I met you in Mindelo at the start of the marina jetty and thanked you for your video on reflex stoves. Anyway, a guy actually pulled a knife on me about 30 meters from that same location. I had a ice-cream in my hand and was caught off guard but managed to grab his hand and after a lot of shouting he backed off. Was very crazy.. glad I was 5 beers deep. Still love your videos. Keep it up man

I was fascinated to hear your thief encounter in Mindelo, because I had the opposite experience - 42 years ago. My wife and I were sailing our 41' sloop from Europe to Brazil, and we stopped in Mindelo. The Cape Verde Islands (and Angola, etc) had recently been granted independence from Portugal after the anti-Salazar revolt. Mindelo was left with virtually no economy, and was in the midst of a killing drought; it hadn't rained in two years. The only food in the market was clearly marked bags of US foreign aid rice. I've never been anywhere so obviously impoverished. We were anchored off the town (there was no marina) and our inflatable dinghy was improperly tied off, and drifted away during the night. The prevailing wind would have sent it far across the bay. The following morning we were about to set off in search of it, and a man appeared on shore with our dinghy. He had found it washed ashore about 3 1/2 miles west, and, assuming it was from a boat anchored off the town (no such dinghy existed in Mindelo) he carried it around the bay and to the town dock in order to return it. Although he was obviously impoverished and the dinghy would have represented a substantial windfall, he declined any payment for his effort. That's my primary memory of Mindelo - Extreme poverty and extreme generosity. Incidentally - have you considered a detour a bit farther south? Fernando de Noronha is just a short trip due South, and from there just a couple of days to Recife. Bingo...new country, new language, new continent. And, the trip from Recife to Granada is the easiest 2000 mile sail on earth - with consistent favorable winds and 2-4 knots favorable current. Brazil is not to be missed!

Really great idea to log the places you find while in port for cruisers! So many cruising channels are about the videography and beauty shots and less about where to go when visiting. It could be a nice niche for your channel after the focus on restoration.

I don't see anyone else saying this, but I may have missed it, but the oil could be from the change of pressure while on the flight. If there was some air in the system it would expand in the air and may have pushed oil pass the seals.

ANOTHER informative video from Mads & Ava! it was lucky for the thief that he didn't choose me or I'd be trying to hide the body behind the green door! The most complex and expensive part of an auto pilot system and Athena has 3 of them! GOOD headwork! NO one will ever catch Mads or Ava hand steering Athena! Sorry about your burglary. Did you report it to the police? They may very well know who works that corner! I suspect he knew you had a roll of bills in your pocket by watching you in the markets. I am a pocket cash person as well.. don't carry much but usually in pocket and not wallet. Losing a wallet would be much more traumatic, even though no real cash in it, losing cards and Id's would suck. It sounds like he must have watched you prior, to know where the money was. Glad it was not violent, and definitely it's not worth getting injured over, for "catching" him.

@Ava, right where I live...OK, not too far. Saw the Exway Electric company. I'm between Port Huron and Detroit and drove that I-94 route daily to Dearborn for nearly 20 years. BTW: That tire was a Ferris Wheel at the World's Fair. As for the theft...ALWAYS ALWAY ALWAYS stay where people are. If/When you get to the Bahama's...don't take short cuts where people aren't walking around and in the public eye. As for the haggling, UGH...I HATE it. I know some love doing it, but I hate it. As for Barbados? Oh what a great place to go. We loved our time there, lots a friendly people. Drop down south and get to Bonaire and take in the reefs...WOW!

Great to see Eva back- "I like the color combination of this yellow wall and blue door with iron above..." I'm sure you are in the Caribbean by now, but if memory serves me, Barbados instituted some steep fees for arriving cruisers which combined with its remote location made it less attractive for cruisers to visit.

So sorry to hear you Guys got ripped off, Praying for Fair Winds And Following Seas On Your Passage.
@bocamax Жыл бұрын
You should buy some travel pants & shorts that have a hidden pocket inside the normal pocket that is secured with a zipper. You'll want that in the Caribbean as well. I also only walk around destinations with a PacSafe bag. The bags are slash proof. They also have mechanisms that are simple to open once you learn the trick but prevent pickpockets & bag grabbers from successfully getting your bag. For example, at a café, I just wrap the slash proof strap around a fixed object like a table so anyone trying to grab it will be out of luck. This is important if you walk around with a passport, money, laptop, etc.

For Ava and all fliers: never plug into an airport or public charger station. Some of them have been hacked to install malware. The only way to safely use them, is with a small widget that only passes power, not data. Or with a "power only" charging cable that has no data lines. Either way, only a $10 investment that belongs in every travel kit.

After years of watching your channel without any misunderstandings we are now officially two sailors divided by a common language. 🤔 In this part of the lower antipodes a "bill" is like an invoice. I immediately thought, "Well I hope he paid the bills for you after he ???robbed??? you." After re-watching that section I thought, "Waaiiit a minute. Maybe on the other side of the equator "bill" means cash, bank note." [insert forehead slapping] 🤣 Still, it's good to see you reunited with your other half. Fair winds.

It's not a Northern Hemisphere thing, it's a US thing. I just happened to hear Bill Bryson talking about how American English started to deviate from what was spoken in England, and one of the very first changes, in 1682, was to start referring to banknotes as bills.
@dufffredq8 Жыл бұрын
Thankfully you were not injured. That's what is most important. Unfortunate but lessons learned hopefully. Leave small money where the thieves can grab and run and bury the real bankroll. Be safe, always.
@billywhizz6483 Жыл бұрын
I arrived into Mindelo 3 days ahead of schedule (sailing from Maderia) with a fixed flight ticket out... I must admit that I didn't feel safe, with advice to not wear rings or watches and walk in groups. That was a few years ago though, so maybe things are better. I did feel awkward having the posh shops right by the marina and then clear poverty just a few streets away. Anyway, it was good to see some familiar sights again.
@ecleveland1 Жыл бұрын
Always split up your cash and credit cards. Keep a few small bills wrapped around some old cards that are no longer good or were never good would be even better. If you do get robbed you can quickly pull out the small bills, toss them and run screaming your head off. Anytime you pay for something try to always pay for it with the small bills and never pull out your larger stash of money because muggers sometimes see you pay for something and know which pocket you put your money in. My uncle used to keep a large rubber band around his cash so he could feel it being lifted out of his pocket if the pick pockets were about. He said he could also throw the banded cash and a robber would run after it instead of him.
