I must be close to the coarsest facial hair/sensitive skin combination known to man; I have invested so much money into different types of razors and skin products that its nearing my student loan statement. For the longest time, I have used a Merkur safety razor with pre-shave oil and cream, but still end up with burns, irritation, and the 5-o'clock shadow look instantly. Never have I seen someone use a razor, and go against the grain with such ease. I may have to look into this philips norelco razor

Shaving is a every day process and many different tools/setups can (should) coexist. I electric shave before I go to work. I also buzz my head bald every day for 30+ years. I shave with my Merkur razor on date / party / etc nights. Feels and smells fantastic. I shave my head (razor blade) once or twice a week only (to avoid ingrown hairs). I tried several razor blades to find the best one for me. I tried several electric shavers. its a process and its a very sane, self-caring, positive process. Its well spent time and money that encourages you to take care of yourself, eat well, look and feel healthy, etc. Im glad you found your best everyday electric shaver that works the best for you.

After having a huge debate with myself, decided to give OneBlade a try. I just tried it and honestly It was the best shave EVER after trying numerous trimmers and shavers. I need to emphasize that using one blade with the foam is a must in my opinion(makes the process much FASTER and SMOOTHER), otherwise, I couldn’t find it useful for dry shaving. But that’s my personal preference and might be different for someone else. As far as closeness of the shave, it’s pretty similar to electric razors that I used before and I think it’s because I used it with foam. I just hope this piece lasts and the blades don’t get dull after just a couple of uses. Hope this is helpful, Good Luck!

I just purchased the One Blade based off of your recommendation. Just used it and have to say, so far I’m impressed. My neck is extremely sensitive and I constantly breakout when I use a traditional razor or an electric. I haven’t broken out yet but tomorrow is supposed to be a hot day and with the sweat and irritation that will truly be the test. Also the One Blade with the combs works fantastic for trimming my goatee. Thanks for the excellent videos on this. I just wish they had made these back when I was in the Marines and had to shave every day. Maybe I would have been able to save myself a lot of pain. Keep up the great vids.

I’ve been using a safety razor for about 10 year now. Mostly because I break out with anything else. It’s brilliant and I love it. However, I have a OB now because I sometimes want to shave without the fuss and when I’m travelling it’s just so much easier than lugging around everything required for the safety razor. OB is wonderful for when you do not want to enjoy the safety razor and just need to get the shave done.

Going on 4 months for me, now, with the One Blade! I shave 3 times a week! I haven’ t notice any degrading of sharpness of the One Blade, yet! Still getting good beard trims and clean up shaves. Works good on my neck, but I have neck hairs that grow in a thick, cross-hatched pattern. So, I have to use the One Blade up and down and across my neck to get all of my neck hair down! As a result, I end up with a little bit of redness on my neck in random spots. On my neck, I sometimes do a 2nd, quick cleanup shave with my Gillette Mach 3 Power razor to get a little closer shave on my neck and to better get closer around all the outer edges of my beard. Then, I use cold to cool water to rinse my face off after shaving. Then, lighly dry my face. Then, I use a face moisturizer after shaving. So, the redness on my neck, usually disappears. Really like my One Blade and it NEVER cuts me!

Some of these comments... you can't post anything on KZbin without catching some flak. Great video by the way! I'm the same when it comes to typical electric, my neck is extremely prone to irritation. I've never used the One Blade but it may be something I'll have to try when time is limited (in a rush for work, etc...). I don't think I could be swayed from my beloved safety razor, but this One Blade could be a nice addition to anyone's arsenal from the looks of it. Thank you for your input!

I would advise you ditch the shaving bowl and lather directly onto the face. Your current method is not leading to the right lather consistency. Also use more water as the lather starts to dry on your face. In addition a two or three pass shave with a DE will beat the OneBlade any day of the week.

Your neck hairs might grow up, but everyone is different. If you grow your beard out a few days you'll be able to see the direction of growth. My neck happens to grow in multiple directions which is a pain. I have to follow the patterns carefully. The oneblade chewed me up something fierce. Dots of blood all over. DE is the best in my case. Plus I'm able to whip up a thick lather in about 20 seconds with my proraso cream. For anyone with sensitive skin, using rosehip seed oil as an aftershave has made a huge difference for my eczema and overall complexion. My skin doesn't get red an angry after shaving anymore.

