Your mid-Atlantic swimming adventure reminded me of an event which in the Royal Navy is called 'Hands to Bathe'! We were on passage aboard HMS Albion in the early 1970's. She was a Commando carrier and I was part of 42 Commando RM which was the embarked force, so not technically part of the crew. The Skipper decided it appropriate to invite us to swim so hove to and launched the sea-boat for safety. The instructions were simple. Do not swim further away than the sea-boat and do not try and dive under the ship. Access to the water was via a 30-foot jump from a cat-walk along the starboard side and getting back aboard was via the ship's ladder - lowered for the occasion. Having jumped in and swam away from the next guy jumping on top of us I swam manfully towards the sea-boat for probably a hundred yards or so. I turned - expecting to see the ship a hundred yards away - and was shocked when I discovered it had followed us sideways driven by the breeze and was only about 25 yards away! Then I looked down realising that the Mediterranean is several hundreds of metres deep and looked very dark. I shuddered in a prehistoric sort of way as a result of the sudden surge of adrenaline which was generated by my imagination as to what might be lurking in the deep. That was when I decided I had had enough of swimming hundreds of miles from land and went back aboard! 🤣🤣

Nice work with the rudder bushing fix. An experienced sailor that I met a few years ago had circumnavigated in his valiant 40. I told him about my dream to sail around the world and the first thing he said was: “how are you at fixing stuff”. 😂 good work so far. Fun to see your progress.

Hi Guys, glad to see you have a nice weather window to get started with thwpe Crossing, have a great Sail. 👍 Just been looking at your Osmosiis videos, and Barrier coating, and hoping to get a nice guy new to sai, ing, withvaclovely Cintessa 26 as his first boat, butvit has a serious Osmosis problem, that I don't think he appreciates what a problem it is just yet, so going to be sending him to watch and rewatch your videos. Must add, lo Ed your Copper Coat video, my favourite antifouling, I almost put on my last boat, I seriously love the stuff . BUT the only way to have Coppercoat then, and right now, to get it done rifpght, is to do it like you did, Yourself ! Nearly everyone I knew then, 7 years ago, who had it done by an Agent, the Agent Screwed up the application of it, and 7 years later, it seems there is this Agent Screwing up the app,I action problem, which sucks for those of us who cannot do it themselves, which disabled me, just can't take the risk. Coppercoat themselves, are brilliant to talk to, but again, next boat I'm going to have no option but to use different antifouling. Back then I used Pettit Trinidad Pro Hard, applied proper.y by a really good boatyard in Massachusetts, which gave Clean Hull for 3 years, and easy to clean off slime, for up to another 4 years, closest now, may be Trinidad Vivid, 4 coats of white, and burnish it to a nice polished finish. White is available, and it makes sense to have white antifouling. Should do Three years OK. Great to have your videos to recommend, keep well, Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

Copious amounts of superglue will fix the string for your glasses Ava, go to it! Spinnaker and asymmetric, you need to be Hawkeye for squalls and other sudden changes, so I'm in complete agreement with you decision to not to deploy it, although the extra speed is addictive! Auto pilot working well.... and wind vane, perfect. It's great to see all the work and features built into the boat working so well. Looks like you're having fun, fingers crossed for the rest of the journey.

Congrats on the progress! With the spinnaker, it is a good idea to have your main set and use a preventer. If you need to get the sail down in a hurry, you can blanket it with the main by heading down typically below 150 apparent. It would collapse.

Hello Ava and Mads, Really enjoy your youtube videos. I watch several sailing channels and enjoy yours regularly. I live on Guam Island out in the Western Pacific. Not many youtube sailors come this way, we are East of the Philippines and China, North of Australia and closer Federated States of Micronesia, South of Japan and Okinawa and the Ryukyu islands and Northern Marianas Islands, and West of not much for a long way. I would think Micronesia wound make nice cursing but not much activity. By the way, Morey Eels in Micronesia have the fish toxin Churriguera which can be fatal, and are not often eaten. Ya all be careful. Rick Wood

Plastic rudder bearings can swell substantially with water absorption (nylon is particularly prone) and thermoplastics have a thermal expansion coefficient between two and five times that of a stainless rudder stock. So there are multiple simultaneous contenders and dependencies for the trouble you had.

Hello there 'Guys' .... The 'Rudder Bushing' ...... IF the Bushing is made from Any Type of NYLON, you need to make allowances for the fact that ALL the Nylon Materials are VERY Hydrascopic and will Swell Massively in a damp environment .... That is why I usually use an Acetyl .... As it Also has a Very Low Coefficient of Friction between Stainless and Acetyl......'Nylatron' is also a better option than the 'Common or Garden Type' nylons.... Best to ALL from ChCh, NZ

Mads it's good to see you and Ava out doing what you love. I remember years ago people would make comments about how you would never be done on that somewhat extensive refit and sail But not me I knew that you would do it. The Spinnaker looked really good, and I like how you use a blue sheet for it. Athena is more beautiful and a better both then she was new. I wonder if the previous owner in Scotland follows you. I hope he's proud of what you have done. Looking forward to more adventures with you two.

So moving to me! This reminds me of the emotions of our first milles across the Atlantic after checking and re-checking everything in Las Palmas. Our windvane ("Ari" a servo-pedulum by Aries) had been extensively tested since Cannes. For me, a windvane, along with baking bread and fishing is symbolic of offshore sailing. I could - and I often did - argue about redundancy of serial vs parallel systems. But the true reason is irrational: I like it. Wind powers my boat, wind must steer her! Just an advice: even becalmed we never ever swam together.⛵🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️ Fair winds and glorious sailing 😉

So please for both of to be crossing the atlantic. Lovely you had a gentle introduction to being at sea again, address the steering issue and get to grips with the wind vane. As you are inexperienced with spinnaker handling and are short crewed, it's very wise to set parameters for flying it, best not to fly in changeable conditions. Hope you have a sock for it. Can Amazon do a drone delivery of some more shade material? you wouldn't want to miss out on the opportunity for a project!
