I have never been more correct with anything my life except believing that Oorochimaru was the greatest villian. He failed to get what he wanted still terrified all Konoha till the day Naruto became a Hokage. I still have nightmares of him having some hidden agenda behind him staying in the Village 😳 . For some reason I saw through what Madara wanted, Oobito wanted but they never terrified me as much as The legendary Sannin of the Leaf. He remains my favourite character of the series forever. Somewhere next equivalent is Itachi (Him going through that pain for doing the right thing)

It's not a human feeling, it's a life feeling, in general. The way you put it is too anthropocentric. Yeah, you can admit you're superior while subsequently still fearing death even as something beyond human. Like how the Otsutsuki do in a way when they are confronted with death. Here's the actual point: If you become too 'higher than life' then you might forget that you are not far removed from the ones beneath you, even if you are way more superior than them.

Otsutsukis do not die like Humans, they enter a place in-between, as that is apart of their cycle of rebirth. There is no such thing with Humans whatsoever, there is no comparison.

Totally. Naruto was so dark and scary in the beginning but became more and more lighthearted. Nagato kills dozens of Konoha shinobi just to revive them? That was such a bullshit move. And the tailed beasts are horrible creatures, insanely dangerous, right? Nah, they turn out to be cute pets that just felt a bit lonely. That's why they were evil. And OMG, there's a SHINOBI WORLD WAR, so many people will die! Wait, what? Only Neji? To this day, I do not know what got into Kishimoto to ruin this masterpiece. Naruto clearly had the potential to become the best shojo manga ever - tragic, dark, profound, suspenseful ... Breaks my heart how it went to garbage.

@@mariusa.5863 Yeah, I agree with you, the darkness of part 1 truly was what made Naruto great back in the days, I personally prefer OG naruto over shippuden, while I think shippuden isn't as bad as many people make it out to be it had a lot more potential, OG Naruto was cool becaus of the fights where poeple used Taijutsu, hand seals and "normal" jutsus that weren't god tear, that kind of changed in Shippuden as time went on

The only impactful "good" characters that died were Hiruzen, Asuma, Jiraya and Neji. 4 out of 500+ episodes in a show that about gruesome shinobi reality and dying. It's bullshit. The biggest bullshit is in the Pain arc, like you said. It would've been infinitely better to write it that Nagato had little chakra left and he could only revive a small amount of shinobi, Including Kakashi( because he is relevant to the plot and has good arca later) and that's it. Make death matter, make the stakes higher and not Naruto giving bullshit chakra cloaks so they don't die

It's rare to see perfect writing within character development. Naruto, in my opinion, achieved the creation of 3 perfect characters. In no particular order in regards to favoritism, I believe the series wrote Orochimaru, Kakashi, and Itachi perfectly. All 3 characters have SO much depth that it almost doesn't even feel real. Those 3 have more depth than most other characters in any other series I can think of...both in anime and out of it

In the Boruto series, Orochimaru has perfected regeneration. He can instantly regenerate any severed part of the body including his head. He is still that mysterious, mad scientist, just a lot less creepy. He is one of Kishimoto's masterpiece characters!

@@sercravenmohead3631 Antihero how? At present, he is an ally to Konoha. He has a good understanding with Naruto and is supportive of Naruto being the Hokage. He has perfected cloning and body-part regeneration. Since he is able to create clones of Mitsuki, he doesn't need to experiment on humans anymore. Eventho he is on the good side, he is still very much that mad and mysterious scientist, still feared by the world. The writers haven't changed that part of his character.

Oddly Jiraiya was the only one who didn't fear death or aging so he spent his life actually living and enjoying it fully while Orochimaru and to a lesser extent Tsunade spent a good portion of their lives trying to regain or keep youth

Proof that death was the one thing that Orochimaru feared. When Hiruzen pulled out the Reaper Death Seal Orochimaru was terrified the second he saw the Reaper. This is the same Orochimaru that in a much weaker state laughed at a rampaging 4 Tailed Cloak Naruto. The fact that we as humans cannot learn everything there is to know is an interesting motive for villains. They either end up going insane due to the contradiction or their main goals ends up being to achieve immortality. In Orochimaru’s case it was both.

