This is an amazing series Max, thank you for making these videos. If you don’t mind, I have a question. I’ve seen a lot of debate of Saiga 12s vs Vepr 12s, and the general consensus is that stock Veprs are better than stock Saigas, and therefore a better purchase. This is compounded by the fact that the Saiga, which I believe is already more expensive, has to have a crap load of modifications done to have all the same features as the Vepr 12. But what about military-grade Saigas, the ones that have never been built, then taken apart and rebuilt in order to conform to US importation laws? In other words, what about the “true” stock Saiga 12? The two biggest advantages the Vepr 12 boasts over even those kinds of Saigas is a vertical magwell and an unregulated/self-regulated gas system, which makes it supposedly fire low-quality rounds more dependably. The problem with both of those things, to me, is that the gas system results in a loss of velocity, which would not only cut down on power but range as well; and I’ve seen videos of people cycling 200 Walmart rounds in a row from Saiga 12s as fast as they can with absolutely no issues. No failures to feed, no jamming, etc. Also, I’ve heard that the rock and lock AK mag system, while a bit more awkward at first, is actually more reliable than a mag well for various reasons. Also, I recall seeing a torture test video of the Saiga 12 where three were dragged through watery mud, shot twice, then put back in the watery mud and ran over with a truck, and shot two more times and ran flawlessly. Now, obviously if you modify the Hell out of either one, both would be just as good as the other since they’re essentially overall the same gun but with various differences. One thing I saw you say in a previous video is that you think people only prefer the Vepr 12 because it was designed from the start to be a very civilian-friendly weapon, while the Saiga from the start was made with military use in mind, so when it comes to using lower-grade civilian ammo and just wanting to use a gun for fun, the Vepr 12 is more likely to outshine the Saiga here in the West without mods. So, in your opinion, which of the two do you think fulfills their intended role better? The Vepr 12 definitely seems more ergonomic, but the Saiga 12 was designed to be used for life and death military action and even had input from Kalishnikov himself. So that in mind, it seems like the odds are against the Saiga 12 in a US civilian market, but as a military shotgun, it seems like it would run better in its intended role than a Vepr 12 would in its intended role.
@MaxHeadspace9mm
@MaxHeadspace9mm 5 жыл бұрын
Michael Brooks I think you summed it up beautifully. The Saiga 12 was first. US import laws wreaked havoc on people who wanted them in the original military config. Plus high brass rounds are expensive and tiring to shoot so people often come to the conclusion that cheaper ammo would be nice to be able to shoot through these and make a lot of mods that the Saiga 12 was never really designed for. Along comes the Vepr 12 designed for the civilian marketplace and for most people that settled the issue. Personally I prefer the Saiga 12. It’s a simpler shotgun (like a Glock pistol) and I think that’s an important distinction. It’s the only one that was originally designed to be full auto capable and personally I feel more confident rocking and locking those big, heavy mags and drums rather than hoping I hear a click when I insert a straight pull type mag. It’s all just personal preference but I’ve noticed more competition shooters who actually use shotguns of this type used the Saiga’s when they were more available. Not as much now because they are getting rather rare. And I suppose knowing that makes me appreciate them also. I have three Saiga 12’s: -My first one I converted myself and feature through most of this video -an unconverted (sporter config) featured in the beginning of this video and - a model made in the original military config imported without any alterations. (My favorite) I’ve wanted to do a video about them for a while now but KZbin has removed all my monetization and is doing something in their algorithms that cause all my new videos to get virtually no views and my subscribers don’t even get alerts anymore so I’m not sure I will be putting my effort into making videos on this platform anymore. 😔

