The point with Matakara is that he sees arajin as a brother figure too. So that is why he is so attached to that image of him that he thought he knew. It is basically like he lost his two brother figures at the same time.

The concept of honki people is essentially an emotional crutch for Matakara. The shadows feel like a metaphor for how he's been sensitive to dark thoughts since childhood and the stories his brother told him helped combat those inner fears. Without close family (he's been officially stated to not have parents) and without his brother, this is the last thing he has to sustain him mentally. And as a child, Arajin was part of that coping mechanism. It isn't necessarily right or healthy, but it does make sense that in such a cruel world, Matakara would want to pursue this kind of pure ideal of strength to avoid the pain of reality.

Honestly at this point in time I think the show is going to start picking up, we've got most of season one here and we got our characters and know how they are and what their flaws are and their respective honki people. I think by the end of season one and into season two we'll see some character development from both Arajin and Matakara, and I hope we get a season two because honestly I really love the show, it's premise, and characters and I want to see more and see these characters grow and change and come into their own. Season one here is just setting the stage and season two I think is where things will pick up and we'll be seeing progress from both Arajin and Matakara. Sorry for the ramble, though loving your reactions still to this series and hope you guys continue to watch and enjoy it.

To clarify a bit more I do think we'll also get some character development near the end of the season 1, but not much as we're still setting the stage and really getting into the meat and potatoes of everything finally now that they both have Honki people. Excited to see how it all goes down and hopeful for a season 2.
