For long-range wifi nothing beats heigth of the antennas. You can't change where the onshore ones sit, but placing yours on the top of the mast will make a huge difference.

Gosh Ava, just for the self satisfaction factor I would have grabbed a stack of stickies and wrote "Insulation" on one and then stuck it in the "Done" column. You could even do that for trips to the grocery or marine store, post office, cooking dinner, washing dishes, etc. But I wouldn't get too carried away with it.

Mads, FYI. ... The 10 inch Filter Housing / Cartridge is standard in Canada, US and Mexico. 5 inch is available but not as easily. Some Asian manufacturers and other specialty manufacturers try to trick you into calling their housings 10 inch, but really only their filter cartridges will fit/work

For future reference, shrink sleeve, then tape on top, for the antennas. Makes removal, and subsequent cleanup easier. Alternatively, you can altogether ditch the tape, and just use shrink tube and a little bit of dielectric grease to positively displace any water that might seek to ruin your internets.

I saw one dodger set up with "track/zipper" they could use for full rain curtains or a solar blocking no see um mesh to reduce UV exposure and bugs in super sunny tropical places. I am older now and spent a lot of time in sun. Skin cancer and cataracts are no fun. Maybe comment helps. I hope so but you always make good choices and can plan for changes later once you test your new dodger out. Always a joy to watch. Thanks for another fun video.

It's not just the electronics. Lightning can damage hull, mast and rigging too. It can also can start a fire.

I've been working on a long range wifi setup using a Yagi directional antenna and a 2 axis gimble (pan and tilt). Essentially a Raspberry-Pi controls the servos that "lock" onto the wifi signal and keep the antenna pointed exactly at the Wifi AP (This is done through signal differentiation and a solid state 3 axis gyro / accelerometer board) This would correct for the motion of the boat while at anchor. Theoretically this would give you miles of range (LOS) with this type of antenna VS. an omni-directional one.

If you do go out sailing and the weather is reasonable don’t miss staying overnight in Newtown Creek on the north coast of the Isle of Wight. Lovely and peaceful nature reserve where you can pick up a buoy or anchor. Pete Sanders in Lymington makes great sails.

The pressure gauges seems to be just two more leaking points… would recommend documenting the replacement date and set a fixed interval and using a ppm meter to measure water quality on a regular basis.

Check to see if the 10" length filter bowl will fit the same top assembly. FWIW, 10" is all over Canada. I've never seen a 5" in the flesh and a lot of houses use 20" units. The gauges are definitely worth it.

Great video, just be aware of the power consumption of your boosters, we have them on the TV antennae circuit so they can be easily isolated, you'll need to do this on long passages. You need a small dehumidifier for condensation, they work wonders, particularly on aluminium and steel hatch and window frames, which can drip like mad. Well done!

I'm on the fence with my opinion on this subject. I think it's not such a good idea, I live on the coast and got fed up with corroded connections on my motorbikes wiring loom. Cleaned them up nice, reconnected then covered in dielectric grease. 6 months later the places subject to heat and vibration just caused more problems from the compound either melting slightly or working its way into the connectors - especially if you need to start unplugging and replugging something. Non conductive grease working it's way inside connectors or switches turned out to be more of a pain to diagnose than an obvious green and white furry build up around a terminal.

@@TheRattyBiker i am in NE Ohio, and they salt the hell out of the roads. I use marine grade dielectric grease. I fill the connectors with it. It makes service a dream, no corrosion on the portion that counts. I am confused when you say it works itself into the inside (that is where it belongs). What do ya mean sir? Looking at that beautiful counter on the galley island, you should build a little plywood cover for it to protect it when you want to use it as a work surface. You could stow it in the technical compartment when not in use.

Hello Mads I work with 4G in Norway. Just so you know, you can calculate the theoretical radio horizon with X as antenna height with various online calculators. 4G masts are usually between 10-30 meters tall depending on the structure or mast they are mounted on, some are higher at over 100 meters but not that many. You could in the future mount a 4G antenna at the top of the mast by for example moving one of the ones at the arch up there for better reception, i am not sure if this will mess up any MIMO on the 4G modem but as long as you move the correct antenna that does TX/RX then it will work with SISO. Also sure that the country you go to are broadcasting 4G in the correct bands and that the modem supports them.