@@MaxHeadspace9mm you are right but if u want practice to get use to it why spend god loads of money to get a hang of the-fire arm. I get it i have a Kalashnikov 12 tactical it seems in order to go to the range and use range rounds u need to modify the fore arm to shoot lesser rounds usually u modify to go up not down. But i know for a fact your fore arm cycles perfectly because of the hi-grade rounds. Seems to be some of the shot gun fire arm flaws. Just saying other than that nice vid almost seems like your sponsored most people who are not when they advertise they show the good the bad and the ugly side of things so the viewer gets a full scale of what they are getting in to. Just my two since no offense but most people watch youtube to learn and try in most cases if they watch ur video and go buy one they will think its junk how ever watching youtube before i even got mine i got a reliability kit which is why they make a reliability kit because realistically a shot gun should shoot what ever round u out in it given its a 12 gauge. But seems 12 gauge mag fed fire arms have this flaw. And most viewers will want tonsee that flaw before they just become first time buyers thinking vid is accurate and dont go to the range and load it up and out up for self defense using a normal 12 gauge round and it jams after first round. Due to insufficient gas issues with low bras rounds!!! Just saying but i like the vid either way. Honestly gets more views. But someone else’s ignorance from not doing more research could get them killed especially say this video was the only one on the net showing a smovely running shot gun/ fire arm and the only thing doing that is particular rounds. Not just a gas setting that was made for those lesser rounds! But again cool vid! I liked it! But i Know 😂

@MaxHeadspace9mm
@MaxHeadspace9mm 6 жыл бұрын
Jose Murillo I don’t think there’s any problem with your drum. Usually failure to eject is the result of either a poor extractor or the bolt not going back far enough to eject or not going back forcefully enough to eject. My first piece of advice would be to try some higher power ammo. Slugs would be best because they tend to create more back pressure in the gas system and are usually some of the highest power loads out there. If you still don’t get good ejection after this let me know.

Jose Murillo Drums must run much higher spring tension in order to move all those rounds quick enough to keep up with the demands of a lightning fast bolt. Try just putting a few rounds in the drum and see if it works as well as the original stick mag.

When a Saiga 12 is new it is common to need to use heavy loads to get full cycling because they are designed to be a combat weapon. Mine has about 500 rounds through it and it now will cycle reliably with just about any load including target loads. But if you want results quicker you can get an aftermarket gas plug which allows fuller cycling on small loads. I don’t recommend drilling the gas ports like some folks do. I have four perfect running Saiga 12’s and they all run perfect without any Permanent mods.
@kevinjones2303
@kevinjones2303 6 жыл бұрын
What about the 10 round promag stick. I got 4. 1 of the four worked right. 1 of them only didn't push up the last round. And 2 of them didn't push rounds up all the way thru. So I tried breaking them in loading and unloading..... the spring inside 1 of them shattered, and when I took the mag apart it exploded.
@MaxHeadspace9mm
@MaxHeadspace9mm 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Jones Yeah I made the mistake of buying a pro mag too. Nice looking mag but didn’t even get one round in it. Apparently it was built out of spec because mine was too small inside for a shell to even fit. So I didn’t include it in the review. I’ve got promags for other guns and I’ve had no trouble. They must have made a bunch with problems and let them leave the factory before thy worked out the bugs.

@MaxHeadspace9mm 6 жыл бұрын
John Nygren When I first got mine I thought I had made a mistake. It only worked reliably with very heavy loads. So I determined that I would only shoot slugs with it and didn’t use it much. Many times I came close to selling it. It seemed like the most useless gun I had. One of the times I was planning on selling it I took it out shooting one last time and found that I actually enjoyed slug shooting and changed my mind. I started adding upgrades like a rail system and all the tactical mumbo jumbo you see in it now in this video. I got into hot rodding it and it soon became one of my favorites. Then I found more recently that I can shoot even low brass target loads through it. It’s now one of the last guns I would ever sell and I have a total of three of them in different configurations. Each one has a different personality and something special to offer. I suspect that these shotguns just need a prolonged break in period. I can’t figure it any other way. It still uses the original internal parts: no special gas valve or puck or spring. I actually think that may be part of most people’s problem with them. The Saiga 12 was designed for military high brass loads so that’s what you should use it for. Most people want to shoot target loads and cheap bulk ammo right away to save money. So they start working on modifying their Saiga 12s to that end but actually exacerbate the problem. If there’s one thing I’m confident of it’s that the Russians know how to make firearms. We just need to understand how to use them as they were intended.

