Hey Kevin, I am actually a dedicated 8 string (chorus/ octave) bass player and though I am no luthier, I might be able to provide some insight into your saddle problem. I currently have 2 8 string basses and am in the design phase of a 3rd . One utilizes an off tune-o-matic 2-piece system, one a more conventional saddle-in-bridge block (like that of a Fender) and the Hagstrom I have ias a more complex all-in-one system that apes some design elements from Floyd Rose . There are generally 2 ways to attain tuning stability: having independent saddles, or shortening the string length. In the first case (the more common case) each string has its own saddle, with the guitar saddle being more shallow and therefore more elevated. From what I can tell this makes the string more taught and therefore closes the distance between the bass and guitar course strings. With the latter option, the bass and guitar both share the same saddle, but the strings are run through the body at varying lengths in order to augment the pressure placed on the string. Hagstroms adopt this method. The guitar strings are situated higher up the body (i.e. close to the neck) than the bass by a noticeable distance. I can only assume this change in angle and tension helps to alleviate the intonation problem associated with saddle-sharing. Granted, this is far from a perfect option and there are famed instruments that suffer from intonation issues. Oktober Guitars released a signature 12 string bass which was known to feature a pretty noticeable intonation issue. In your case, I would suggest something like the Hagstrom method. If you run the guitar strings through the body itself you may be able to overcome the intonation issue. This might also take tension off the bridge itself. Personally though, I prefer the independent saddle method more for both stability and intonation reasons.
@messihr
@messihr 4 жыл бұрын
Also, I would like to present a cheat for you that would enable the same sonic character (or nearly so) without the fret over intonation issues, piccolo strings. Certain manufacturers offer bass piccolo strings which are sonically very close to traditional guitar strings. You could string the instrument with them in lieu of guitar strings and achieve a similar tone. Given that you tend towards a djentier tone, which is notorious for compacting the frequency into something more percussive and augmented, it is likely the case that the difference would be near unidentifiable.

@@SaidTooMuchProductions So I am sitting here with my Schecter Stiletto Studio 8 that I moded with Lace alumatones and an audere preamp. I re-watched your video and reexamines the bridge on this and notice a potential problem with your build. On each of the octave strings (the guitar ones) the independent saddles on my bridge are about an 1/8 inch closer to the neck than the bass saddles, whereas your saddles are the same distance. You could try and modify your bridge to have longer saddle units to account for the difference.

@@SaidTooMuchProductions Yeah I love this instrument cause you can use it for song covers with a pretty epic sound like for example the song I'd like you to play on this 6 String 3 Course Bass/Guitar Hybrid next Monday is Shake it Off by Taylor Swift arranged by Roger Emerson. The system of having the Octave Strings strung through the Body & the regular Bass strings strung through the bridge on this 6 String 3 Course Bass kinda reminds me of how my 12 String Stratocaster is strung. The regular Strings are strung through the Body & the Octave strings are strung through the Bridge.

Tom Peterson from Cheap Trick was a big player of eight strings back in the seventies and had the first twelve string bass built in 79, four course of strings with one bass and two unison octaves. The intro to Jeremy by Pearl Jam is a twelve string bass. This six string bass isn't new, just an eight string missing one course of strings.

I am pretty sure the intonation is highly dependent on the string ratios. I looked up 8 string sets and found the two lower strings are exactly half of each other but the two high strings aren't. This is the set I referenced. "D'Addario EXL170-8 8-String Nickel Wound Bass Guitar Strings." I played an 8 string schecter bass before and had no issues with it. I was demoing it for a someone at a shop so I didn't get to buy it.
