Mads, as an Architectural Designer , I always look at how the space will work for people going and coming through the space and how it is used. I have been in this field for 42 years now and one of the biggest things I have learned about small compact spaces is to avoid 90 degree outside corners as much as possible. Your plan is good, however I would suggest you avoid having too many outside corners. For example, the island and salon table, the corners should be rounded/radiused. The exterior bulkhead corners should be rounded/radiused as well. If you can decrease the width of the Nav Table so that it does not protrude out in to the salon space that will not only free up valuable space but it will also decrease the chance of someone being hurt if they fall into the corner. That is the key, you have to look at the items in the space, and asked yourself , how can I minimize the risk of being injured when at sea and the boat is rolling.

Mads, a friend of mine with a 36' reconfigured his head to include a shower during his refit. He walled off the shower from the sink and toity. Looked great. Bragged about it. Then he used it on a weekend trip. Problem, even though he built a simulated model and stepped in it. His wife did also. They thought it was perfect. 6 months later he asked me if I wanted to help him remove the wall. His statement, you can never have too much room in the shower esp for bending over, extending arms and elbows. We removed the wall and moved the sink to be included in the shower so that when the curtain is pulled for a shower the sink is in there also. Sounds weird but the amount of room it frees up is incredible. The sink in the shower while using it does not get in the way and in many cases is helpful. Just think of the added elbow room. And the sink? so what let the shower water run on it, its a sink !

You did ask for suggestions. Since the majority of the shower will occupie the flat floor of the head. The curve space that is the starboard wall you should ask Ava if she would like a seat or bench area in the shower. I would utilize the curve of the boat for a tank. Waist tank/water tank whatever. Enclose the tank by building a shower seat/bench over it. You then can put up a closet rod over the seat/bench to hang wet clothes. I wish I could draw it out and send it to you. I think you probable understand. Keep up the great work I enjoy the videos. Hi Ava.

Mads, you almost have a bank canvas. A racing sailboat wants its mass centered so it can tack or gybe quickly. a cruising boat on the other hand wats its mass fore/aft and side to side. putting the diesel tank centered over the keel looses mass at the sides that will resist rolling at anchor. Hold a stick horizontal in front of you with weights taped at the ends, try to rotate it like the hands of a clock. It resists the movement. do it again with the weights in the middle and it rotates much easier. Use the diesel and water tanks to your advantage in making the boat more comfortable under way and at anchor. I would suggest diesel tanks at the sides and water forward to balance the engine. At anchor you will not be running the engine much if at all so the full diesel tanks at the sides will dampen the rolling. Enjoying your channel very much. :)

Mads, what about placing the table top on a gas jack arrangement so that when you're preparing food you will have both the island table and the dining table at the same height. A couple of tabs attached to the dining table will ensure that it comes to the same height as the centre island top when fully raised. The table can be lowered to the desired height for dining once the meal is ready and then also if the dining table is on a slider attached to the top of the gas lift, it can be slid under the top of the centre island when not needed. Hope this makes sense. Look forward to Monday mornings when your videos appear here in Western Australia. Good luck.

I totally agree with everyone who says don't partition into too many small spaces, unless you are going to have multiple occupants and that's a whole new design game that usually doesn't work. About room in the wet area, important points for me are a toilet that has a wide fold down panel that can be sat on for bracing during washing while underway as well as hides the toilet from view all the time, allows the toilet to be placed in view without any offensiveness attached. Its a feature of some beneteau that I really like. Another point is that the shower floorspace in a boat is or should be a multi-function area and if it isn't then it is taking up way too much space for a single function or its too small to be comfortably usable and makes extra walls to be wiped. Basin in the shower area and vic versa is the perfect way to ensure the whole space is used properly. Wet gear will also hang in this area so not too many high cupboards please Mads, keep the whole area airy and light and spacious. ( 650 x anything is way too small a space to do anything much in let alone wash). Also change the right angle wall corner next to the saloon seat, a 200 or 300 45 degree wall there will open that visually and physically without impinging on the wet area if you keep spacious. Otherwise quite like the new layout with the island and sliding table.

Good job on your bulkhead joint. There are many ways but I think you have come up with a winner on this aspect. As a side benefit you got a nice flat waterproof joint. The scarf joint would have been a big hassle to get flat. I only see a much stronger joint then if it was a whole piece. On plywood I agree totally, if it makes the specs then it is marine grade (waterproof glue and voids 'fixed') no matter what the advertising hoopla says. To any of other builders don't underestimate a biscuit joint but for boats follow Mads' solution.