My favorite villain. Not only was he creepy, but he pushed the plot. Without him, there would be no curse mark, no Sasuke retrieval ark. Without that ark many of the characters wouldn't have grown, and may not have actually become as strong as they needed to be for Madara, or anything else they would face. Honestly, Orochimaru's motivation of wanting to learn more about the world is one I relate a lot with. Becoming a body hopping snake creature doesn't sound too bad if you think about it like that. Not that I'd steal living bodies to inhabit. Preferably I'd probably work on creating an artificial one that doesn't age or at least keep making more as I burn through them.

Hey Sage, it’s me again. I loved that you are one of the few people who made a video essay about Orochimaru as a character and villain. I secretly wished for someone to do this. I loved how terrifying he was in the chuunin exams, and his fight with Sasuke and Orochimaru. Sasuke may have put up a good fight with Orochimaru, but he still got what he wanted by manipulating Sasuke and appealing to his feelings of powerlessness and revenge. He played his cards right to convince Sasuke to leave the Hidden Leaf village.

Orochimaru was great villain that shows you can have good writing and a compelling evil character , and them they brought him back only to turn him into this gray/good character that is little more then a massive plot device. Sometimes as a writer you need to know when to let a character die , its better give them a good send off , than to continuo writing them just for sake of popularity and fan service , only to see this once great characters become a shell of themselves and fall into oblivion.

Orochimaru is easily the best villain of the series besides Pain. Those two were legitimately the most terrifying villains of the series while at the same time having understandable philosophies. All the other villains in Naruto have one but not the other. Not even Madara whom many hail as the best villain of the series. Madara never killed a major character which is a huge hit to his scare factor especially considering how overpowered he was. It honestly felt like he was OP for no reason. Had he killed the 5 Kage it would have made him feel like a legit threat but nope. Madara was more powerful than Oro and Pain yet he didn't kill even one major character. Like bruh what?

I don't think Orochimaru was ever truely evil but was willing to do anything in order to preserve his life, and those he loved. We never know his true intentions why he wanted to destroy the leaf other than blaming the leaf for his parents death. So Orochimaru betrayed everyone in the Leaf village and sought out immortality all just to see his parents again. It is not black-and-white with him; he actually does have a good reason to be evil. He shouldn't, morally speaking, but it is still understandable why he is the way he is.

The will to wait for an eternity is why Orochimaru and Sasori are not compatible partners in the Akatsuki. Sasori hates waiting since he waited for his parents to come back to the Sand, only to find out the White Fang killed them. The Red Scorpion still had a glimmer of humanity, even if he tried to cast it off. Orochimaru is so cunning, cruel, inhumane and fixed on his own agenda that he is willing to wait forever for it.

Oro is very similar to Sasuke in that he relentlessly pursues his goals and isn't well-liked by others. But, I do relate to him. The fear of mortality especially as I age is haunting. It's something I can't think too hard about lest I lose myself. I can most definitely relate to just wanting to live in this world forever. I never want to fade to nothing.

From war orphan, to legendary sanin, to twisted and demented body snatcher, to now a parent with two sons Orochimaru hence the oro in their name is like the very snake they use in their summonings. From so many identities and many abilities but in their og form the death of their parents all the loses they witnessed from Tsunade’s lover and brother to their comrades in war all caused Orochimaru to pursue the secrets of life and death in order to make sure no one would experience the pain of loss and not even themselves could die. But along the way they became distorted and destroyed the original path and became determined to pursue immortality and shed so much skin that they lost themselves in that path. But Orochimaru put themselves in a cycle of good intentions, evil monster and lastly to calm serpent: they who wait in silence to strike and plan for the next hunt

I've got in a debate just recently. In his opinion Orochimaru isn't a villian but a "free spirit, anti-hero or a mad scientist" of some sort. But for me, Orochimaru still be one of the best villain even tho he do good deeds in Buroto.

