I have been reading two different Norwegian translations. One of them definitely doing what you describe here, smoothing out the edges to make the story more accessible to a modern day reader. The other trying to stay as close as possible to the original. I enjoy them both, but reading the more archaic version is getting my heart pumping that little bit harder.

I think if you were grilled in the training ground of The Silmarillion, this sort of thing is cake! I enjoyed this first half a lot, but I'm pumped to see how the drama plays out in the second half.
