I've run the cable needed to get shorepower to a bunch of outlets in the boat. I've also made a prototype for a gangplank that will allow my dog to get on and off the boat without me lifting him. I had to cut this video a bit short as one of the liveaboards in Skive had invited me over to his boat for lunch. It's so cool to have awesome neighbours!

@1.40 At least the tax isn't as bad as Sweden. Loving the dry humour mads to contrast the wet and cold weather your having. Keep up the good work

Michael Watson Thank you so much, Michael :) Are you guys actually taxed higher than us? If so and you're ever in Skive I'm sure, I can spare a hot meal ;)

john b Hehe, Thank you :) But I actually misspoke in the video. The guy in the fishing vessel wasn't the neighbor I was talking about. What I should have said was "my future neighbor". In Skive, all the liveaboards move to a particular dock in the winter to be closer to the facilities and closer to each other. I'll properly relocate to that dock in a few weeks. The "neighbor" I was thinking of is already at the liveaboard dock. Sorry :)

Mads, don't feel alone about having to have someone else do the electrical work. While in here in the states, one can be a DIYer on marine electrics, it is not advisable. Insurance companies frown at the very least on installations that are not ABYC certified or code. On Harmony, I have contracted an ABYC Master Technician to do all of the connections to code. Yes, I could run the wiring, but he did the connections. Yes, I had to pay a pretty penny, but I sleep soundly knowing that it is done right and I have a schematic. Anyway, I hope you get a charge out of your new outlets!!! :-) Fair Winds, my friend!

Douglas Tate Thanks, Doug :) Safety and peace of mind is hard to put a price on :) I'm glad to pay the electrician. One thing is for sure. I'm going to enjoy having those outlets down below so much :) There is something incredibly rewarding about doing these tiny projects aboard. Somehow a few outlets seem to make a huge difference :) I have no doubt you're taking excellent care of Harmony. From what you have told me I'm sure she, in return, will take great care of you. If I ever do buy a Westsail 42, I'll consider myself very lucky to find one in half as good a shape as Harmony :) Fair winds, my friend :)

Hi Mads, I enjoy enormously your efforts to add value to your life and subsequently to us and the world. I noticed you mentioned rules, regulations and high taxes (which I'm against) in this video and maybe (even though years have passed) you could make a video about hindering/irrational regulations for the common folks in Denmark. The fact that a certified electrician must approve your own installation tells me that probably their union has pressed the government to push this regulation so as to always get a cut of your own efforts in the end. In other words it's a form of cronyism that increases, unnecessarily, the cost for all, depriving the DIY guy from options that would seem obvious. At the end of the day I refuse to accept the logic in which the unions and the government care more about us than ourselves.

Another cool vid, it seems you've been quite busy. Shame about you having to let someone else do the electrics, make sure they treat Obelix with respect :) .Love the boat and the vids. Keep 'em coming.

Zep Tak Thank you so much :) I would, of course, have preferred to do all of the work myself. At least the electrician I talked to seemed like a very friendly guy. I'm sure he'll do a good job :)

Mads, wiring is in my near future as well. I too am going to set all the boxes, run the conduit, and pull all the wire. Letting the over priced sparky finish up the job. But you are right, better to have the safety than saving $5.00 bucks...lol. I too have a dog, a Dobie, he is 105 pounds and my Albin Vega just isn't that big...lol. This is going to be interesting.

Larry Wills Best of luck on running the wiring. I replaced all of my 12V wiring about eight months ago. Have you done a lot of work on your Vega? I would love to see some pictures :) Wow, 105 pounds is a big dog :) I'm so glad my dog only weighs 18 kg (39.5 pounds) and even at that weight having a gangplank is a big help (I've got some issues with my back).

Another great video! Wow! You have to invite an electrician to do the 230V? Well, at least you know the boat is not going to electrocute anyone aboard or in the water outside. Keep on and enjoy your live-aboard life! :-)
@SailLife

Nikolay Chekan Thank you so much, Nikolay! :) Of course, it's nice to know I won't be electrocuted or that the boat won't catch on fire. And I'm happy to pay the electrician but I do think it's a little bit odd that I'm allowed to do the entire 12V installation myself with almost no regulations. On the other hand, I'm not allowed to hook up the 230V shorepower to a prefabricated fusebox. As long as I get some outlets down below and don't get electrocuted in the process I'm more than happy ;)

Of course you need an electrician to do the work if you want to be safe as well as legal. If you had a fire and it even looked like the cause was electric the insurance company would tell you " sorry you're SOL" Love your posts

Donald McIlmoyle Thank you, Donald! I'm glad you enjoyed the videos :) Isn't it a bit odd that I'm allowed to do the entire 12V installation by myself, but I'm not allowed to hook up a few outlets to a prefabricated fusebox? :) It's basically stripping wire and tightening three screws in the fusebox (and each of the outlets). Sure getting shocked by 230V hurts (and is dangerous) but 12V can easily start a fire. Still, I'm glad to pay the electrician - better safe than sorry :)

Love the video! I enjoy how intelligently you are proceeding on your quest to sail oceans. Question about your cable(s) that you installed. Did you secure them to the bulkhead? Check on rules and regulations concerning the spacing between anchor points. If the cables are allowed to swing loose they will either rub or pull away from your outlets possibly exposing someone to failure or worse, shock. Ask the electrician for guidance. (I am not an electrician!) Last note, I would consider using PVC pipe as a water proof conduit for the cabling. Happy sailing!

Another excellent video thank you. Well you have made the electricians job really easy for him so hopefully you will only get stung for an hours labour. I answered your question about fuel dilution in the comments to video kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXPLlmV_m7V5ha8. Also was wondering if you could help distribute your heat which will collect I a layer at the deck head by using a small fan mounted by the companion way and aimed at the eve berth? Keep up the good work.

Norman Boyes Thank you Norman :) The electrician is stopping by the boat tomorrow. Fingers crossed it won't be too expensive but I'm sure he'll do an excellent job :) I must have missed you comment (I've just replied) - sorry about that! I did experiment with a fan last weekend and it did seem to help a lot. As I mentioned in the video, I'm going to spend a lot of time aboard later this month. Trying to figure out the best location for the fan is high on my todo-list :)

Paul Young The Refleks 66 uses between 0,12 and 0,3 Liters per hour. At some point in the next couple of weeks, I'm going to do a video touching on some of the pros and cons of different solutions (mainly electricity, gas and diesel). Stay tuned :)