Thanks for posting. Everybody has their own favorite process. Here's mine. I use Dove Beauty bar bath soap in my shaving mug (makes beautiful lather). I wet my beard with very warm water for about 15 - 20 seconds. While this is happening my brush is in the sink of warm water and the shaving mug is full of warm water also. Pour out the shaving mug and sufficiently wring out the brush (leave it too wet and you'll have soapy suds running down your chest). Soap up my brush with about a dozen swirling strokes in the soap mug. Then I make the lather on my face. This is accomplished with quick swirling motions until I have a thick creamy lather covering my beard. The longer you swirl the thicker it gets. From there use the razor of your chose. I use a Bic disposable single blade razor. They are dirt cheap and last for about a week worth of shaves. With the inexpensive price they could be tossed after each shave if desired.

Tony, I have to say they will be prying the OneBlade from my cold dead hands lol. I was very impressed with your first run with the DE safety razor, much better than when I first started. I do use both, generally at different times and for different reasons. Both give me an irritation free shave compared to cartridge or traditional electric razors. Another big seller of the DE is cheapness which is true but many people get sucked into artisan soaps/creams or different razors. That's when the cost increases. The lathering is an art on its own and varies between soaps and creams. It took me a while to get it right and I still make mistakes when trying new soaps. Shave Nation and Mantic59 do some great tutorials.

Safety razors are the best tool for the job. It will take longer 2 or 3 passes but you are rewarded with a superior shave. The razor blades themselves cost pennies. With that said it is not a cost saver for most. I have been wet shaving for around 9 months and have bought a ton of soaps, aftershaves, and balms, it gets addicting.

I just bought the Face and Body version. It is really nice of how it trims painlessly. The edger however, doesn't edge. There could be a different angle to hold it. Also no pouch included. So Philipps being really cheap here. Really hard to open the package. I needed James Bond to decipher it. I opted for the body and face model because it has slightly better battery run time, charge time, and the other part that I need for sensitive areas. Overall good engineering.

Just a couple of points to consider: 1) get bigger lathering bowl for this brush (e.g. check Captain's Choice) - gonna save time 2) ''painting'' lather on the face is the second step after working lather into the beard in circular motion. 3) Looking at your facial hair I'd say you need something more powerful (read bigger GAP) than this butterfly razor. Check Muhle 89, Merkur, EG... I've switched to DE razors in 2011 and not looking back to anything else. Cost wise...I bought 100 Derby blades and used around 40 of them over 6 years. Now use Feather - works better with R89 IMHO. My first pass goes against the grain - don't have problems with that.

TIME IS MONEY, and the OneBlade saves alot of time! I agree on the quality of the save from a safety or the old timer folding and would use them for a special night like wedding or something but the oneblade is way more practical and easy to use. I also get irritated by the blades, always been an issue. But I have a healthy respect for what your saying, its true if you have the time, patience, and skill...

Michael Lazarus, a nice cliche for the industrial age. I already said it takes me very little time. I started paying attention to the time this week...2-3 minutes is my shave routine. I bought blades in September 2014, and there are 2 left in the box. They cost me $12. How much will you spend in blades in the next 3.5 years?
@TheRickJames

Nice review, I actually got mine today at the recommendation of a co worker who swears by it. I usually use the disposable mach 5 or BIC 5 recently but I decided to grow my beard out so i need something to make it look neat and professional and its nearly impossible to do that with blades, especially in the morning while your still waking up and rushing etc, i have nicked myself or cut a bump head on my neck like 100s of times. I am very happy with the oneblade, I trimmed my beard today, edged up, shaved my neck and then proceeded to cut my hair with it using the bigger guard included to put it threw its passes and it did really good! I literally cut everything with it without it going dead or dull! Im gonna save loads of time and money with this!

I just want to mention a positive of DE safety razors that no one seems to bring up. The process. While it is considered one of the biggest negatives it's also one of it's biggest positives. Using pre-shave oil/cream, the lather, the balm, and the aftershave. The pre-shave helps moisturize your skin and soften your beard hair (trust me, any guy out there with a lady will thank you if you do this and helps your blades last longer), lather again helps moisturize and protect your skin, balm is to prevent any irritation that might have been caused and helps keep in-grown hairs from forming, and it's hard to beat some of those after shave scents. I've been using a safety razor for 2 years now and I'll probably never switch back to an electric just because I do enjoy the process of shaving with a DE. I'm considering getting a One Blade now as a back-up or travel razor but that'd be it.

