It is such a dilemma. Sometimes you really need this horrible drug. Does a lower dose (under 5mg) even work on inflammation? Is it strong enough to even help?

Such a dilemma! Yes a lower dose can help for inflammation. Obviously it’s not as good as higher doses for really inflammatory conditions. For a condition like RA where there is a constant low-grade inflammation, this can be enough. But for other conditions where there’s a lot of inflammation, it just won’t help.

I have gone down VERY slowly from 20mg - now at 2-1/2 mg for weeks and was so afraid of going down further and off. Good to know I can stay at this forever. I have been on and off for years for RA.

People are taking way too much of this stuff.For one its at least 4-8 times stronger than hydrocortisone. So you need firstly to see how much HC you need to do well on and that means the minimum dose. Then you have to divide this at least by 4 .This must be determined by testing and not just once. I took a very small dose of HC and this has its pros and cons vs prednisone. prednisolone would be better but ive not seen it in 1mg tablets only 5mg.if you are deficient in cortisol then it will change your life for the better if you can get the dose right. For mild adrenal deficiency i doubt you would need more than 1mg a day.

can i use 5 mg predinisone for preventing asthma...? i had my first asthma attack 2 months ago and i stropped montelukast due to its high cost,,,,,i have also severe allergic nasal polyps beacause of my asthma so i am taking 40 mg of predinisone for my polyps and i am feeling a lot better for a couple of days....i think the nasal polyps is shrinking and i am breathing well

That is possible. Definitely work with your doctor to figure out the best treatment plan.

Go ahead and mention PMR once in a while. Rheumatologists act like it doesn't exist, while it is so common. Unlike RA, prednisone is about the only helpful treatment.

What’s crazy about PMR is they NEVER mentioned this disease in pharmacy school. Plus prednisone is not FDA approved for PMR, so I had never even heard of it before I became the Prednisone Pharmacist!

@PrednisonePharmacist If I wasn't married to an experienced Internist, I couldn't have gotten prednisone, unless I went blind. My family doc refuses to diagnose it, she believes in " experts". Rheumatologists refuse referrals or it takes a year here. We are all old ladies on Medicare, they would go broke.

I’m pretty new to prednisone for psoriatic arthritis. I’ve taken it here and there for flare ups but at 10 mg at first then I drop to 5 mg and then off, usually only for about 2 weeks at a time or less. My flares almost instantaneously return. I think maybe I’m not taking them long enough. Maybe I should drop to the 5 mg and go longer. I’m wondering how long i could safely take it at 5 mg and then after that would I need to taper by cutting a 5 mg in half or no taper needed? Help! :)

Yes that sounds like you may need to prolong the taper. Everyone is different in how quickly they can get off so maybe you could get by with that strategy? Definitely work with your doctor.
