Just some raw video I thought I'd toss up to get things started here. It was a relativity windy day and, though I don't usually get the chance to pull out my camera in these conditions, I managed to capture a full capsize and recovery (as well as them catching a gust and almost rounding up into me).

As a fully-qualified sailing instructor in the UK, we teach our clients that the first step in any capsize would be to get to the back of the boat to ensure safety in case of a total inversion. Despite the boat here starting to invert, the crew remain under it - not a good idea in my experience!!

A mast float is always a good idea. I do sympathise as it is the classic as you get it righted it sails off.

hope your still about, as a novice sailor who has just passed is level 1 RYA for sailing, I have capsized twice on the lake, I couldn't get back in the Pico, I am 17 stone so when wet you could add another 2 stone, I couldn't reach the toe strap, and by the time I sorted the boat out, i was totally exhausted, apart from losing weight, how do I go about getting back onboard.

@@MrWhothefoxthat yes that is a problem. Some climb on the centre board then from there as it is tipping scramble over but you need to be nippy. Some boats don’t have a transom so you climb in the back. Two handed boats you scoop the crew in then they pull you in. One techniqueI have seen is they climb up the inside of the boat with a mast float, then go over onto the edge for the boat and right it and you are still in the boat. It is something to practise with your boat in shallower water. One final though is you should have righting lines that you can pull on to right the boat, that should help you pull yourself into the boat.

As has already been noted, the power boat was way too close to the sailboat -- the skipper should have had the main sheet in his hand at all times. That way, as soon as a gust hits, they can let the main out and re-balance the boat. Because the power boat was too close, they were almost hit when the sailboat rounded up. The sailboat didn't maintain course after that and jibed, causing the boat to be unbalanced -- so it tipped over. They did a good job righting the boat, although note that the crew wasn't able to get the jib under control -- he should have tied the two ends of the jib sheet together, making it easy to grab it and get the sail under control. Good times.

Shouldn’t the crew hold the hiking strap so when its righted he gets pulled into the boat and can help the skipper in

This is exactly the same with the one i sail with my family and it's the exactly same way we capsized it😊. Actually we had total inversion. But as soon as it capsized we both past behind the boat. However people passing with their boats insisted to help us by pulling our boat to the shore. We couldn't persuade them that it could be recovered. They tried to pull our sailboat when it's upside down 😀. Of course they couldn't and we then recovered it by ourselves.

Was the main sheet cleated? Because it looked like the boat was still heeling after they got it righted. And nobody was there for the scoop (when one person rights the boat and the other gets pulled into the boat). We had capsize recovery the other day... my arms still hurt :P We also were working on kinetics so we didn't have a sail or jib and the outhaul and main halyard untied... we had to capsize the boat to fix it.

no. they capsized because they breached sail. watch the video closely. the accidental jibe was so violent that, when the boom flew over, the boat heeled far enough to let the boom hit the water. the underwater fin does not really effect heeling that way. a deep, skinny fin will cause a boat to heel more than a long, shallow fin, while under way, because it's lift is down lower. however, without forward motion, the board doesn't have any 'bite'. it won't stop leeward motion or cause you to trip.

@666devilknight
@666devilknight 11 жыл бұрын
a few points, they almost turned up, into you, because you were much too close to their windward side, considering the wind conditions. pointing up is one way of spilling wind and avoiding capsize. if you were going to motor that close to them, it would have been safer, for all concerned, if you had been on their lee side. it looks like they were sailing by the lee, for a minute or two, just before that accidental jibe took them over. I could be wrong about that, but the boat was heeling...

That wasn't the problem. The problem was the execution of that Jibe (specifically improper weight placement). A quick jibe along with proper weight placement will give you a significant increase in speed (roll jibe).

Wow, way too close with the power boat, already noted by dozens of comments. I actually got T-Boned in a race by a support power boat, completely destroyed my Thistle rail. Never was the same as the repair was junk by a supposed ace repairer. The host club insurance paid out but the boat was ruined, without a complete rail redo, a couple of thousand dollars. The sailors were inexperienced. I would NEVER dive below the surface, that is crazy - be SEEN at all times. Get caught in a line or under a sail, adios. People drown in 4 foot water. With experience, the righting would be more organized, more responsive. With experience the boat wouldn't have gone over. Good training mission if there was some debriefing, but probably not.

Those people got no business being in that boat alone in those winds. XD boat flips over "So, do you wanna like go do the mast or like should I..." makes me wanna pull my hair out. It's like dude! if you can't get over the top have which ever one's closer (which is almost always the skipper) swim around to the center board as fast as you can.

As a sailing coach, I have two comments. #1 the boat was overweight, each guy looked close to 200 pounds. These boats should have no more than 340 pounds combined crew weight but the competitive weight would be 300 or less combined crew weight. #2 This was probably the guy in the blue PFD's first day and the black PFD guy looked to be teaching him to a certain extent but looked very novice as well. I would have put a lighter more experienced person onboard to assist the learning curve. None-the-less, all in good fun if nobody gets hurt.
