Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

If the sails are in any way accurate with reality in trailmakers, a good sailboat should weigh around 1.5-3 tons (small and medium sized sailboats) and the best wind for sailing is around 30km/h. In conditions of higher wind speed, only the larger sailboats sail or if smaller, they're not on the full sail span.

Sailboats move fastest when they travel perpendicular to the wind, and a well designed sailboat can travel faster than the wind this way. This is true in real life and in trailmakers. The trick is transferring the perpendicular force of the wind into forward motion by properly angling the sails and not tipping over. In trailmakers this is much easier to accomplish with wide outriggers and lots of shallow fins under the water rather than a deep keel and weight blocks. I was able to build a 0-core sailboat that can travel 50mph perpendicular to the 32mph wind with this method.

the sailing boat at 0:40 is only meant for regions with little wind. Its mainly built for maps without wind at all, thats also why its powered with engines :)

how is the compass helpful?

@@Floekes you can use it for assisted steering that keeps the vehicle always pointed in one cardinal direction, and it cannot naturally rotate on its own

You need to lower the sails right when they go slack, and then put them up when they are fully swung into position. That maintains your forward momentum.

I've been on a sail boat once... It was terrifying. The boat was at like a 45° angle to the water and i was just mostly worried about dropping my phone. Then on our way back I got stuck in the bathroom because the door was jammed. I managed to get out but it was weird being able to feel the rock of the boat.

I've made a few thruster assisted hydrofoils in Trailmakers, doesn't use sails though. My best one goes 60 km/h normally and about 300 km/h when "hydrofoiling".

When sailboats go faster than wind they angle the sails so they form a wing and lift force is generated in the direction the boat is moving. That’s why moving directly into the wind is not the fastest way to move.

Yeah but air pressure/lift is not simulated in the game. Well, it's simulated for plane wings, but i don't think it is for sails.

This is kinda hard to explain but as a person who sails sailboats I can tell you that sailing with the wind is not the fastest

From what I can tell a wider sail boat is a lot better than a heavy counter weight at least for flipping over I think the best Sali boat would have a wide base lager not taller sails and a cool red and black paint job.

Multiplayer Monday suggestion: Trailmakers Dethrone using Workshop creations that are hidden or randomly selected for each person. Explanation: I have 5 land vehicles on the Workshop that are all "boxed" to look identical except for a number. You could have everyone choose a box one at a time or have them randomly assigned to each person. You could also do this by each selecting a creation, boxing it and then having at least 2 people shuffle the boxes so that no one knows which is which

I think you should have given the first boat a longer chance. It was tiny, but it seemed to be pretty good, and you switched off of it before actually giving it a proper chance.

I built my first sail boat and I think it works great! It looks amazing and has a pirate ship astatic, it works side ways to the wind and goes 45 KPH just with sails

Could you try tacking by using two sails, one for when the wind is on the right and another for the left? So as you tack you collapse one sail (should prevent the reversing)

I do a setup like you would for angle sensors in automatic roll, but adjust it with servos and use the output for automatic steering.

I've been sailing as a representative of the Australian navy cadets in small corsair types even solo sailing try a run have the jib (front sail) all the way to the left) and the main sail all the way to the right with the wind directly behind one of the fastest ways to sail

45 degree Angle of Attack is the number. It has something to do with creating pressure difference due to curved surface (lift, coanda effect) of the sail interacting with the wind

I feel like sailing is difficult in trailmakers because there is no physical feedback that you would get from the lines on an actual sailboat. (I sail lasers myself, which if you don’t know what that is, it’s the men’s Olympic single hander.)

If you have too many sails and not enough keel, youll flip over (only for single haul). If your sails are large you need to compensate for a large or larger keel.

My sailboat maintains balance by hiking the character over the side. I can sail into the wind with just sails. Have only done one successful tack. It always stalls and then I have to backup and turn to complete the tack.
