The picking technique of guys like Josh Travis and Dino Cazares is very precise, so they could use lower tension. The legacy from the time when you couldn't buy so various chose of string sets

@@kaedeschulz5422 not everybody are string junkies. Plus older bass strings were something else- I used dadario bass .080 back in 2009 and it was something else from todays .080 from 8string set- didn't like it at all. The guys like JT can tune down even standard 7string sets to the lowest tunings and sound "nice" like in here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fX_dnKl8lqqaoc0 . So your arguments about who used bass strings are just your ill fantasy and BLA BLA BLA. I know only Korn did this and their guitar tone sucks and always sucked. Their sound overall was good only because of the innovative BASS sound and Head's songwriting.

i got a 4-string bass that i converted to a 5-string for low tuning "guitar" stuff like this. It's got an Ibanez 7-string pickup in the middle/neck, and a piezo bridge wired together in series for a snarky tone, and i run it in drop D1, 105-30 set (stringjoy) for essentially a range between standard bass 4 and baritone. the 34 inch scale gives it the clarity for all that distortion. It basically sounds just like Black Tongue's Eclipse tone. I run it through a splitter pedal i made and it goes to 3 amps, a bass head fed through a flextortion with gain CRANKED and a mid-cut running pure treble, and then a fender guitar amp with 2 speakers, mids and treble up, gain on 6, and finally the third amp is a sony subwoofer running clean. Together is basically sounds like a whole band in unison. I got like 11 basses and 4 baritone guitars, (all home-built, none of them over 6 strings) but just that one amp chain and i just turn any combo of those 3 on with a master switch setup. get's like 15 tones just by on/off and the distortions on and off. works great for me. I get love of low tones and gain but i prefer 5-6 strings. There's just never a need for more strings, just longer fatter strings. i think for a lot of bands, the extra strings is just a dick-flex, honestly. a baritone or bass would suffice better but it doesn't have the status of "i have 39.7 strings bruh." some people utilize them all, but i;d say a small percentile.

Sounds like a sick setup apart from the Sony sub... I would DIY a good sub. Can be done for 100bucks and go REALLY deep! Dayton audio has some good and inexpensive ones. If you want to spend more i can recommend the Eminence LAB12 in about 100Liters Bassreflex tuned to 20hz or lower. 100L sounds big yet is quite compact when shaped smart. Just built one for a friend who only has a 3x4meter room and it doesn't look out of place

I own a Josh Travis Legator signature actually but i tune it C#F#AEADGCF (4th minor3rd 5th and 4th's all the way up). It's a pretty damn good guitar, im a sucker of neck-through designs but the EMG 909X are not quite clear enough to me so changed them with some Lundgren m9. Legator is actually making a new 9 string model soon (N9) and im pretty hyped !

I'm playing a fanned fret 7 string in what I call Mirrored tuning; FCGDgcf; half fifths, half fourths. 3 strings worth of 1-finger power chords, and all you have to do is lay a finger across a whole fret and you can strum and add fifths/octaves to any drop-chord you're playing.

@tfwnoyandere adding to what you're saying, guitars in modern recordings are often high passed at 100 Hz minimum, so even in standard tuning the fundamental isn't audible on the lowest notes. Aaaaand if you're listening to recordings on a phone speaker you're generally not getting anything from any instrument below about 150 Hz.

@Weedbringer666
@Weedbringer666 3 жыл бұрын
Go to stringtensioncalculator.com/ You can calculate your most suitable gauge depending on your scale length and the string tension you want :) You can also adjust the scale length for each string, which is delightful if you have a multi-scale instrument. I typed in your parameters, and went for a light tension : 9 - 13 - 16 - 22w - 29 - 41 - 61 - 82

For me a 8- and more string guitars is just another fashion, pushed by producers-influencers-endorsers combo to perpetuate sales. The end result is a ton of extended range instruments in hands of clueless, wanna-be guitarists, who cover their lack of basic musicianship by ridiculous tunings, 00000... "riffs", spam of dissonant intervals and unlistenable chugging. And with them - a ton of unlistenable noise disguised as a "new music genres". And yes extended range guitars have their place. Check Beyond Creation for example. They use 8-string guitars and pretty much maxed out their intended use: EXTENDED range guitars.
