Aouita was unbeaten in 1986, but didn't set any records... Ranked No. 1 over 5000 AND 10000m, he had 5 near misses in WR attempts and that was one of these

Apuita would have been gutted at having missed this. He should have easily done it off that four lap setup but he just could raise his game on that last lap. It's amazing that El Guerrouj's record is just over 7 seconds quicker than this performance!

Trois Marocains que j'aime de toute ma vie Said Aouita Naoual el moutawakkil Hicham EGuerrouj et aussi les managers Daouda qui ont vraiment souffert pour hausser le drapeau Marocain très haut je souhaite de tout mon coeur de voir mon drapeau fleuri dans le ciel du monde ou-es tu hicham où est tu Said où est tu Naoual faites un geste pour réanimer le sport perdu et aussi encourager les jeunes à pratiqué le sport et éviter de voler des Marocains leurs téléphones et agresser les femmes en plein public nous sommes peuple Marocain devenu une mascarade aux yeux du Monde entier la police de notre royaume doit prendre des décisions ferme pour arrêter et aussi orienter cette communauté à être responsable de ses actes et nous donner des champions de la sorte

I remember Cram and Aouita saying after the 85 Nice WR that they would race against each other regularly - 'unlike Coe and Ovett'. I don't think they ever did race again...

They did race again - Aouita beat Cram in an 800m Quarter-Final in Seoul 1988 and Cram fell in a 1500m against Aouita at Crystal Palace in 1986/1987?

Oh yeah, I wasn't sure whether they ran in the same semi in Seoul, and I think I watched the Crystal Palace race recently (maybe you uploaded it?). But it's still a shame they never both raced again with both at their peak (or without falls). I presume it was Aouita who elected to race in the 2000m on this night instead of taking on Cram in the 1500m. And according to Coe it was Aouita who chose not to race him in the 1500m post LA (I think Zurich) in which Coe might have broken the WR with better pacing.
