12 years ago I put the S&S setup on my 98 Softtail Custom and it lasted 3 years then did the same thing. A riding buddy had the Ultima system and decided not to use it. He sold it to me for less than he paid. I've been running that for ten years set on single fire with no issues. Guess not everything from S&S is top notch. Thanks for another good video.

Saddle Tramp... The difference between long life and short life is location of the module...heat will kill any brand of ignition module located in the nose cone (note exhaust header location) quicker than one located beneath the seat....the single fire vs.dual fire argument boils down to preference...I have a Daytona twin tech in my 99 heritage classic set up for single fire....my 73 Superglide has the Dyna dual fire set up for kick start I installed it in 2011...I held out from going electronic with my Shovel based on what I was hearing about how unreliable they were...well that might have been the case at one point in time.... what I found was the availability of good points and condensers was becoming a problem especially after Napa auto parts left town...so off to Truett & Osborn for an electronic ignition system....been good to go ever since....

Been watching from Australia for some time now. I have a 1988 Heritage softail that was cutting out on me too. After swapping my ignition from a oem to an aftermarket unit. Turned out it was the regulator/rectifier. Since then no problem running a compufire system. Keep doing your great videos.

Did it have a short or just not charging? I've ridden a long way with mine disconnected and just running off battery power and the ignition has run fine without charging system . They don't use as much power as people think.

Thanks for the video! My 88 FXSTC would shut off when it got warmed up. My coil tested out at 3 Ohms.. so that was good.. voltage regulator is good,, cleaned all connections to the coil etc: The cam sensor plate was never taken off so I drilled the rivets off and the cam sensor was melted. I cant wait to order a new one tomorrow. Glad you showed that you have to feed the wires through then push them into the new plug! Man.. I hope I have the same results as you. I've had the forerunner to that S&S ignition (CRANE HI-4) on my '84 FXST since 1998. Knock on wood, it's still going strong! I bought that bike, used, from the original dealer, in 1988. The motor and drive train was stock: Keihin butterfly carb; header pipes with cross-over and restrictive mufflers; and stock ignition (the shiny stuff was installed by the previous owner). Over the years, I've had many different exhaust pipes on her (my favorite was the 2.25" Samson drag pipes) - but I currently have the Paughco 1.75" 'Shotgun' drag pipes because they 'just work' with the Baker 6into4 kicker tranny that I installed 4 years ago. S&S Super G carb and intake, that replaced the Keihin carb and OEM intake manifold. Lastly the Crane HI-4 ignition, that replaced a Dyna-2000, that replaced the OEM ignition. Between the S&S Super G, the HI-4 ignition, and the free flowing pipes, it starts a HELL of a lot easier than it did stock! My HI-4 has 2 trim pots (rev-limiter and rear-cylinder timing) and 2 DIP switches (kicker/electric start and VOES/high-compression). With the DIP switch set for kicker; normally, 2 twists of the throttle, roll her over, and she's lit! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH7Mp52tnbGVa7s In this video: (You can see the Crane HI-4 in action.) 1st start in over a year. LAST year: I set out to replace the starter clutch; old rusty lifter-blocks, and dash-plate. I had it half done, when work got in the way... THIS year: New starter clutch; new Wood Performance W6 cam (I was in there anyway); S&S reed style breather valve; S&S 'natural' lifter-blocks, and Drag Specialties dash plate. (The reason she spins over so fast: I installed an All Balls high-torque starter motor, in place of the OEM Hitachi motor, when I put the Baker in and I power it all with a Shorai Lithium battery.) That puddle of oil under the breather-filter isn't a problem! When I got her out on the road, she didn't leak a drop of oil! Unfortunately (for me); timing, and carb jetting need some attention!

When it just dies and stays dead it is usually a transistor or capacitor that has died or croaked because of thermal runaway. When it dies when it gets heat soaked and then starts again when it gets cold it is usually a coil that has a break in the fine wire (it reconnects when it cools down).

thats whats mine is doing, intermittently dies, then starts right up, so what coil? are you referring to? the igntion sensor had the light brown insullation melt off so im replacing that whole sensor inside the cone.