I think you missed one more very key part of who Orochimaru was. A teacher's Pet. He valued the 3rd's opinion to the extreme, wanted to show him that 'What I'm doing has merit!' all along the way. He was in his own twisted way seeking validation from the man who'd become his father figure. Every step of what he'd made was an equal attempt at removing himself from Intimacy with others who might die... and Prove that he could forge a world where that intimacy might not be wasted. Sarutobi was the one person he felt he needed to prove it to. The person who both set him on his path, and who ultimately told him 'This path is wrong'. And while it's just conjecture on my part, I STRONGLY suspect that Orochimaru's motives in going after the Third were multifold, incorporating his desire to remove a 'stopgap' who is stopping things from moving forward, showing off to his teacher "This is what I have become, this is what I can do, and this is why I Was RIGHT!"... and finally... as much as an unconscious act of altruism as he might ever possibly have... to kill the man who meant so much to him... and resurrect him. The very act of his summoning the two dead hokage as weapons belies the truth of that final intent. To have his 'Father' and keep him by his Side. ... and he failed. Sarutobi utterly screws that plan into the dust via a sacrificial play that Orochimaru never even considered would be made. The sacrifice of ones place in the Karmic Wheel. I think that, as much as having been beaten by Sasuke later were the impetus for him to have chilled and mellowed out. But yes... Orochimaru, scary monster of the early series... Teacher's Pet in the extreme.

A personal headcannon of mine is that Orochimaru originally wanted immortality not for himself but for those he cares about Tsunade and Jiraya. But when Tsunade ran away and Jiraya went to be a sage Hiruzen gave Orochimaru to Danzou which twisted and warped him. The tale that Orochimaru wanting to be the 4th hokage and when he didn’t get it he went mad and started his experiments is a falsehood. In my headcannon his experiments were sanctioned under Danzou and that he was pushing for Orochimaru to be the 4th so that he can have a puppet hokage. When that didn’t happen Danzou covered up his involvement with Orochimaru and exposed the experiments as only Orochimaru’s doing not the state. Even though everything Orochimaru did was for Root and the village, Konoha needs to keep up it’s proper “nice” village image up and had to eliminate such darkness that would break the illusion. Thus making him flee and marking him as a missing ninja. It adds onto my belief that a majority of S class missing ninja are just Geniuses who were cast out of their homes for being the powerhouses they were told to be.

@OGBfit it gave me chills when I first heard Steve Blum speak as Orochimaru. Some truly great actors have failed to do that with the benefit of body language and their own actual face to emote with. Blum did with just his voice in that role. It sounded exactly like what I felt an evil serpent capable of speech would sound like.

I understand what you mean. I remember being 10 years old watching Naruto for the first time, and after the Land of Waves arc I honestly wasn't sure that anything could top it. (Again, I wasn't even 11. I'm aware I was dumb) That said, when we get to part 2 of the Chunin Exams and we meet Orochimaru for the first time, I'm chilled in the best way!! The fight was engaging, the threat all too real and then him not even fully revealing himself while simultaneously leaving Sasuke and Sakura alive and essentially marking them as prey for a later hunt was absolutely haunting. And in that moment you see everything that this character is and will be. And praying to whatever god will listen hoping that he STAYS!!!!! His dynamic creates thesis and antithesis, his goals strive others to both follow him as well as oppose him. And manner of speaking and persuasive tone could both deliver great wisdom and praise as well as scathing remarks and acidic damnation. He is in every sense the creepiest motherfucker to ever exist in anime. In my opinion, he is what Gin Ichimaru was supposed to be derived from and actually be; he just never got there. Thing is that everyone loved Gin right out the gate!! He was too mysterious and smiley for short of a better word to be as creepy as Kubo wanted him to be. Because Orochimaru was apparently thought up by Kishimoto's editorial team. Thank them for Orochimaru's existence!! Without them we wouldn't have him!!✨
