I'm from Afghanistan and I went to Shaolin Temple in China 5 years ago. One of the important thing I noticed that Chinese people really respect the fact that Budhidharma is from India and he brought this shaolin culture to China. This video is exactly how I have been taught AND experienced Shaolin kung fu. We regard Bodidharma as the first patriarch of both Shaolin kung fu, chi kung (internal aspect) and zen. And before him ofcourse the line of teachers back to the Buddha. Unfortunately the current Shaolin temple in China is a tourist trap. I mean no offense, it is a great wushu school but the essence of Shaolin was almost eradicated from China in several instances from before the fall of the Qing dynasty and especially the cultural revolution. Fortunately the arts live on outside China and in China itself several Daoist schools still maintain a very high level. For those genuine in their searching, when you are ready a master appears. Don't limit yourself - genuine yoga, kungfu, Taoist arts - different brands but the same essence. They are humanity's greatest treasures.

I remember going to stay at Shaolin Temple in 2000. Hard training. Bodhidharma's Cave is up on the hill above the Temple. Dhyana was pronounced "Chan" by the Chinese and Chan Buddhism spread to Korea where it is known as Seon and then onto Japan where it is known as Zen. We can say that Shaolin was the first Zen Buddhist Temple. This is a great connection between India and the Far East. Also, later the Chinese Monk Xuanzang in the Tang Dynasty travelled to India to collect the Buddhist Sutras. India and China and the Far East share strong spiritual links.

Yoga actually means discipline. So there are many types of "yoga". The martial arts disciplines were banned by the British in India. Martial arts also existed already in China when Bodhidharma arrived, including at the Shaolin Temple. Taoist masters, as well as Chinese military had their own styles for centuries before Bodhidharma. What made the Shaolin Temple unique in regard to martial arts was the monks practiced every day, all day, for most of their lives, and so were unparalleled masters. With that reputation, many martial artists from all over China, and the world, went to study with them, and in turn shared their own styles. The Shaolin Temple was the first time all these styles got fully documented, and their training was systematized.

The important part of this story is that bodhidharma had laid the foundation of the patriach lineage of his teaching called Chan Buddhism, which illuminates the Mahayana and vajrayana teachings. However, because the Chinese had not understood the meaning of his visit and had not listened to his wisdom he had only left them written teachings, which later had to be translated into Chinese by another Indian monk that was in China at that time. Bodhidharma continued his journey back to central Tibet and taught the Tibetan people his wisdom of the vajrayana teachings.

From an Historical scholarly perspective, or any other for that matter, there are a great many versions and accounts of these histories, depending on WHEN/WHERE & from WHOM these "historical re-accountings" are sourced. The vague & oversimplified story here is a popular one and asserts the Indian Buddhist connection/origins of contemporary popular Martial Art systems throughout Asia. Bodhidharma ‘’達摩‘’ went to China to teach the Zen meditation method, we consider him the first patriarch then came down to 6th generation where it blossomed. Before Bodhidarma left Shaolin temple to leave for pilgrammage he left some yogic breathing exercises for the monks to practice to strengthen body and for protection, e.g. "Bone changing classics" 《易筋經》and "Washing tendon classics" 《洗髓經》. Then over the centuries, martial arts developed on its own inside the two Shaolin temples, and likely some travelling monks (even laymen) across China when visiting the temples should have also contributed to the volume of these Shaolin martial arts.
@komedykingdom Жыл бұрын
Almost all historians and scholars who have researched the history of Kung Fu have refuted the myth that Bodhidharma created Shaolin kung fu because there are numerous contradictions in the legend and a wealth of records showing that the monks themselves created their martial arts. No document ever mentions Bodhidharma knowing or instructing the monks in combat techniques. This is the section that is propaganda for India. Bodhidharma was neither a soldier, a warrior, or a doctor; he was a "zen teacher". At Shaolin, he gave Buddhist dharma lessons. It is a widely held belief that Bodhidharma taught the monks the 18 yoga forms, as per Shaolin's own narrative, instead of the Indian art form known as "Kalaripayattu", which is plainly never recorded in any record. Despite Indians' claims that "Kalaripayattu" is the oldest martial technique in the world, it is only mentioned in documents from the 15th century. Bodhidharma could not have accomplished it because he passed away in the sixth century, even if historians date it to anywhere between the ninth and the twelfth centuries. According to the monks, the genesis date of Kung Fu is likewise inflated, as there is no record of the monks practising their own martial art technique while Bodhidharma was alive. In truth, there is no record of Shaolin boxing until 1610, in the book 'Exposition of the Original Shaolin Staff Method,' authored by "Cheng Zongyou", who discussed the roots of Shaolin's martial skills and stated that its origins lie hundreds of years before the publishing of the book. Kalaripayattu is great and super, its the origin of shaolin kungfu but shaolin kung fu little by little developed into different forms that are unique. Base was kalaripayattu. From kalaripayattu and Buddhism shaolin kung fu also got the influence of self awareness, energies etc. Later from shaolin influence wudang kung fu, tai chi developed.
@alexdavid8545 Жыл бұрын
No, Wudang KF doesn't come from Shaolin or Kalaripayattu. It comes from Taoism and native Chinese MA that predate Bodhidarma by many centuries.

Same thing for Tai Chi. Zero connection to Indian Martial Arts.

Shaolin records of Kung Fu do not mention Bodhidharma or learning martial arts from Indians. This Bodhidharma Kung Fu story is only a Taoist myth from the 17th century. 🤭

An Indian tradition regards Bodhidharma to be the third son of a Pallava king from Kanchipuram. This is consistent with the Southeast Asian traditions which also describe Bodhidharma as a former South Indian Tamil prince who had awakened his kundalini and renounced royal life to become a monk

The Chinese have their own Chinese Internal Intrinsic energy fighting systems; however these systems only show great results after long years of practice. The yogic system Bodhidarma introduced brought more immediate results, but have undesirable effects in old age whereas the indigenous system had no such . The Buddhist monks at Shaolin were impressed with the “ fast results “ and paid no heed to the undesirable effects at old age as the younger ones were impatient. Later on, the Shaolin experts were able to incorporate the original Taoist qigong system into Bodhidarma’s system. So it is wrong to say the Bodhidarma brought kungfu to China. The iDravidians have their kalaripayat, but the Chinese had their own authentic native qigong and internal martial arts. The Taoists are not showy, and their system do not produce the athletic musculature which enthrals the impatient youths who looked for quick instant noodle results but might contain pitfalls at advance age.

One thing this guru doesn't mention is how several historians now think Kalari was invented from the blending of Macedonian Pankration techniques with India's native wrestling and sword styles because there's a lot of similarities to be found, even with Shaolin Kung Fu. Every culture practiced wrestling of some form. Every culture practiced boxing of some form. Every culture also practiced weaponry of some form. The armies of Alexander the Great, being made of so many nations, seemingly made the first blended martial arts which aided their success (along with their famous troop tactics) up until they couldn't fully take on India due to the extremely extended campaign and the size of the Indian armies, thereby leaving some of their leaders and soldiery in the places they did conquer there while the rest of the army retreated back to Persia. It was hypothesized that these soldiers introduced the changes which were pretty radical from traditional Indian wrestling (Malla-yudda) and then the Indians iterated on it with Kalari, and then the Chinese iterated on it again with Shaolin; each adding and taking away things, but keeping the core traditions.

@sachinawasthee175 Жыл бұрын
It's "around" & not "precisely". So it's around 15th or 16th century. It would be contrary had he said precisely or not said around. 😊
