Paid $17K Can 8mo ago for a 1968 Cutter rigged Hughes 38. Prolly paid about 8 or 9 K too much, but it is the boat I have wanted since the early 80's. It was built while Knox Johnson was on his record breaking trip and after I turn 65 next year I would like to try and beat his 312 days sailing out of Victoria B.C.

Super interesting episode. Being a 30 year yacht broker, I'm so in love with off brands that people don't know of. Sold a Finncraft recently a Swan not a Swan. Jonmeri, Arcona, Maestro, Najad. Sure not cheap but crazy build quality. Shout out to the Islander comment, love most vintage Ericson as well. Just recently sold a C&C 41 my Chicago Mac ride. Pretty much my favorite C&C design but I'm an old school Mid 80s IOR racer. The Hunters always had nice designs but always question the build quality.. Nice episode.

Back to the video question. Probably a little smaller than what others would look at but I seem to be stuck on the Cape Dory 28s & 30s which were built into the '80s. Lots of people would go for a more modern design but I like the simplicity of the boat and it is built like an anvil.

I would love it if you could talk about tiny ocean passage making boats. "Budget Boats", so to speak, are my only option. Things like the Albin 27, Flicka 20, Contessa 26, and the like. Small liveaboards that travel the world with deep keels. I know you have already talked a lot about these under different brand videos though. Oh, and perhaps mention how the boat market changes per country/continent. I love listening into your channel, but unfortunately as I currently live in the U.K., my options are a bit different on the market. More westerlys and less island packets. Both videos would be very interesting to me and any other overseas budget sailors!

Soft decks are the number 1 issue, engine issues would be number 2. In 35 years I saw one Yanmar failure, a few Volvo's and a couple of Atomic 4's. A strong diesel and a solid deck are worth a lot!

If you think about it for 2 people to holiday somewhere dreamy twice in two years you could by a $20K sailboat for around the same price and have endless dreams👏

The pain of "you get what you pay for" is to the extreme with cheap or bargain boats. While every boat owner should be a part-time mechanic/plumber/electrician/..., but with these boats you really should be a super capable person with doctorate degree! (i'm not!) ... Another thing to consider is the cost of docking and storage ratio to the cost of the boat. Marina fees are the same for $500k boats and 5k boats of same size! ... marina fees are really going up, lack of space, new demand and inflation are pushing rates up by 20-40% ... If you can only afford a cheap boat, can you continuously afford the marina fees on top of the deep refit costs? you will most likely be docked or on the hard for a long time until you're safe to sail again. My suggestion is to charter to enjoy the sport and gain experience, save money and keep an eye out for gems

Best reply. Caveat emptor with boats. If you dream of sailing, buy the best condition boat you can afford, if you like to fix things, still buy the best boat you can afford. Boats are not built to car standards. This means endless maintenance, and constant outlay of money and time. You have to be extremely realistic about boats. The smallest leak can take you hours of time to fix. Do you have that time or interest? The ratio of fun time to work time on a cheap boat is heavily in favour of work not fun.

I am in the middle of this. I knew better, but like all of my other projects I feel a draw to making something great out of something that was neglected and still has good bones. I don't have the time, usually. I bought a 1969 Morgan 38 (Charley Morgan) for $6K USD. It has a running Kubota 35hp, and I was able to get her sailing... but we are in one of the most hypersaline environments in the world and it is hard to keep up. I know enough to be dangerous, but Im learning ;) At 52 I should have followed my head and other's advice and just got something a little farther along. If I can get it to stop raining inside the boat that will be a big step forward.

We all love the look of teak, but it only looks good for a short time unless you can devote your life to varnishing it. The best remedy for old teak trim is to paint it. 12:20 But first kill the mold, as teak is resistant to rot, but loves mold. It looks great painted an accent color. If you buy a boat with a teak deck, be prepared to rip it off, fill the fastener holes and paint. Best advice-learn to paint with a roller and brush (can’t spray in a marina), use the very sun resistant 3M silver tape and stay away from any two part paint that is difficult to sand because using it doesn’t mean you’ll never have to paint again and it may be difficult to sand.