GAT0R BUD Yes glad you noticed! The shotgun I used for the first mag demo was an unconverted Saiga12 with no muzzle brake on it. I’m so used to shooting my hot rod shotty that it always catches me by surprise when I grab the unconverted one. It pushes back pretty hard when you rapid fire. Just goes to show what a difference all those modifications make. I should have explained that in the video.

Haha! Yeah that always takes me by surprise. I have three Saiga 12’s. The one that shoved me back is Un modified and nearly new. They always kick hard when they are new and I rarely shoot that one so it surprised me a little. The other one I’ve had for years and I’ve got well over 1,000 rounds through it. It also has a Molot muzzle brake. It shoots like a dream as you can see from all the other demos.

30 caliber Liberty It shoots any power loads I put in it. I simply turn the gas knob to the #2 setting and blast away. I do that for skeet. Honestly the most fun for the saiga12 is how well it handles heavy loads. Amazing how much destruction this thing can deal with such little effort.

Stick mag is king. Drum mag is clumsy.
@MaxHeadspace9mm
@MaxHeadspace9mm 6 жыл бұрын
Internet Troll True. If you want the easiest to load and least bulky or least complicated then stick mags are definitely the choice. But I would say the mini drums are pretty close to being as easy and they don’t hang down near as far and they almost seem to disappear under the gun. They are my favorites for those reasons. The 20 round drums are mostly for competitors who want to minimize reloading. They are harder to load, heavier and more bulky. Much more costly too. But if you really need 20 rounds on tap they are the only game in town.

When people say "Saga" it makes me puke a lil in my mouth, like when people call the SPAS a "SPAZ". Like, proper english says you should say it like the russians do... because Sai is "Sigh" not "Say". Rafael from ninja turtles doesnt use "Says" does it? No... They are Sais "Sighs". Unfortunately, the same people that say Saga are the same that will instantly correct you when you say "Clip" instead of "Magazine". How about we all say the stuff right, we have google... Magazine goes in the Sigh-guh.

crystal fyst I agree with that but I have found that of all the mags for all the firearms I’ve ever used there are more varieties of magazines for the Saiga 12 than almost any other popular firearm. And some work flawlessly no matter what shells you put in them, some are finicky and some don’t work at all. Making a detachable magazine fed shotgun takes tons of engineering to get things to work right. I just wanted to share what I’ve learned. I’ve gotten mine crazy reliable while many people tend to struggle with this weapon. So did I at first.

Just how do you know which mags will wear out first and which ones will last the longest? Metal doesn't always outlast polymer. Russian doesn't always outlast American or Korean. Sounds like assumptions and guessing on your statements and predictions.
@MaxHeadspace9mm
@MaxHeadspace9mm 6 жыл бұрын
Money Shot You are correct to some extent. No, I haven’t worn out all these mags but I have worn out a lot of mags and what I’ve learned is that there are two causes for the death of a mag; Breakage and wear. Mags that have internal steel molded into the polymer will not die due to broken locking lugs. This is the reason quality mags are made that way. A magnet can tell you if your polymer mag has steel in the locking lugs. Springs rarely break but I have seen it happen on cheaper mags imported from countries which are making them cheap for the civilian buyer. Springs can also lose their tension over time if the metal is poor quality. Now as for wear that has to do mainly with two things; the abuse the user gives it and the material out of which the mag is made. Some polymers will actually rival steel in durability. But bottom line I simply base my analysis on my own experience as well as observation of many shooting friends and people I talk with. It’s not hard to get an opinion out of people. And in the gun community there are plenty of strong opinions to go around. There is also plenty of poor quality products which aren’t mil spec but look that way to the casual observer. So I agree with you. My opinions are those of a guy who has used and worn out a lot of stuff and knows and talks to many others who do the same. Take what I say with a grain of salt as you should with anyone in a KZbin video.

