. "MOAP, more then free" delivers on the promise of smart discount coupon and price tag technology AI and is being developed by affiliates and expected to be offered freely to poor and wonderful and deserving people and business and governments on a sliding price scale. #hOEP4MOAP Main website at sites.google.com/view/the-hoep-project

Truly thought-provoking! As communities disappear, people are also unwilling to create new communities that embrace 'strangers', especially with people who enter and have needs, for example from war-torn zones... or zones where wilfully created chaos has led to the destruction of communities. We are in a depressingly self-destructive cycle indeed.

I certainly resonate with everything he speaks of here. I am so appreciative of how he has presented the information. There is a shift in consciousness. There is a new earth and a new way of being and operating in the world in the minds of awakened souls. The power must come back to the people. Where we use our gifts to love and care for every living species mostly the earth. It’s time for great awakening and healing first before we can implement new paradigm shifts. Charles my friend has also traced the history of money and of institutions he is at UCL Chris Cook Senior Research Fellow Chris Cook Following an early career in the UK Department of Trade & Industry, Chris was a market regulator at the Association of Futures Brokers & Dealers, and then at the International Petroleum Exchange (latterly as a Director). At the IPE, he developed successful new trading mechanisms such as Exchange of Futures for Swaps; Volatility Trades; and Settlement Trades. Chris now works mainly in Scotland, with Nordic Enterprise Trust, to develop new partnership-based enterprise models, and related financial products and services. His work at ISRS is focused on a new generation of networked markets - which will, in Chris's view, necessarily be dis-intermediated, open, decentralised and, therefore, resilient. In rather than institutions as organisations/legal persons and also simple promissory credit instruments (prepay), which takes us into the realm of 'community fintech' based on people-centred, other than machine-centred agreements. In doing so, I coined the neologism 'Nondominium' for agreements defining the property relationship between stakeholders (eg land users, investors, managers) in which no stakeholder had dominant rights over the others. nondominium.co.uk/

FWIW, according to cultural historians, revolutionary changes in culture come from the margins, not from the mainstream. Offering up views which differ requires confidence in those views, no matter how much they strike at the root of the problem. (Many find it far more comfortable--and profitable--to just address symptoms.) The human contingent of Earth is desperately in need of visionaries and from where I stand, Charles is pretty grounded--but not suffering from the rigor mortis of lack of imagination. I hope you find similarly, but if not, may you find a vision that makes you come alive. And may you go well!