I use a DE razor every day. Nice collection of Edwin Jagger, Merkur, Parker, ya da ya da ya da. Sometimes I use a cuthroat razor if I have the time. I've been doing this a long time, and know what I am doing. That being said, Gillette Mach 3 offers probably the smoothest shave you can get, quickly and easily - the multiple blade option that Mach 3 offers is a good mix between clean, comfortable shave and not clogging up too quickly (as opposed to those that have 5, 7, or 40 blades in the cartridge) -- and their claim to fame is that they first lift the hair up and the razors behind it then come in a cut the hair, such that it is below skin level. While the shave is great, my skin becomes irritated, and I guaranteed a few in-grown hairs. Electric razors are even worse -- guaranteed irritation and ingrown hairs. Double Edge and Straight razors take care of all that - nice close shave and no irritation, and that is why I use them. With all that being said (lots of hot air...), I am kinda intrigued by this Phillips-Norelco one blade shaver -- definitely will try it out, and really appreciate you putting this out there for us.

okay they are totally different, you cant compare a traditional razor to the one blade. the one blade wont give you a baby face, it will feel like the day after a clean shave, but its fast, it can cut off a thick beard. but what i do is use the one blade, then a normal blade to get baby face, usually at an interview then i just keep it short or clean depending on the job, or what the wife wants

Shaving with a safety razor has a bit of a learning curve.....the type of razor you use.......If you have sensitive skin use a mild razor....the beval or feather AS-D2 both are nice and unlikely to nick you. Razor blade is the next pick.....each brand is a bit different some are sharper than others and you have to find the one that matches you........Voskhod is what I started with its middle of the road. Your lather was very watery.......should look like whip cream....or you can use can shaving cream. Yes, I am a bit bias :) electric razor give me a five o'clock shadow at noon....used them for a few years before getting back into wet shaving......use to be in the Navy and its not easy to wet shave on a ship at sea in such small spaces. But recently got back into it.....even do videos......not the best yet but I just starting

You're Absolutely RIGHT. That 'Norelco Oneblade' is a GAME CHANGER for those of us who Hate to shave. There are better things to do than mix your shaving cream from scratch, for crying out loud. No No No lol ..... and that coming from somebody who Hates electric razors. The Oneblade is in a class by itself. The battery charge lasts longer than advertised, just hope the blades (or whatever they are) lasts as advertised?. .... And works Better than a commercial grade trimmer to knock down heavy growth beard. .. if you want a super close shave, after using the Oneblade (I'm a one shave a week guy), after using the Oneblade dry, then shave with razor of your choice, Just One Pass Against The Grain Without Shaving Cream (the Oneblade gets close enough so shaving cream just gets in the way). Super Quick and Fast, and best of all, not at all Pretentious. lol

theMediaMart - I shave once a week, so I used to use a professional, commercial-grade, heavy-duty plug-in powerful Wahl hair trimmer to knock down the heavy beard growth, if worked in both directions it got as close to the skin better than anything possible (but takes some time). But it Still left considerable stubble. So then would have to shave with a razor with the grain, with shaving cream, THEN, to make it close and smooth, shave again without shaving cream against the grain. With the Oneblade, the trimming (bushwacking) time is cut in half AND it is 'trimmed' Closer than the best commercial trimmer made, so close and smooth in fact that it eliminates the need to shave again with nasty annoying shaving cream, just a quick swipe with the razor against the grain on a water wet face and my face is squeaky smooth in 1/2 the time it used to take. LIFE CHANGING

Hair growth under the chin is different from man to man. It can in fact grow in different directions, so your statement is wrong, and only applicable to some. Also, the Philips make a mess when using it dry, and well you can remove that problem by doing it wet. But then it is better to stick to razors. Well my Philips has sentimental value, and is very easy and with no nicks and such, but I like razors in another way, by looking at the whole process and charm to it. And you want to use the Philips dry, it's easier. I have both the Philips One Blade Pro and razors. See no problem in having both. And also, no electricity is needed for the razors, all the sound from Philips is unnessesary.

I recently traded up to the one blade from the same exact van der hagen. While the van der hagen is phemomenal and gives a very close shave, i have extremely sensitive skin and a dramatic jaw line. Ive had several norelco products and have used a myriad of blades and company. The norelco one blade HAS a very close and easy shave with easily the most skin friendly edge. While the safety razor is cheaper with blades, you end up saving money on lather and convenience due to only having to purchase a set of 2 every 8 months. Summarily id recommend to those with sensitive skin, regardless a safety razor will always be superior as far as closeness to skin

I have sensitive dry skin and a safety razor with a closed comb has been great for my skin. A recommendation I plan to try is using a slant head/comb on my next actual razor purchase as it more slices the hair than attempts to chop it. Supposedly it is better for those with sensitive skin, but I have not had a problem so long as I use products like a pre shave cream and a shave soap designed for sensitive skin and follow the rule of not applying pressure and instead letting the weight of the razor do the work for you and only moving the blade to contour a bit better.

Ultimately depends on skin type here too. Going with the grain only can be good for those with more sensitive skin or parts of their skin that are dry as it get it to a closeness that still feels nice, but doesn't bother as much on the razor front. I can't use electric because it irritates and cartridge ones cause irritation and lots of other stuff.
