This is very helpful for my Fluid Mechanics class. Thank you.

Thanks for putting out this, good to know what to do when capsizing. Me and my friend have bought and old Snipe and is learning sailing by ourselvess, so good to get some info from the net!

Capsize training, I'm jealous! The first time I did a capsize recovery was alone in an 18 foot dinghy in a level 3 Typhoon. Important lesson: Always check the weather before sailing!

You can adjust your sails in the storm, remove your jib or drop your sails completely.

Oh, now THERE'S something to look forward to lol! I just started Beginning Sailing class at Sac State just as a morale booster to compliment my major classes (Voice & Movement, Design for Theatre, and Directing) and I got told today (first day of class) that we'd be capsizing the boat twice! Per PERSON! So I wasn't even in there for 10 minutes when I started thinking, "Oh shoot, what am I getting myself into???"

As a sailor with over 45 years of experience on both small and larger vessels I would like to mention a few things regarding this video. I respectfully disagree with how these two young ladies were instructed to right this vessel. They were correctly instructed to release the jib and main sheets to free up the sails and that was fine. When it came to actually righting the vessel however you NEVER pull on any sheet. It’s a non-issue on a day where there is no wind but typically boats do NOT capsize on days where there is no wind. A real world test like this one performed in choppy seas and moderate winds could easily result by the vessel flipping over again in the opposite direction once the tight jib caught the wind and cause a dangerous situation for the crew. You would be far better served having the crew work as a team on the centerboard side to right the vessel after releasing the sheets. The advantage is that the crew can see one another and work in concert rather than against each other. It is also very hard to communicate in heavy wind when separated by the vessel. Having spent some time capsizing as a youth and performing similar controlled tests as an adult instructor on numerous small boats I feel responsible to mention this to viewers of this video. There is nothing fun about capsizing especially during rough conditions and everyone should take this very seriously………

@AltaMirage Wrong. Capsize is on a small centerboard boat when the past hits the water, when it completely flips it's called a turtle, a Knock down is when a Keelboat's mast hits the waters and it pops back up again.

happened to me on big waves and wind while sailing solo in Cuba. streched one leg overboard and stepped on the fin. The wind itself went under the main sail and helped with the lift.

Lol Last year I did my first "Dry right" and it was so great, al least until i sacked myself on the edge of the boat XD

actually in self righting boats it is a capsize, a full inversion is known as turtling. (in sailing terminology of course)

keep in mind this is at a class so more than likely this is their first time actually practicing it. so be a good sailor and be nice!

This boat is easy to self-rescue esp with 2 aboard. Some are near impossible. without a motor boat to haul you upright. ' Sooooo, for those of us looking for a self rescue boat, can anyone identify; what model is this boat???

The first time I capsized, I turtled & buried the mast in a foot of mud--what a disaster! Broke the centerboard attempting to right it.

The worst part about getting mud on the mast is having it drip down on you when you get back to sailing.

It looks like someone on the pier was holding mast. Also, lady in the red vest went into the boat from the wrong side. She should swim around and help lady in the blue vest, if needed grab on the centerboard. Terrible training video! Who is is the instructor? a guy who owns the jet-ski shop! ha ha!