What if ?... story...or Archy of All (not just Family-Banking-Intelligence LLC) and An-Archy by Everyone... For a while now I am toying with an idea that ties to the fact that current economic model is like a Monopoly game. Few (or only one) win the game and all the others loose. Since I've only recognized this fact - as if it is a product of societal development and not trying to correct it, - I will now try to develop a simple adaptation, an idea for the future of the world economics. World of free market that would be as fruitful for the people as could be. And would recognize all the effort and sacrifice of the previous generations. Lets reset the "game" then Really reset it, not just tweak the margins. Lets evaluate all that mankind (infrastructure, hardware and knowledge) has accumulated so far. How much is its global worth? Could everyone who is alive right now be a millionaire (in whichever currency)? Lets say we live 100 years and a year has 10 months. That is 1000 months in one's life. If every person at birth is to be given a million (a new million is created by the birth of a new child), he/she would have 1000 units of that currency per month to spend until death. At death that million would be taken out from circulation (individualized money that has your number on it). Question arises: Is this reset good for an individual? Those without the land would have to buy the food. But now the farmers could be in position of independent price forming (getting paid properly for their labor). And with extra money they could directly finance robotics developers who would crate robots that benefit farmers directly (not BostonDynamics "hyenas"). And that would earn those robot developers extra money for food and leisure ... and ... the cycle begins. ... Those who work manually and/or with their brains would accumulate money that could then be invested into new projects of their choosing or leisure. And those who don't work and have no innovative ideas would loose money. If you invest wisely, disperse in many benefiting inventions (and not spend all on food, housing and clothes) you get rewarded with the influx from products that were developed and sold as result of your investments. But remember: whatever you do with your money, wherever that million ends in those 100 years, all your money will be erased after you die. So there is no danger of inflation, there are no central banks needed, there are no banks at all, since there is no interests possible, there are no money lenders, there is no Ministry of Finances that regulates currency flows and no taxation from the state, since there is no money related bureaucracy. The People invest in what they consider worth or necessary investing in and in amounts they judge appropriate by their discretion. And this "monopoly game" has its Objective that is different from to-days economic farce: Aim is not to win by grabbing all the money (the few or only one winner) and thus ending the game, but to play the game as long as you can (the game never ends) while intellectually and emotionally enjoying it. Of course this idea is "just plainly ridiculous" at first glance. And at second. But what if...? There couldn't be more and more currency in circulation. And no arbitrary printing of money by/for the most powerful actors. There would be as many millions as there are living people. Once I've died, all the currency with "my name on it" (my serial number) becomes worthless and is taken out of circulation. Essentially one would start with a million, gradually releasing it into circulation and died taking one's million out completely. And since, during individual's life time, his/hers money has been dispersed, those holding small amounts of that money at the time of death wouldn't "suffer" much of a loss. An Individual would be encouraged, from the start, not to overindulge (1000 point per month doesn't make you infinitely rich) and to live by the motto of 'creating new quality that benefits all' (action that attracts outside investment). Also there would be no need for the State to exist in such a megalomaniac form of bureaucratic regulatory capacity (with standing armies and Intelligence apparatus) that too few individuals would be willing to support. And the problem of intellectual property would fall away also, if there would be none. All access to knowledge would be open. When you create a new code for the worker robots to operate better, you get paid by the investors/investments and later by the sales. One time operation, without any long turn royalties. If someone is prepared to use your already realized idea and works on its further development, that someone gets financially rewarded (new investment) for that particular improvement or for work on replicating that product (sales) and has no extra protection. Development would be driven by the real needs of the People (investors and/or buyers) and all the needles product would be financially discouraged (no consumerism mentality). The People would be initially forced to invest into sectors that satisfy their basic needs and make them more price affordable (food, housing, clothes...) and only then would begin investing in the indulging lifestyles. By giving everyone a million at the start of their life would ensure 'fair play starting position' for everyone and destroy any need for 'vertical social mobility' and 'horizontal exclusivity' cartel associations. Maybe one additional feature of such individualized currency ("million with your number on it") would be possibility of tracking the future use and movement of money you've spent. To see what your money is doing out in the real world is very "regulatory" on its own. As I've said, a very bizarre idea on the first glance and second, ....but what if...? If there are to be 10 billion people on Earth by 2050`s (watch any of Hans Rosling`s presentation of world statistic), then all the currency in circulation would amount to 10 quadrillion. That amount would be more or less constant, since the global population's exponential growth of 18th-20th centuries has already essentially leveled at future constant number of 10 billion people living on the planet. A million more ore less wouldn't change anything. What really creates inflation are the Central banks creating new money by new loans (private and to governments) in amounts of new trillions. And interests on that money lent. And all the financial derivatives and future's gambling financial investments. That casino mentality would be all gone. Together with stocks. Money/currency would be the only "stock". John Doe's million would be created only by his birth, no other reason for creating money would be allowed. So, if the population will have leveled at 10 billion people around 2050, then amount of money in circulation should be relatively constant. And then ... THE questions to answer, for every individual, await: What kind of a world do you want to live in? What will you do to realize that future? After asking those questions, it is your individual "free choice to develop" that future with your money's influence. Money as a 'Future Creating Tool', a tool that is today reserved only for the "chosen" ones (the rich monopolists), who regularly reset the (Monopoly game) system by creating financial crises and property/resources acquisition. Oh, if you are wondering what would become of today's billionaires and trillionaires, Earl John Doe the III`s? ...Well...they would still have a million of their own after this reset - a real re-set and not this phony re-type advertised as re-set by trillionaire Banker Families - just like all the others. This is my what if...EVERY MILLIONAIRE? story. If it doesn't resonate with you, please, move on to others. Or add to it. .................................................................................................... P.S .: People who cherish freedom should run away from UBI - universal basic income - that is tied to your social credit score ("value") and is meant to enslave you permanently and fully. If money is to be given for free to everyone, than it (must be printed) should come in one big chunk and not as monthly allowances. And people should also refuse the Block-Chain technology since it is The Tool for the ultimate and complete chaining, not just in the Money domain but in all aspects of social interacting.

But have you ever think wheter gift economy will work for 7 billions people on earth? It seems this idea can only work in hunter-gatherer society (or any society with small number of people) because only in that condition you can put your believe in someone will repay your todays deed with something in the future.

