It uses overlapping tiny plates to allow flexibility. He shot high, right on the edge. Any armor that covers above the collarbone would not be very menouvreable. If you get shot in the neck, tough break. But armor atleast gives you a chance vs nothing

Im an emt, and just for all of you that are curious, multiple broken ribs leads to what's called "flail chest". "Flail chest is a condition defined as two or more contiguous rib fractures with two or more breaks per rib and has mortality estimates conservatively ranging from 9 to 20% [2, 3]. Such high mortality rates are attributed to a higher incidence of concomitant injuries and respiratory difficulties [2]." As for the cuts and the like keep in mind your test medium has no skin or clothes on. Ballistic gel simulates muscle and other soft tissue. Your finger can penetrate it.

Lessons learned: Armor only works is you get shot where it covers. At a certain point, armor and ppe become more of a hindrance than a benefit. Ballistic dummies are expensive.

Id be curious to see if they've ever made a carbon fiber body armor? If it would make like a hybrid hard/soft armor thatd be more effective than Kevlar yet lighter than a plate

I didn't realize there were shotgun slugs that were that powerful. Where I live in MN deer hunting is slug only, so my dad and I hunt in northern MN where we can use rifles, and my dad has told me my whole life that slugs just aren't the way to go... obviously that one is though, lol.

Methods No. The plate should be worn higher. You should be able to look down without choking yourself, but still high enough to avoid being shot like this dummy was. I’m kinda bummed to see this vest sits low like that. Case in point with that first shot. 😳

Go back to old-time armor. Heavy leather over padded fabric. Doesn’t work on firearms or spike, and not total stab protection but may make a difference for many knife strikes.

@@blackhawkinternationalsecu6962 NIJ certification required drop tests, water and extreme temperature tests, and random audits by the NIJ at the factory for quality control which has caught many slacking manufacturers in the past. Safelife doesn't have to do any of that and only have 3 year old independent batch tests to show.

That's a good video idea. Some say birdshot is lethal for HD, some say it's not. Real question is, what range is it lethal, and what size shot? That dummy would be a fairly accurate test medium. Also, test a wax slug and buckshot.

Great slug. Took a mule deer at 47yards with one. Punched straight through on a broadside shot and he piled up at 30yards. If you take those slugs out to a range day be sure to warn people about the recoil. Shoot the slugs while standing or prone only, not seated at a bench.