Pressure gauges won't tell you anything, just change the carbon filter when you feel that water quality drops. You can also get 10 inch housing for the same base and use with the cartridge what you can get.

For the issue of condensation, check out the video from the channel. ...cruising lealea. ..video is called ...a warm dry boat.... they have found a product that was recommended by the local Alaskan fishing boats. It is an additive you can add to any paint. I think it is called Insuladd. They used a household latex paint, and it has solved their moisture problem. A warning today from the channel. ..gone with the wynns....regarding sails they ordered, paid for but never received. It's worth a look before you place your order. Love your videos

I have high hopes for Starlink on boats. I'm in rural France and the gains compared to the landline were life changing. When inter-satellite connectivity kicks in and they release consumer grade dishes for moving targets, it will surely change the state of boat connectivity forever. For sailboat having to install the dish on the mast to avoid obstruction would be a pain but you already have a radar powered by PoE you probably could add a synthetic aperture relative to keep it company. Although, having some disconnect, even frequent is not an issue when you have that kind of speed, you realize quickly that once everything take minutes or seconds instead of hours, the probability you were doing something important when the connexion drop is quite low so you notice it but don't care about it much.

@@TR4zest don’t know, nothing is 100%! But if a lighting hits the boat and other systems are protected and the 4g/WiFi is not it cal still fry all the electronics, wiring and batteries and cause a fire.

I would filter all water that go into your tanks. Some of the counties I have been to do not have what I consider POTABLE water.

I enjoyed the, "lesson" on the Locomarine Router setup. My wife and I will be traveling with a 5th wheel RV in remote parts of the American west after next year and I can see value in something like that for swapping networks on the rare occasions when we are hooked up and not dependent on cellular network for data. Athena is going to be a cutting edge example of electro-whizbang stuff by the time you turn west across the Atlantic.

We got Starlink a couple of weeks ago. Compared to our woeful 3/4G connection at 2Mbits, it's streets ahead. We are SE Australia country and there are trees, but we managed to get a good sight. I does drop out occasionally, but so good when it's working, which is most of the time,

For now Starlink is only for stationary use, so in a mobile environment (like a boat) it won't work yet.

Your wifi extender is a Mikrotik Metal 52ac, it seems to be rebadged to the company you purchased it from. Likely your other router is a rebadged mikrotik hash. I run mikrotik gear on my boat, super reliable!

Another great reason to install the carbon filter is if you are forced to take on water of questionable quality. As you fill the tanks, add a heavy dose of chlorine. That will kill any organisms. Then filter the choline back out as you use water. It's called hyper chlorination. Very useful in areas like the Caribbean, central and south America. BTW. The US and the rest of the Americas use the 10" filters in my experience.

@@jackdbur An external filter is a good way to remove sediment or chlorine from the incoming water supply. It will not remove or kill bacteria or parasites. You need to add a heavy dose of chlorine to the tank, let it sit in contact with the water for some time to kill everything, and then filter it back out with a carbon filter. This is not needed in most developed countries. But is often needed when you get off the beaten path.

i believe the water filter you have is a string wound sediment water filter and not activated carbon one, in order to eliminate choline taste reverse osmosis membrane would be required.

I didn't put a lick of work or planning into your beautiful galley island table top but it would sure be great if there is some cardboard that could be rolled out on that when you use it as a workbench. There are (or were) some campgrounds in the US that did run ethernet cables to the utility box so you could connect to the internet with a much faster and more dependable wired connection. And some made their internet available over the TV cable that also ran to the utility box for your camp site if you had your own cable modem and ethernet/wifi router. I haven't been sailing more recently than 15 years ago so can't verify that these same services aren't available at marinas. Have you run across any?

Mads, I would have started checking the RJ45 connector for the problem you had. I'm currently installing data cables (Cat 7) throughout my house, and several times I'm sure I got the fiddley small wires in the right slot, but no. However, for you it was a software problem so never mind hahaha
