The scrappage scheme is complete bollocks! You only qualify for it IF you are BOTH on a low income job AND claiming benefits. And even then you only get something like £2,000 at the most. Majority of compliant vehicles, second hand, are at pushing 10 times that amount and now the demand for them has gone up, so too have their prices!

London has one of the biggest and busiest airports in the world(Heathrow). I can't even think how high the emissions from all the aeroplanes are. Also, you have Gatwick to the south and Luton to the north, both of which have flight paths across London. At least cars have catalytic converters and DPE filters. If pollution is the real issue, then the mayor needs to sort out the flight emissions first.

Most struggle to afford it if they have to drive to and from work every day. What is missing from Khan's explanation is the number of people earning less than £10,000, and the number earning between £10,000 and £20,000. It could be that there are only 100 people in each category, so it would matter not that 70% of them do not have a car. It still leaves 30% who do. Still doesn't mean that ULEZ should be imposed on us all. He believes that by reciting it incessantly he will make it true and proplecwill believe him...

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a full time, contract job and if you work agency, you dont get benefits. We exist. We're not made up. Accept it. Let me break it down for you. Most agency workers get let go as a lovely Cristmas bonus right before the end of the year. Companies enter a slow period between the end weeks of December and the start of the new business year in April. That means the number of jobs drops sharply for those 4 months. A lot of those workers will be unable to find gainful employment for that period. For those individuals they will end up working, unwillingly, an 8 month year. Based off a 48 hour work week of 12 hr shifts, 4 on 3 off, at £8.60 (Min. wage went up this year. YAY). 3/4 year employment you will earn around £16,000. Last year it came to £14,000. This assumes no sick days for injury. Now imagine paying rent or mortgage, utility bills, car maintainance, and food on top of this and you can see why people are struggling. Worth remembering, if the average UK wage is 35K, and yet some people are earning 100K+ or even millions a year, that means most people earn less than 35K, and some below 20K, and an unfortunate few less than 15K. Not everyone is average. Think of the outliers. PS. also note jobseekers only works if you have zero savings. As soon as you have 3K in a bank, a mere 3K, you get NOTHING for jobseekers. What is amazing is nowhere in UC does it ask you how many debts you have. Hillariously, if you had a maxed out credit card with 100K debt and 10% interest, but 3K in savings, you dont get anything between jobs. Thats a -97K debt... but you get no financial support when between jobs. This always makes me laugh. Litterally as soon as your job ends, be sure to wipe out all your life savings to clear as much debt as you can, or you dont get to eat that week! Just pray your car doesnt get written off by a drunk driver, or the boiler doesnt break down. I'm sure it'll be fine! "♪♫ All ways look on the bright side of life! ♫♪"

Sadiq Khan’s, to reduce toxic air by expanding the ULEZ to greater London will not work. He doesn’t really care about toxic air quality and here is why: - He has already made the toxic air far worse since he has introduced the LTN’s which have increased the toxic air on the main roads because we are forced to use them as there are no other alternatives, especially during rush hour. The roads are now grid locked with traffic moving at walking pace and the fumes are getting denser and not dispersing. LTN’s need to be reopened as it is causing more damage than good. Among all this, the mileage in vehicles has also increased due to the fact that we are forced to go the long way round to get to the required destination - all accumulating to even more emission being emitted! Bravo Sadiq & team. - The health for pedestrians and children as they walk along these main routes to get to stations, schools, shops is deteriorating. Even the drivers inhale more fumes when we are stuck in stationary traffic. This is really aggravating and makes no sense! - Cycle Lanes: Should not be taking up an extra lane of the roads, large pavements could be divided into two for cyclists. - The introductions of 20MPH roads are also a problem because emission fumes don’t disperse quickly and the air is getting even more polluted because of the need to drive in lower gears. Sadiq’s statement: “It is to reduce toxic air pollution” is clearly not accurate and is making matters worse. The situation is getting extremely out of hand and something needs to be done to stop him from ruining our climate even more. He should resign and Londoners should vote for someone who will make London a greater and more desirable place to live in. There needs to be a more logical and strategic plan that is well thought. I left at 7.10am, and got on site at 8.45am! As you say not being able to use side roads, 20mph zones and the fact in that area the Hammersmith Bridge is STILL shut 3yrs later, the main roads simply can't cope, it's insanity.

With cities no longer designed around the pedestrian but the car, suburban residents are much more likely to own vehicles, as they are physically removed from city centres, which are themselves vehicle dependent spaces.. poor people do own cars, many of whom can't afford them, but own them out of necessity. Khan and his TFL research looked just at what they call the "doughnut" surrounding the existing CC zone and Ulez, and came to the conclusion mid 200k cars would be affected. The RAC have done their own research with data from the DVLA and simply counted up the cars not ULEZ legible and came up with a number around 650k. Do we even need to ask which group is lying/manipulating the truth?

A simple question....even if one could afford to replace their petrol/diesel vehicles in favour of an electric car how on earth are we expected to charge the vehicles if a property does not have its own driveway? Those numbers quoted by Khan must include those on minimum wage in the first years of their employment. Back in the 1970's I was young and did not earn enough to even think about an old, secondhand car. I'm now a pentioner, and like so many others we tend to keep our cars for longer, and now will fall foul of the ULEZ expansion.

I agree, he probably doesn't understand outer London because he doesn't go there. He does however fly over it quite a lot. Khan, his deputies and officials are thought to have clocked 360,000 air miles since he he was first elected in 2016. Generating an estimated 23.1 tons of CO2. His publicly-available flight expenses feature trips to the US, Zurich, Mumbai and Warsaw. His more recent trip to the Buenos Aires C40 eco-conference added another 14,000 air miles to that total. And he has the nerve to preach to us about emissions and climate change.

“Huge scrappage scheme” that’s a joke. I applied to scrap my van to put towards the purchase of a compliant van, even though there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. I was refused on the basis I purchased it February 2022 so I do not qualify. That’s how much he cares about ‘clean air’ I’m screwed!

Grew up in Bexleyheath - had a car as soon as possible. Moved to West Oxfordshire where you need a car, particularly with three children & a husband that worked distances we had 2 until the teenagers started driving. Following a divorce & moving to Rotherhithe we got rid of the car & have not had one for five years but we have a great public transport system here! Not in Bexley, Bromley, Sutton, etc. We also have a car club that allows us to visit Oxfordshire to meet my family. One cannot equate life in central London to the poorly served South London having clay, poor public transport options and a serious requirement to own a car. I voted against the extended ULEZ

The elephant in the room is the cost of public transport, only this week TFL admitted in it's own report, London has the most expensive public transport fares, IN THE WORLD. A single bus fare, £1.75. The underground has become so expensive we as a family no longer go into London. And Khan loves to cherry pick figures that suits his argument. '78% of people who earn under £10k don't own a car.' What % of that figure is people that don't drive, choose not to drive, can't drive etc etc. Cherry picked figures always need pulling apart and analysed. Khan doing what he does best, avoids and lies.

This push to ban cars is all about government power. Coal and precious minerals are required to generate electricity, so banning petrol powered vehicles is contradictory as there will still be air pollution from continuing mining operations. By the way ev batteries cause more pollution when they are being recycled for the very little minerals recovered.