I used to use Accel ignitions, but had nothing but problems. I switched to Ultima because I need a quick cheap solution. Never had a problem with them, they are relatively inexpensive, and offer a system with both single fire and duel fire. I'm running one on my '95 Fatboy and my '75 Ironhead

The original OEM ignition of my 81 Sturgis is lost in time, at the moment it has points but these cannot be adjust to give correct timing. This winter I am putting a Dynatek in, but I'll make a little parts kit to carry on the bike so that I can switch back to points on the side of the road. I am an electronics engineer with microprocessor and power electronics experience, if the Dynatek gives me problems I will build my own ignition system from scratch.

I ran a Dynatek Dyna S on my 96 Evo for several years without problem, and currently have a93 Evo with Harley Screaming Eagle ignition.....also no problems.......of course, this could change, what with Mr Murphy hanging in the background.... :) Oh...if the Screaming Eagle dies, I will go back to a Dyna S....they are simple and easy to install.

@@Sailor_Man_Musicits done by take the timing plug out of the crankcase on the left side. Two marks on the flywheel. U have a line and dot . rotate the engine counter clockwise . until the dot is in the center of the hole. Right after front intake valve closes. Time it off the front cylinder the dot should be 34 degrees bftdc. Advance the points cam all the way to the right. Points barely start to open on the small lobe . tighten all done

After you ride that stock setup for awhile and get used to it, do yourself a favor and install a Dyna 2000i (in the nose cone) with the Dyna coil and run it single fire. I think you will be impressed. I did that many years ago on my 1995 FLSTC and I have had no problems with reliability and I have no desire to go back to stock. The 2000i has "real ignitions curves" and works well with the VOES to retard under load (while still giving you a "real ignition curve". I've experienced great performance and reliability. I believe the new ones are also programmable. If anyone has had reliability issues with the Dyna 2000i maybe they can comment.

Every aftermarket ignition ive had has shit itself eventually due to heat in the cone cover,even the original pickups from harley. It gets hot in there and the insulation breaks down and melts out . A lot of times you can feel the sticky shit at the cable entry point in the cover. At least the harley pickups are fairly cheap compared to the rest the aftermarket stuff and normally the ignition box is still in working order afterwards. Crane,dyna,spyke,s&s all had heat breakdown problems. I now run a standard pickup and a screaming beagle box and no problems after 9yrs,in a '88 evo fxr. Best of luck with the changeover, you won't regret it for reliability. Cheers from an aussie.

I blew my stock ignition on a trip to BC a few years ago (1984 FXR) Went to the HD shop in Cranbrook and bought a points conversion kit, comes with advance weights a points plate and points, put it in on a friends lawn and finished the trip. They say the electronic coil doesn't like it due to different ohms, but it got me home and then I put in a Dyna S Single fire, it uses the same advance weights. If you have a points conversion in your saddlebags, your never stuck, try that on a twinkie!

Had very similar troubles with my OEM H-D ignition plus hard starting problems which sucked since I have a '77 Shovel 4-speed kick-only transmission. Couldn't afford a good magneto setup, so put on a Compu-Fire ignition designed for high compression Evo kickers and both problems cleared up, plus eliminated the brain box and some wiring. Been working sweet for 14 plus years.

A lot of EVO riders boast about the benefits of aftermarket ignitions. I have always stuck with the factory ignition due to its dependability, simplicity and I have multiple spare timing modules that I got for nothing.

I'm thinking with your day job background we can both agree HARLEY DAVIDSON has spent much more money on test and development than any aftermarket company. When I ask you last year what or who's parts did you use on your bikes you replied OEM . That's words of wisdom in my book. I think slip ons and oil filters can be sourced out along with tire brands on a Sportster. Anything above a Sportsters fighting weight in the tire class Dunlop has worked hand in hand with HARLEY. If he still has the vacuum petcock tell him to replace it with a non-vacuum one. The ethanol that they put in the gas nowadays eats up the rubber diaphragm. The bike will act like it is out gas and quit running with gas still in the tank. The same with a CV carb. It will eat up the diaphragm that controls the slide.

Any time you are unsure if its the carb or the ignition ..try choke it as its giving you problems .. if it starts running better ..or gets worse it at least partly in the carb or fuel divery .. .. sime way to get a direction to start ..