It works over time where status can be built and maintained, i.e. reputation. In a global village, in my opinion, we need a system where reputation can be established and conveyed even outside of your immediate environs. I sort of have an idea already of how this could work. Think of it as collecting 'brownie points' instead of money, that then you can use to attract what you need. People will low brownie scores (i.e. not gifting, sharing, having something of value to offer) will have greater difficulty attracting what they need, because people will see they are taking more than they are giving. So there's still a sort of accounting taking place, but it just doesn't happen with money. You already use this system as an adjunct to our money system now. It is called 'feedback' or 'reviews.'

Sorry Re/Culture films, you lost me with that bit towards the end. Adding politics to this remixed vid feels somewhat divisive and supportive of the very “separation” which Eisenstein illustrates is part of the perpetuation of scarcity. I will not share this version but I WILL share the original kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3a9nISsZ5qoe9U, which is already perfect in its expression.

that wasnt' the point. The astronauts were struck with the beauty of seeing the Earth from space in the act of ultimate alienation. We DO know that they encircled Earth.

Of course I 100% agree on what we always have to look for improvements in all the aspects of our existence. But this guy is 100% missing the point and contradicts himself very grossly. He starts the video talking about the gratitude is innate to all of us for being alive, but he fails to feel the same gratitude for all the things this "modern" and "evil" human civilization has produced and that make the life of this guy (and all of us) much better. This guy completely forgets (or, what is worse, omits) that 100 years ago 99% of the world population lived in poverty. This guy forgets the the high rate of child mortality, and that the life expectancy was around 40 years. This guy forget about the high ratio of illiteracy, and the miserable the health care options for most of the population. The list is endless. This guy is unable to acknowledge how much our civilization has improved the life conditions of billions of people. It is very sad to see that the only example that can put on the table is that "children are not supposed to hate Mondays"... Come on!! That is the typical statement of the typical first-world idiot that has never missed a meal, and has never lacked a roof over his head.

I agree that modern civilization has improved the quality and quantity of life, but it has been at the expense of others around the world and the planet, and will eventually be at the first-world’s cost when resource scarcity become even more common (there could be wars fought over water), as we are approaching our maximum growth in terms of population. At the end he recognized that “modern” civilization is the result of us testing our talents and creating, and I don’t recall him explicitly calling any of those creations “evil,” but rather an exercise of our talents. The very talents and innovations that we can use to move forward. The money economy that he condemns is part of the reason why millions of people are starving around the world and lacking basic necessities, that we in the first world take for granted. A first-world idiot wouldn’t recognize the issue of consumer culture. They would be someone who is ignorant to the fact that good has come out of the destruction, but consequences far beyond our understanding has too. I believe this is what he is trying to tackle and systemic issues aren’t always easy to address with so many cogs in the wheel and perspectives to balance. Furthermore, there are many people in first-world countries, particularly this year, who missed meals and didn’t have a roof over their head.

@@isabellerose310 I am sorry, but I cannot agree with most of your comments. For example: "The money economy that he condemns is part of the reason why millions of people are starving around the world and lacking basic necessities, that we in the first world take for granted". People stave much less now than 100 years ago. Poverty has been dramatically reduced in the last 100 years, not only in the first world, but everywhere. Look at China or India. Of course there is still poverty, but nothing compared to 100 years ago. So all those problems that you mentioned existed (massively) before the implementation of our "money economy". If any conclusion can be inferred is the opposite: all those problems has shrunk because of our "money economy"

@@juanrandsonian2949 Exactly. The poverty rate has gone from over 3/4 of the population to under 1/10th since the 1800's. The greatest setback to the continuing progress in reducing poverty is due to the self-inflicted crippling of the "money economy" because of covid. It's great that we can all stay home for a year and print money to send to China to keep the Amazon trucks full, but guess who's desperately missing the benefits of capitalism in 2020 - poor people around the world. We definitely need a massive change in our consumption mentality, and crony capitalism will justly suffer in a world where people stop allowing politicians to manipulate us, but when a system produces greater prosperity for more people than ever before in history, you don't bulldoze it in order to exterminate the rats.

@@isabellerose310 The capitalist colonial State creates a lot of myths to justify its existence. Meanwhile, in my college textbook, 'International Political Economy', it stated that the average purchasing power of someone in the world's richest country and world's poorest country in 1900 was 7 to 1. In 1980 it was 750 to 1. Now? Holy hell, I don't know but i'm guessing on the order of 10,000 to 1. Oxfam has been documenting the exponentially increasing consolidation of wealth into fewer and fewer hands. These facts and statistics directly contradict your myths about poverty being eliminated by technology and modernity.
