Extremly funny that I am sitting here, in Munich, at work, which is in the Anton-Bitt-Bogen and if you google, you will see, that my bureau is about 20 m (yes 20 Meters) away from BMW Motorcycle. Funny, because I bought myself a 1250 GSA and want to know how to charge her, without using the DIN-Connection and am looking at you, explaining this wonderfully and sitting on the other side of the word in Australia. Very well done! Thank you! Greetings from Munich

Hi Nick wish I had found your vide 2 hours ago as it would of saved me a lot of wasted time. Having owned two air cooled GS previously I decided to buy the new Pan America Special. Big mistake because I didn't like it and traded it in for my first LC GS. Brought a new Optimiser lead and decided to fit it. Well as you know the battery positive lead is a nightmare to get to and after trying to ram lead with fuse box into a small space and not able to get inner cover back on I gave up and stripped it all out. But now I see from your video that I should of connected to the screw under the red cap. Every day's a school day. You Aussies always sound English to me 😉😂 Ted You've got another sub now. Thanks.

@@theboomerangbiker1966 You (and Clint Eastwood) picked one of the most beautiful spots on the California coast! We live about an hour from the Carmel/Monterey area. Riding “over the hill” through the redwoods and out to the coast is definitely a favorite ride. It never gets old! Thanks again, I really wanted a “direct to battery” connection and you made it easy. Carry on. 👍

HI Nick a better way is to swap out the DIN plug from the handle bar with a usb port, then move the DIN to where you had you plug zip tied to the side of the frame.

Hi mate, thanks for the tip. My method works better for me, I already use a DIN to USB adapter in the cockpit to charge batteries in my tank bag. I use the SAE direct to the battery to for charging the bike battery and for taking power out to charge my drone batteries in my tailpack via a 12v-240v inverter. Cheers, Nick

Hey Nick…. I’m so confused. I see all these videos of guys like you installing SAE and DIN outlets on their GS. I have a new 2022 GSA and it has a DIN to CANBUS and an SAE already installed. I use the SAE to charge using my optimate 4. Is there any reason I would install another SAE with the inline fuse?

@theboomerangbiker1966
@theboomerangbiker1966 4 ай бұрын
Yes it does, on the dash but it won't run a compressor without tripping the canbus and you need a canbus specific optimate to charge the battery and they aren't reliable. This solution bypasses the canbus. Hope that explanation helps. Nick

Dear Nick please help me out, I am the proud owner of a R1200GSA. I went to do what you have by fitting a SAE plug. I was told that it would damage the electrical system on a BMW. Unless you buy a BMW CHARGER. Please help me out I’m confused. Thank you
@theboomerangbiker1966
@theboomerangbiker1966 2 жыл бұрын
Don't worry, the 'expert advice' is incorrect, you will only have issues if you try to plug a non canbus charger into the DIN socket. SAE direct to the battery bypasses the bike's canbus...

I would like to see a vid on charging drone batteries as you mention here. Right now i run a cigarette charger from the cockpit DIN to my tank bag and plug in the drone charger there. When I do that then I can not charge my USB items. I am now looking to run a cigarette plug off the SAE plug (like you showed in this vid) and charge from the back but I need to make sure I unplug it when I cut off the engine so I don’t drain the battery

Thanks for the fool proof explanation. Out of curiosity, what else have you connected. I saw there was a second cable on the positive. Can't recall seeing this on my bike. The other question - why didn't you connect to the battery positive directly? Sorry, may seem a stupid question. I'm just not that much of a bike tech person.
@theboomerangbiker1966
@theboomerangbiker1966 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, first off, there's no such thing as a stupid question, but I can give you stupid answers :) Couple of points then... Good pick-up on the "what else have you connected?" that's powering my Hex exCAN which controls my auxiliary lights via the 'whizz wheel' on the handlebars (must get around to doing a show & tell on that). And... there's a handy positive terminal post behind the round red plastic cover that's easier to reach, rather than going on to the top on the battery. How's that for an answer, good enough? Cheers, Nick

I have the same rocky creek compressor and am wondering if there’s any harm in using the connected they provide with no fuse or if I would be better off purchasing a seperate connector with a fuse?
@theboomerangbiker1966
@theboomerangbiker1966 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I had same thought and so fitted one with a fuse. You could cut the wire and solder in a fuse if you have something spare, but to be honest it would probably cost more to buy the items rather than a full lead! Good luck Melanie!

Does this drain the battery when not in use?
@theboomerangbiker1966
@theboomerangbiker1966 2 жыл бұрын
I think you answered your own question Rod. If you leave something plugged in (in use, drawing current) whilst the bike is isn't running, then yes, it will drain the battery. For example, using a tyre compressor, always have the bike running. I'm just about to install a smart USB cable direct to the battery that automatically switches off when the amps hit a lowest threshold, ensuring there's always enough power to crank the engine amd start the bike...
