Unfortunately, in Jamaica, electricity charge has NOTHING to do with usage. If you turn on one light for a month, do not use microwave, iron, plug out every appliance etc, your bill going to look the same like your consumption last month. If you dare to plug in ONE Christmas light for 1 hour every day for 14 days , yeah mon, January electricity bill shoot up. If you query it, you are told it is normal consumption, you must pay the bill or face disconnection. Nowhere to turn. No one to talk to. NO JUSTICE. Safa is not the only one being extorted by them.

Same thing happened to my mother. She was away for four months, when she went back her billed was 80,000 more than the amount she paid before she left Jamaica. She went to the office to make a complain, in a very disrespectful attitude she was told "YOU JUST HAVE HAVE TO PAY IT". Monies have been stolen from her bank account down there, when she reported it to branch manager nothing was done about it. It was her lost. That was the straw that break the camel's back. She sold her house and returned back to the U.S. System down there is broken. There is no law down there.

, So true, I / we had similar experience after returning to the island from overseas and don’t care how one complained, they give all kind of reasons and excuses to justify their” teefing concept of their billing system “ How can a house not having anyone or anything consuming electricity while the householder is way consumed electricity attracting such frightening and astronomical bills ? And to add insult to injury, the back and forth arguments between JPS and customer, the final conclusion after such arguments always ends in favor of JPS that will only extend to the customer a few days payment plan to pay the disputed bill regardless of the issue at hand, this argument about customers must conserve is all bull sh…that is only of benefits to the JPS Co. and they know this, why? By repeated experience, the said JPS will take all the time in the world explaining to customers how much energy each electrical fan in a household will consumed, but let us say that one of four fans operating in the household malfunction ( stop working) and is not repaired or replaced , it is guaranteed by experience that you will never see a decreased in the customer electricity consumption, a matter of fact, one will most likely see an increased instead, the customer service department is just there to add to one frustration and the customer ends up feeling fed up and just pays the bill in order to avoid the threat of disconnect of service which hangs over the customer head like the “ sword of Damocles “ On one of many occasion , a customer service representative, looked right, looked left and confidently told me at the former JPS payment location at Church Street, Kingston, that, customers conserving is nonsense and no matter how the customer try to conserve, it doesn’t matter, as the bill is pegged to the movements of the US dollar, especially when the dollar move upwards, but the customer will never benefit whenever there’s a downwards movement of the dollar and that appears to be true and logical based on the aforementioned experience, another thing is, whenever there’s an overpayment by customers, the company have a “ no refund “ policy which is an injustice to the customer, as JPS earns interest on that money in their custody, whiles the customer could have been earning same if the money was refunded to the customer, another thing is, successive government has allowed/ tolerated the JPS to exploit the people of Jamaica for too long, something that would not be accepted or tolerated in the US or other developed countries and this is why JPS and other companies asserting themselves to be “ investors “ likes Jamaica with a passion, cause they can do any and anything with their customers and get away with it, as simple as that! And again, I asked, is this sufficient reason to “ vote blindly “ And not on these issues that causes us SUFFERING and AFFLICTION ? Think about it 🤔.. Mhmmm???

Estimated bill are sent base on your average monthly usage when they do not read the meter, although he did not used it they will still send an estimated bill however when they read the meter they should credit or debit the difference.

He is not lying.. I have the same issue. I have been away from my home since March 2023, and the first month after I left, the bill I got was more than the previous month before I left. I wrote to them because you can't get anybody to speak with on the phone. When I informed them that no one is at my home using any electricity, so bill is not correct, they tell me that I am to get an electrician to check my electrical wiring because that is what the meter reading is. There is no one at my home, my house is locked up. I have still not yet return to my home as I am overseas, and my bill is still fluctuating... one month a text message telling me, congratulations your usage is 10% less this month, then the next month it is saying that my usage is 10% more. JPS is just robbing Jamaicans and the OUR/the government is doing nothing about it..

I am living in New York. Yes boss, and also the Natironal Water Commission. In 2019 I was in Jamaica in November of that year. November 19th to be exact. Payed my bill and returned to Jamaica on December 15th. I got a water bill for $48,000. My bill has been running $15,000 - $20, 000 every month with no one living in the house. My NWC bill doubled in about 6 months, even when im not home, i wrote a letter to make a complaint and a representative was sent to check the meter, he went to the premesis without my presence although i told him the time i would be home, claimed to have read the meter and he didn't see any leaks... the other month my bill went down and it's back up again, so im going to keep writing them, they came last month and installed the digital meter, so I'm waiting to see what my next bill will be... these utility companies have criminal employees who are ripping off the consumers, and the government needs to act immediately.

Sad to say brogod can't stop it, anything he says or do is just propaganda. It's not just JPS, power companies and corporatives everywhere have that policy, like u said, the power companies doesn't charge based on personal consumption per address, they charge based on area averages and consumption. They also have hidden language that customers signs that say they(the customer) agree to pay for the prorated billing and the cost of bridging of electricity. I think the way to avoid the monthly prorated charge is to notify the provider of electricity of absence and they'll only charge fees. I experienced a similar issue while away training for an extended period of time with no major usage in my residence and my bill didn't reflect my absence. My provider stated that my area is billed on budget billing and it's a average of area use, weather conditions, rates and delivery of service etc. they basically say you're going to pay it. The power service companies know people will eventually pay and if you don't pay they disconnect your service and you will have to pay to reconnect which makes it a win win for them and loose loose for the customers. Sometimes these things needs to be publicized to let people see that we're all in this together.

I can relate. I was at my previous address only about 5 days in my billing cycle, JPS said it was 10 kw used, for that, my bill came to almost $6000 . The bill said ACTUAL not estimate. When investigated, I didn't even consume 10kw so it was written off.

They did that to my dead uncle. He past away and no one lived in his house yet he was being charged monthly - they even raised it! They would come out and read the meter and STILL charged him for usage! We had to write to the corporate office, the CEO/or next in charge, and they ordered the area manager to sort it out and credit my uncle's account. And their customer care is ridiculous! They kept saying they're sending someone out to investigate and keep being so sweet on the phone, yet nothing was done! Go over the local office's head to the corporate office, via email and phone calls! It worked for us! I feel badly for the layperson who wouldn't know how to get that done.😣

Yes the paying customers have to pay for the illegal lights in their community.A representative of jps told us in a meeting some years ago in my community. Just like the damages caused to light poles during a hurricane etc customers had to pay for them . It was called hurricane repairs.

@Mavrick - As a sub. to Asafa/Alyshia's channel, this is the first time I'm seeing his JPS protestation video. So, in short, JPS is socializing their losses. Isn't JPS a public/private enterprise? Long-story short - they can only get away with what WE THE RIGHTFUL JPS OWNERS will allow them to get away with. To hell with our national heroes - they screwed Usain and now they figure they can screw Asafa. Elections are coming. Asafa has a growing platform - he should use it! No one wants to get themselves involved in "dirty" politics, but the politicics will find you. Asafa has a growing platform (over100K subs and climbing 👍👏👌). Time for our 10-second King to turn up the heat on the powers that be.

Maverick, I thought people who are selling electricity back to the grid usually use apps that show their power consumption in real-time. Asafa should already have the data on his phone showing days and times of his actual power usage. The guy should also be able to tell instantly if someone is even stealing his electricity when he is not home.

@@craigstephen2729 I conserve a lot. My panels total 1000 watts. I run my washing machine on solar, most of my lights, and small stuff are all charged my solar. Fridge will be next as that the only thing thats still on JPS.
