I worked with a Polish man here in North Wales on a job. His name was Mirek and we soon became friends. It was a sad day when the job ended, as we knew we would probably never see each other again. We could not speak Polish and he could not speak much English - but it did not matter as we were able to communicate well enough. We taught him some Welsh and he taught us a few Polish words. What a nice man he was. It's interesting how some people make a lasting impression on you. I always smile when I think back to those few days on that job and I really hope he does too. :-)

1. Thank you, that is so right! Last week ended the Hungarian Idol. One guy from the jury readed a statement that sayed: enough with Hungarian singing because if they sing in Hungarian, they will have no success abroad. And they brought a Hungarian renegade film producer from the US to organize this, A. Vajna. The viewers of the Idol chosed 2 singers who sung in Hungarian, but the jury cheated and in the last moment they made one girl, from half Romanian origin to win cause she sung in English.

@01DancingPrincess Seems fair, cause I think everybody in Wales should speak Welsh. Of course this is not the peoples fault that the majority cannot speak Welsh. It is because of the English policy of Anglicisation made many centuries long. England owes Wales.

If the rationale behind speaking English is because English is "the universal language". What about Mandarin, more people speak Mandarin than English. Wales is a small country like mine but is a great Nation Wú lún ní shuō shén me yū yán, Shàng dì shì nī d fù qīn, tā lī jiē nī Mandarin Whatever language you speak, God is your Father and he understands you English Pa bynnag iaith y byddwch yn siarad, Duw yw eich tad, a Della chi, Cwmraeg

that is false. Mandarin and spanish just happen to have more native speakers, while half the world's population is able to speak English with it being their second language.

@01DancingPrincess Thanks for your response. Yes, you can sing in other language, but you will never win. It is all set up from up. Believe me, I live in such a country: when I was in the school many years ago, I learned German, there were French classes too. Today, as a foreign language only is teached English. Yes, and you MUST buy in Cymraeg. Only in this way you and other Welsh people can influence Wales to regain more of its Welshness, and more people to learn and use the Welsh language.

@szalard I love the eurovision song contest and btw they don't all sing in english some do sing in their own language winners usually sing in english though. And refering to your first comment. Maybe english is essential in the UK but not nessasseraly in other countries. I am proud to have the gift of 2 languages but I would prefer to walk into a shop in WALES and speak to the workers through the WELSH LANGUAGE that is a choice and I have got every right to ask for a welsh sales assistant.

It seems that the issue of the abuse of Race Relations legislation that he refers to in the song (1:05) has now been dealt with. Below is an extract from a document entitled "Recruitment and the Welsh Language" from the Welsh Language Board (dated 2009). ===================== Since 1996 there have not been any unfavourable tribunal cases involving language and employment under the Racial Equality Legislation 1976. In the Tribunal case of Boylan V Anglesey County Council under the Race Relations Act 1976 in May 1998, it was decided that Anglesey were correct to advertise a vacancy for a community youth worker as a ‘Welsh essential’ post and were correct not to place a non-Welsh speaker on the shortlist nor appoint that individual. ‘‘We can see nothing objectionable - nothing which cannot be justified - in the Council’s practice. If Welsh is an essential requirement, then it is sensible to use that as a criterion when formulating a short-list’’ “The unanimous decision of the tribunal is that the complaint under the Race Relations Act 1976 fails’’. =====================

If I am not Welsh, but learning Welsh, does that make guilty of cultural appropriation? Only I was talking to a Welsh person in Welsh and they got all kinds of offended. And here I was thinking that they would appreciate seeing a foreigner speak their language, which isn't a language which many people bother to learn (even among the Welsh themselves). Guess I was wrong...

It's a great language and country to culturally appropriate. I don't hear the Americans complain when we all adopt their twang when singing or their jeans for everyday wear. Where did this stupid term come from? Keep learning, keep speaking and hang the minority twits who think that somehow you are not authentic unless you can trace your ancestry back to the first Welshman (or woman) whom we all know was Adda and Efa!

Personally - I believe Brythonic (Cymraeg) is Gallic. Why?! Because of all the terms that are similar to it used down the centuries. Gallic wars, for example was a book about the Roman wars with the Gallic tribes of Gaul and Britain, not Ireland. Then we have the Galatians in Turkey (get around this by saying the Celts invaded, when in fact they are from there) Gallipoli, Galilee... ...and then we get Galles or Pays de Galles in most Latin Languages. Even the term Gael in Scotland probably comes from the rarely written history of the Cymro-Britons in control of Scotland. Ask yourself this, if the Cymro-Britons really did found the major cities in what would become Scotland, why didn't the irish change the names? If the Irish founded them, why did they use old Welsh? Welsh or Cymraeg (Khwmric in ancient times) is in fact Gallic. Not Brythonic. The only Brythonic language in my opinion was Pictish. Linguistically they say that....Irish and Welsh (Gaelic and Brythonic (Cymraeg)) come from the same root language. But developed independently of each other over several centuries. I agree they come from the same root language, but I don't agree that they developed independent of each other. I think the Norse raids and control of Ireland was the major factor as to why it (Gaelic) changed.

It seems to me really counter-productive. You can’t blame every English person for all the shit that they did to your country. We are not all bad honest to God. What else are you supposed to feel deep sympathy with you? Please stop insulting the English.
