The idea of making the pick-guards modular is, though somewhat unintentional, super creative and potentially innovative for future designs. The separation line between the two really reminds me of the Fishman Fluence pickups. Perhaps you could get stylish with it? Also really clever to reuse the tremolo cavity to house the 9v. And as someone with minuscule wiring knowledge, how you managed to pull off that wiring scheme wizardry is beyond me, even if it wasn't what you originally had in mind. As for soloing the nylon strings only, I don't know of any system that only picks up non-ferro magnetic vibrations, so the best I've got is to try phasing the bass strings out by polarizing the magnetic and piezo outputs. This won't be perfect, of course because the vibrations each transducer picks up won't be exactly the same, but it may help to lower their volume in the final output. Also, about reducing unwanted piezo noises, my beset guess would be to make everything the piezo is in contact with or indirect contact with, foam or another vibration-damping material. How to accomplish this while making sure the saddles are still firmly secured to the body, I'd have to think about
@SaidTooMuchProductions4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that, but at least I would solo something interesting, at least a new tone
@DisturbedVette4 жыл бұрын
I really wish I had thought of that battery idea myself. I’m gonna put some EMGs in my squire strat, and I ordered a custom pickguard from Warmoth to fit them and only left a route for a tone 2 knob to put my volume knob and put the battery where the vol and first tone knob would normally go, and do without tone knobs completely. I have concerns that this might cause interference issues, but I might not have to worry if I put the battery in the trem cavity.

Maybe piezo under the bridge, on a piece of hardwood, on top of a piece of cork, all routed flush under the bridge. The bridge would be "floating" on the cork, maybe reduce transferrence of sound from body to pickup. It would probably kill all sustain though

Hint: To achieve an even signal between piezo and magnetic pickups the Schatten Design PreAmps may be a good solution... there is even a two channel version, espacially for that. If you want to be all magnetic PUs there is also a very hard way to do that: build your own pickups with separate pole pieces :D - but still, you will get cross-talk...

This reminds me of some of the stuff Chris Squire used to do e.g. his triple neck Wal had a guitar neck set up like that. He later got a “normal” 8-string bass but would tune the strings oddly e.g. the “octave” strings in fifths instead (“Changes”).

one way you could MAYBE isolate the nylon strings only... would be to start with the piezo, then to take the signal from one of the pickups and play it "in reverse" back to it... this is how noise cancelling headphones work... and this could isolate those nylon strings only, but I imagine that would be pretty complicated, and how well it would work remains to be seen

I suppose this could be a "coursed hybrid short-scale bass." An 8 string (4 bass strings) or 12 string (guitar strings, but baritone scale length) resonator guitar in this style (except with all steel strings) could perhaps be the grungiest thing possible on this side of purgatory.

Open strings sound aggressive. Add a zero fret? Side note. I would like to hear this as a fretless hybrid. Or a hybrid fretless hybrid. (Remove all frets except the first 7? Or 8?)
@dylaneverhartmusic4 жыл бұрын
Yes a fretless/fretted hybrid would be amazing
@Weedbringer6664 жыл бұрын
Or even cutting litterally all the frets in third ? So you can have one fretless string and leave the two others fretted. I wanted to do that on a 7 strings guitar, in order to have 6 fretted regular strings and one big fretless string at the bottom. Maybe when I have some time (and money !) I'll be able to do so.
@BeardManny4 жыл бұрын
A zero fret would remove the issue of having to cut the nut perfectly to accommodate all strings. This would allow a much more pure tone on open strings. One downside i have seen Is that when you bend a string close to where the nut would be, that the string sometimes leaves the fretboard altogether, and dips and locks under the neck. A simple solution is to have a block on the top and bottom of the zero fret.
@jeremiahcowling38374 жыл бұрын
I have the old version of the Ibanez Ashula bass, which is a 6 string with the high two as fretless. I changed the original tuning (eadgdg, with the fretless just repeating the same d and g) to a standard beadgc and it’s really fun to use.

@UCQoElgBw4Rb5zI37trQvGZQ I thought, why not add a Zero Fret to this Ultimate Hybrid? 12 String Guitars & Mandolins (and lots of other coursed instruments such as the 8 String Bass, etc) really benefit from (and are known for having) a Zero Fret because with that many Strings, the Zero fret lowers the action to make it feel like a Solid Body Electric version of that instrument.