Mads, you might want to put the shower to the back bulkhead and access your tech area through the shower with the sink and head forward and along the hull side. That way you don't have to move plumbing when accessing tech area.

One suggestion: I would think about some way to have direct access to the shower stall from the companionway (or, more precisely, the landing just below the companionway). Then, if you place a tension bar across the shower stall, when you are under way you could hang wet rain-gear from it without having to go through the rest of the head compartment. That would keep water from being dripped all over the cabin, and the head compartment; isolating the wetness to just the area around the companionway and the shower stall. The tension bar could then be easily removed and stored when not needed, returning access to the shower when at anchor or docked. A dedicated "wet" locker would be another way to accomplish this. But such lockers are almost always too small to allow enough air circulation for the rain-gear to actually dry out, and they tend to just turn into a mildewy mess filled with long-forgotten gear and such.

SHOWER SUGGESTION: create a seat on the hull side facing the centre of the boat. Showering underway is difficult. A seat will definitely help. Could use the under seat as a wet cubby to store shower supplies. (Girls tend to use more supplies, at least mine does)

If I am to add my two pence here I would say firstly that once again the work you are doing is amazing, I had the thought from the use of smaller bathrooms myself that the sink being in the shower area would give you tons more space and it really doesn’t matter if it gets wet (that is what it is designed for after all) but to keep the throne separate will make a big difference. as I said this is just my humble opinion, either way I look forward to your future videos.

Looks awsome! Consider using pocket doors (will probably only be possible for the side where the head is located because of the sculpted roof), this will free up some additional space and will also be very beneficial for ventilation during summer :) Concerning the shower - don't make it too small. This is the part of your bathroom where you move the most by a large margin.

My small recommendation would be for a wet locker inside the shower stall up against the hull. The area wouldn't be good for standing, but would be good for storing diving gear.

Just couple of ideas for the head and galley: -It could be a good idea to make the shower with a seat. That way you can have shower safely under way and also maybe use the space under the seat for black water tank or something? -For the galley, you should make the distance between the countertops narrow enough that you can brace yourself on the opposite side when cooking under way. Maybe stainless tubes on both sides as grab rails? Other than that, I really like the layout idea with big and usable head and shower. IMO they make the boat just that more livable.

You asked for feedback on the design of the new head. May I point out the following about the placing of the toilet. You mentioned you want room but also support. I think you should also allow for the amount of sailclothing that wil be ‘around your ankles’ when using the head under sail in foul weather. In my much smaller head I have difficulty using the toilet because of the amount of material I have to peel off before I can do the bussiness! I think putting the toilet in the middle could make a difference in this matter. Greetings from Amsterdam!

Super Spiffy! If the space allows, I would consider widening the shower (fore to aft) and placing the sink opposite of the head (head stbrd, sink port). The ability to tuurn around in the shower is a very welcome luxury, plus moving the sink towards the centerline will offer more standing headroom for getting ready in the morning. It would add a little complexity to the plumbing, but I think you would be glad you did it.

I've read that a common practice among 1970's and 80's boatbuilders was to attach foam strips to the hull where it met the bulkheads. This was to protect it from bulkhead work hardening and deformation and to allow for some degree of flex. Warrior left a gap instead. I'm not sure which is better, but it would seem foam would be helpful in reducing hull issues as well as filling the void.

Hi Mads, Just a thought, but if you use the shower as foul weather gear storage when underway, can you build in a radiator into the compartment from the reflex. That way you have nice dry wet weather gear each time you put it on. I sailed on a boat with this set up and it was a joy.

Last month I was in a hotel in Antwerpen and the layout of the bathroom (unit) had a quite interesting solution to the door. The door swings inside and then can be used as a door seperating the toilet from the rest of the bathroom. So 2 persons can use the bathroom at the same time :-) So maybe you can also use the door of your 'bathroom' as a kind of shower curtain or toilet seperator door when open?

A helpful tip for lasers....Hi Mads, I worked with lasers for many years in construction. It might be a good idea to check for parallel with the centerline (create a semi permanent reference line) of the boat. This may save some heartburn as the ausbau continues, and insure that everything lines up. Never trust a laser (bearing gifts), lol.

Mads, looking at your layout, I think you should consider the access to your “technical room”. The sharp turn (from entering the new head, then turning to the entrance of the tecnical room) will make it dificult to store or move items into there. In particular bicycles, dive compressors, or generators. Have you considered a large hatch from the cockpit? So that you could lower items down into the technical space? Otherwise, great work! Enjoying the refit.