Picked up my '81 C&C 35 Landfall for ~$15k in 2020 with a10 year old yanmar. Don't get me wrong, it's got it's share of 'old boat' issues, but this market makes me feel like I got quite a deal.

I agree with you on Islander. I have what the documents say is a 37, not a 36 (1969). Amazing boat. Problem i have is it was dismasted. Finding a replacement without corresponding specs is not fun. Pushing on. One solid, amiable hull. Love it.

As I like ocean sailing, I have always loved the Islander 36. Find one with a good diesel and rig. No major structural issues and you could circumnavigate properly outfitted. I knew a guy that was rounding Point Conception on the N ca coast and got caught out in bad stuff. Bad stuff there was really bad. He went mast in the water once and full capsize once. Ended up with lost Bimini and bent stanchions. The boat was still usable. He limped into Morro Bay where I met him. I was there on my Cal 2-46 waiting for weather. They sail well and I love there interior. My last boat was a Tartan 37 CB. Loved it! Just recently sold it a year and a half ago. Sand S design a sweet boat. Very well behaved on all points of sail. Super well balanced.

I just bought a 36 ft islander today. I researched it saw that they were valued between 15 and 30000$the owner was asking 15000 he had a recent above water survey that valuable between 15 and 17000$the boat is well equipped set up for solo crusing. after the sea trial I decided I was just going to pay him the 15000 and not even try and push him down. So that being said I'm glad you did this video and talked about The islander history. It's good to hear that there's a network of islander owners that are willing to help so with information thanks for all your videos❤🎉

I've been thinking about a 26ft Macgregor as my entry to sailing. That would avoid the docking fees in summer and storage in winter. There may be enough anchorages in the Lake Erie/Lake St Clair area that I can spend summer weekends on the water and still keep the boat in my driveway during the week. It also seems foolproof to learn on. You can't capsize it and you can't sink it.

The issue I have with these older boats is the OAL is what you pay for when you hit a dock/marina/or pulling it out. They all charge based on OAL. The length at the water line is your livable area on a boat. So you pay the dock fees of a 34ft boat but only have the room inside of a 28ft boat.

My in-laws sailed an Islander 28 from San Diego to Costa Rica. Health issues forced them to return to the States. My father-in-law sailed the boat back up North as far as La Paz and had to leave it there.

There's more in northern Europe, but then one should sail to the med and that's a bit too much for me to do..

The main issue with boats built after the OPEC crisis of the '70s is fiberglass quality issues, particularly, osmosis. My 1969 Alberg 30 has an amazingly thick hull, is rock solid and has never had any sign of osmosis.

A year ago i thought 20k was unreal for a 35 year old boat. After sailing my 22 and doing some overnights i can comfortably justify 40k for a vessel. comfort is king and the money up front for a better kept vessel means i have more time under sail and not doing maintenance to keep a cheaper vessel going. Keep the heavy side down. But not too far down

If you consider that any used boat you find will probably need a lot of work, if it is a budget based boat. You can spend more $ on a poorly maintained 2000's model boat than you will on a well maintained 70's or 80's boat.

Great video. C&C is great but I’ll never have one again because of keel bolt issues. Gotta watch out for keel bolts Solid = Pearson, Allied, Ericson, Westsail to an extent, some Newport’s, a few islanders with encapsulated keels like the 32, Gulfstar, Cal, some Columbias, and a few others that have encapsulated lead keels, a keel stepped mast, full keel or atleast on a skeg hung rudder and overall solid build quality and design from the beginning Not so = Hunter, Catalina, Beneteau, Jenneau, Dufour, Irwin, Endeavour, keel bolt Columbia, Taiwanese boats with iron keels aaaaand keel bolts plus iron tanks and steel beams and so on. I could go on and on but the idea is to get a boat that was thought out and then executed properly down to the last build technique and process. Great vidoe. Great topic.

