Hi Mads , Here is a caulking tip. After you pull the tape , spray window cleaner over the caulking , then when you run your finger over the caulking the excess will not stick to anything because everything is wet . Your caulking line will perfect . Just use a small amount of caulk . David:

Best keep on keeping on right past Murphy award!! Also, switching to narrow pad (thin foam) sanding blocks, you quickly learn to cut your pressure by 75% and time before checking by 50%..... yup, lesson learned, but we'll worth the decreased effort and time.

Hi Mads, as always another awesome video. I truly appreciate the effort you put into your KZbin channel. The problem you had with your paint is called crinkle. It happens when a previous coat of paint is not fully cured due to temperature or humidity. The surface of the paint may feel dry to the touch but underneath it it is still soft. Sometimes this can also occurs when Oil based paint is applied to thick. The surface will skin over not allowing it to fully cure. A another layer of paint applied to the previous coat that is not fully cured causes star patterns or extreme ridges in the two layers as the top layer is shrinking from the solvents guessing off. As The solvents in oil based or two port urethane paints gas off the volume of the area is reduced. This is why when you sand the wood down you were left with voids in the two layers. The sander pulls the soft paint out of the two layers leaving pockmarks.

Hi Mads, Love your videos. Sorry, I know this is late. Just found your channel and am binge watching! Contamination on rollers and in paint will have certain signs. The "repeater"effect from the roller. Or you will find problems on all areas you painted after getting the roller contaminated. Contamination on your wood may not come out with very thin coats. But once you add a thick coat, or apply two coats close together, the excess paint (and solvent) can work its way into the wood and extract the contamination (unless you have added a sealant or barrier coat). First thin coats are clean, later thicker coats get messed up. Hope this helps...Keep up the terrific work!

I really enjoy your channel. No one is perfect and you are not afraid to show us some mistakes. Most people actually learn more from their mistakes than from their successes. They end up saying "Well I won't do it that way again" and remember the episode better. Even watching someone else make a mistake has similar results. Don't get me wrong, doing it right the first time is always best and what we all strive for, it just doesn't work out like that 100% of the time. Have a good time on your trip to NYC, wish I could be there to meet you, but my health won't permit that.

It may pay off to rig up a "spray booth" with plastic foil and Some wood or plastic piping. Before painting anything in it spray with water from a plant water sprayer to bind any dust particles flying in the air. Then put your workpiece in there and paint. For instance the chart table top. Love your vids, alle the best from Holland!

here in the states, a common product at the Home Improvement Center it is 1 inch thick polystyrene foam board used for insulation .I can cut a sanding block to any size I desire ,and using a can of spray adhesive, glue the Sandpaper to it. you can even make longboards out of it as it does flex. and when it's all used up or no longer needed just throw it away

Sorry if someone already posted this Mads, I'm at work between appointments and don't have time to read the comments, but with regard to caulking, try pushing the gun forward instead of pulling it like you're doing. The nozzle does most of the clean up for you that way and the caulk seems to go in deeper. You can even shape the nozzle with a razor knife to achieve certain finishes and fit particular cracks.

Since as you say the first few coats went on fine and dried well, the ONLY thing I can think of is that some sort of contaminant landed on that panel before your last layer of paint... I WOULD have said that, in the past I have observed contaminants bleed through layers of paint before, but that would involve a *whole* long explanation and you had a perfectly dried painted surface. Hope that problem went away
@wallacegrommet93437 жыл бұрын
I am the guilty party on the wet sanding block suggestion. My best results were obtained wet sanding between each coat, starting after the second coat. But I let the block mostly glide on its film of water, never bearing down on with more than the weight of my hand. Whereas you....well, did it somewhat differently.🙄 Your multiple coat approach to the paintwork is exactly correct. Oil base paints cure best when applied in many thin layers to build a tough elegant appearance that no other paint formula can equal.
@SailLife7 жыл бұрын
I simply got a little too eager with the sandpaper ;) There was a small "dimple" I was trying to remove. I did but took a lot of varnish off at the same time. At least the surface is now completely smooth and flat ;) I'm not normally that aggressive when sanding in between coats :) What foamback sanding block thingy do you use? the one I got is not super comfortable to work with.
@wallacegrommet93437 жыл бұрын
My sanding block is all rubber, pretty hefty, with two slots cut at opposite ends to secure the sandpaper. Small nail points inside those two slots perforate the sandpaper and hold it fimly over the flat base. When I saw your block I wondered how well it would work. Expert painters and varnish applicators strive to acheive the Lake of paint" appearance during application, like a mirror-smooth boby of water. Foam brushes may not be the best for that. Get one really good oval profile varnish brush for final coats that flow out perfectly flat and smooth.

Satee manager, did you mean to say site manager??? Please don't think I'm teasing (much), I absolutely love you videos but I found that the funniest part of this video ;) I currently work as a Boatbuilder in Brisbane Australia and I aspire to become a project manager in the marine industry dealing with change management on difficult projects, most likely in resprays to begin with.. then once I have a grip on the processes involved in change management of a project, I will hopefully move on to refits and new builds, once again I love your videos, I am currently binge watching them after work every single day, 5-6 at a time, in order, every night before bed, they are terrific.. hopefully one-day soon I will catch up to real time, however that will also be a sad day because then I will have to wait until every Sunday night or possibly Monday accounting for the time difference , peace out

When smoothing out "wet" caulk, wet your finger. What grit sandpaper did you use on the chart table ? Next time go up to a higher grit. Using a sanding block is best when sanding flat surfaces. You will need some "long board" when you get to the finish coats on the hull.

I have had the same trouble with your painted plywood. Mine was caused by dry areas in the lay up if the plywood. These expanded when painted causing cracking and bubbling. This disappeared on the next painting as the wood was sealed by the previous failed paintwork.

When warnishing I prefer do the final sanding with some fine steel wool ( 00 to 0000 grade). However you need to be really really careful not to leave any piece of the steel wool on the surface, otherewise it's going to rust in a few weeks and look really ugly...

Given how long you have been trying to dry out the hull have you given any thought to 1) DIY vacuum moisture extraction using plastic drop cloth, duck tape, a drain tube and catch bucket and manual or electric vacuum pump. There are professional setups but they cost big bucks. 2) taping plastic sheet just below the gunwale and using some means to hold lower edge of sheet away from the boat. It would seem water/rain will flow over the exposed bare fiberglass , slowing the drying process Just some thoughts Doug in VT USA

Are you going to be using some sort of microcontroller for your mood lighting? As for the paint problem, the first thought that I had was your hand. You rub your hand over the surface after each coat. Maybe before applying that last coat you had some excess oil/grease on your hand that was transferred to the surface? That's my 2 cents.