I would offer my opinion that you might want to flip the swing of the door to the head. You will rarely be entering the 'technical' area and having the door covering it when you enter will be a small inconvenience. Having the door swing to the shower means you will always be trying to go around the door to get to the toilet and the shower, it will always be in the way.

Another great episode Mads and things are really starting to take shape now. As others have mentioned I would suggest having the toilet more towards the centreline of the boat and facing forward. Having it on the side like you have shown will make it pretty "interesting" to use when you are on port tack! On the subject of toilets have you considered installing a composting toilet like the Natures Head? It has several advantages - getting rid of two holes in the hull, no pump-out required and no icky clean out jobs...

One space, Throne facing aft on salon wall, basin on hull wall, walk through shower to get to tech room, hang wet gear on hull wall in shwr, shared floor no partitions, classic compact design for small spaces, best access you'll get to tech and using throne on a moving boat problem solved by being inline. that'll be 2c pls :)

Have a look at the aft head on a Norseman 447, the center cockpit version. It's a great example of everything you are looking for in what I suspect is about the same size space but a bit different layout than what you have in the drawing. Having the head near the door has some advantages when having to fix it down the road.

Nice work, as always! I would love to see you soften some of the corners in your plan. Eliminate as many hazards as you can. You never know when someone could be thrown off balance.

Mads, I hope you will consider mounting the head athwartships. Makes it easier to use when heeled. And to install an overhead "closet" bar in the shower, running fore and aft, so it can be used as a wet locker as well.

I disagree.... it's okay on one tack but you can be throw off on the opposite tack. I have sailed on boats set up both ways. The head on my boat faces forward and has a cabinet on one side and a bulkhead on the other. I've never been bucked off, even in big swells.

I would certainly make the heads/shower one room only built to wetroom standards with two floor drains. The shower would be isolated if required with a folding door or curtain giving a much larger shower area , 750x750 preferably and a hanging rail

Amazing how you are redesigning the interior of the boat. I never understood the bulkhead in the middle of the port.

Because of the movement of the boat, consider moving the sink(s) to the center island. This would also give you a workspace countertop next to the HOB,oven.

When you cruise you'll find the shower gets very little use. Deck showers are the norm (or marina showers). - And, when you plumb in the sink install a diverter valve from the sink drain to the head-flush inlet line. That way you can rinse the head with a bit of fresh water at the end. (Fill sink to desired level - open valve - flush, flush, flush till sink is empty. It's strangely satisfying.)

Deck showers don't see a lot of use in high latitude sailing, which Mads has said interests him. Not many marinas in those locations, either.

Have you considered makeing the bulkhead doors into pocket doors? Like the doors that slide into the walls. Just a thought to save some space

Make sure you have space enough to sitt when you put on/off your foulweather gear. Shower is a good space for weath clothing to drip off a little.

It's really funny how people insist on marine ply. Marine ply is only about 10% better than exterior ply and ie about four times the cost. In most applications the ply is going to be covered with epoxy, resin and maybe also glass or carbon fiber anyway. But then again most making comments about techniques and materials are armchair builders.

Remember when laying out bulkheads and cabinets to make servicing through-hulls as awkward as possible. Bonus points if you can force someone's head into the bilge while twisting there arm into a pretzel. If you can make it where they have no leverage to force in a bung while sinking you could win the Darwin Award! Just Kidding. I have seen too many remodels leave tasks almost impossible to do because they didn't think ahead. SO not your problem. :) The Hunter 260 has a curved door into the head that you might like to incorporate into your design.

Re: Plywood There is one company here in the US selling "marine" grade plywood at a discounted price. It use "water resistant" glue, Grade A Douglas-fir front and back veneers and Grade B (small cracks, large defects are plugged) Douglass-Fir inner plys. What you have is MUCH better

I’d be inclined to keep the shower area as open/large/simple as possible. As a minimum, you should be able to pick up anything dropped on the floor. It should also be as easy to clean as possible and well ventilated. I’d go for one big open area in the heads.

Hello mr. Good video as usual I enjoy all of them. Short question I am moving in to refurbishing a sailboat. And I am wondering have you considered el motors and compost heads ? In my experience being in different boats 2 things are common. Diesel smell (barf) and septic smell (dobbel barf) so I am going for El propulsion and compost head. Any insight for one of your patreons :) Best regards Norway.

How about putting the head facing towards aft where the blue jacket is? You could have one that has a cover over it, whenever in use, you lift it and it becomes the head, whenever you don't, you lower it and have space for stuff to be used behind it.

If you end up using the scarf joint, try using a router with large flat bit and a jig. It'll be messy, but I think you'll find you get better results and have more control.