Please don't misunderstand me Max........I wasn't doubting your statements or assessments one bit as I'm very familiar with magazines of all types as well as their components, design, and countries of origins and we all have our basic common sense rules of thumb and/or "in theory" guidelines and rating systems which are all formed and based on a good bit of fact and truth as history has proven however.........I will even bet most of your ratings and assessments are accurate and correct and I as well as most of your subscribers and other KZbinrs as well would just love and appreciate it if perhaps in another 6 months or a year if maybe youd do a follow up video OR......if you've already ran into issues or total losses with any mag or drum......maybe just drop an update or review. I'm familiar with guns and love AK platform rifles but I'm actually new to the 12ga AK platform having just bought 2 new SDS Imports Lynx 12 after doing lots of reading and research and talking to credible SOT guys and I'm now in the process of accessorizing and rigging them out. In fact.......my Promag 20rd drum just showed today (MD has shut down and replacement parts dried up as well since you made this video.....they didn't last long did they? Even with such a good product and reputation...) but regardless.......I do certainly appreciate your video and apologize if I came off as rude or ungreatful .......as that wasn't at all my intention. Was just an observation Max.

Money Shot Hey no problem. I think it’s good to question the method one uses to come to their conclusions or recommendations. Some get products to review and I would assume there may be a bias when this is the case. I don’t. I don’t have near enough views for manufacturers to bother with. But doing a follow up to this video is a great idea! Thanks for that. I will be glad to do that. People seem to have a lot of trouble with AK platform shotguns and I am thrilled to be able to help make the learning process easier because it’s worth it. So much fun and home defense to be had from these. I nearly gave up in frustration with mine. Now I have three and love them. Once you’re hooked, you’re hooked😉

Jonathon Black Did you notice how for the rest of the video I was able to pound out 8-10 shots of high brass at blazing fast speed with no noticeable recoil? The first Saiga 12 was an unconverted one with no muzzle break and the rest were my converted competition Saiga12 with a Molot Tank Brake. I did that to illustrate the huge difference a little modification like that can make. I have 3 Saiga 12s so I’m pretty familiar with them as well as how to manage recoil. Thanks for watching.

@MaxHeadspace9mm 6 жыл бұрын
Jonathon Black You are correct that you have no tolerance. You seem to be way too angry about a video on the web. Yes I agree I was not positioned correctly. Why does that make you angry? If you watch all the other shots I took in the rest of the video you see I do it correctly so why focus on one time when I don’t for whatever reason. Clearly you can see I demonstrate that I am capable of firing this shotgun effectively so why do you feel the need to blow your top about the time I don’t and act like I’m a criminal for doing so? This is kind of a crazy conversation, don’t you think? I mean seriously, tomorrow or a year from now will this really matter to anyone? Is it worth having a bad day over or thinking I’m a terrible person because once out of ten times I didn’t lean into the shot? Listen, I rarely shoot my unconverted Saiga12. It usually takes me a bit by surprise how much more recoil it has compared to my converted ones. So it pushed me back a bit. There I admit it. You win the argument. Am I forgiven?

@MaxHeadspace9mm
@MaxHeadspace9mm 6 жыл бұрын
Fractured Hearts I am one of those kind of guys who likes to figure out how to do stuff like that too. They are a different rock n lock system and I don’t know if they can be modified in some way to work but I do see a possibility that you could take a Saiga 12 stick mag, remove the spring and cut it near the top and join the bottom section mechanically to the top section of a SAS12 mag that has also been cut. Then you would create an extended mag that would lock into the SAS12. This procedure has been done many times by competitors who just want more capacity. I bet it would work but you would need to buy two mags to get the high cap mag you want.