i would be glad you go back to Trimaran - open water... they are fast, the motion is not necessarly the best. but they are fast, and it's like a porsche on the ocean. they are foldable. but what is great, what is not? they have different interiors. Farrier is the best? or a Corsair? I would like it if you could talk about keels. I just retired. I have a 26’ Keel/centre board trailersailor and would like a shallow draft ( 5’ or less) 35’ - 40’ to do the ICW / Bahamas in winter. I have looked at twin keel boats but, most of them are in europe and expensive. I would consider a centre board such as a Tanzer 10.5 or a Southerly 110/115 but, I don’t know how reliable they are. I don’t know why there aren’t more deck salon / wheel house yachts in North America. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I think what you want is a modified fin or really any "shoal" boat. Hunter makes a few, Lady K is one as 5'5" all in for depth (she's a Hughes 35), but anything shoal version should be easy to find on the East coast

What about a clapped out Nicholson 38? I know one that’s offered at $12,000 CDN on Craigslist. Looks like it needs new cushions, it comes with sails (how bad do they have to be to not work at all?) and a recent engine overhaul..? It was converted from a ketch to a sloop rig to simplify single handing. Comes with inflatable dinghy.

I know they’re “only” 30 footers, but I’d buy a Pearson 303 before I’d buy any of the other boats listed in this video. For $20,000 you can find a 303 in great shape with a solid fiberglass hull, a skeg hung rudder, an encapsulated lead keel and more room below deck than a 30 foot yacht has any right to have… and a tick under 11,000 pound displacement makes the 303 an ideal “first boat” coastal cruiser for two people, which is what you’re going to have most of the time anyway…

Check out the scandanavian markets in particular, daughter bought a Vega for £1700 earlier this year and we sailed her back to scotland. Right now there are a few Vindo 32's for less than £20k but you can get a very capable boat in northern europe for less than 10k.

Hi, for those of us just getting into cruising we appreciate all the knowledge you give. Do you think you could do something about sails? Are sails standard sizes or does every make need a specific size or type? Can you buy used sails or have to order them custom? No one really addresses this. If you could mention something about this it would be great because when I look at used boats I don't know if replacing a sail is a custom thing or off the shelf. Thanks.

Hello I could really use an opinion, I feel a little uncomfortable since looking in my area I found 2 boats both are 30 footers amongst them a cnc mark 2 (28 feet and some actually). Early 80s, valid engine and sails but nothing else (well chartplotter and instruments are kind of working). It feels pretty small I can barely fit in the v berth. Its under 20k canadian, I think it wouldnt need repairs right away, is lacking any kind of equipment for heating and such. I get it, it just depends how much I'm willing to cut on comfort. Since I am a newer boater, should I bite the bullet or try to get more room and more amneties for the 20k? There is also a grampian 30 available, it feels a little bit larger and includes some solar, but its 10 years older and using a gas engine.

You're asking a lot a lot for a boat in this price range. Heat or hot water and big luxuries for sure. Don't expect any of that. And roominess didn't happen until the mid 90s. Lower your expectations or raise your budget buy a lot. Sorry. Look at hunter 375. It's exactly what you want. But expect 80-90k.

The Cape Dorys are definitely built better than Cheoy Lees, although the Dorys are somewhat old school and don't have a lot of room inside - but also have a better resale. I examined a Perry designed Choey Lee 48 a few years ago and discovered the boat was made entirely of matt - no roving except a V piece around the skeg. Makes me wonder what else CL has done.... (I have three decades building/repairing boats)

You likely wouldn't be paying me enough so that would be the only reason for me to come. Someone around to learn hands on knowledge from would be the biggest draw for me. Would 4 weeks there work for you and would be hard to find a place to sleep. I could jump in the water to wash and live off of boiled eggs and salad mixes, oatmeal etc. I'll bring a butane burner. Let me know your parameters for what your looking for and I'll see if I can confirm. Maybe August or later?

I live in Florida and would never own a C and C or Hunter because of the spade rudders. Would have liked to hear about Pearson 35's or Allmands. Even Cape Dorys. I have a hard time understanding why spade rudders are even made.

Sorry, I have to adamantly disagree with the C&C. Let me say that I LOVE C&C's - we had a C&C 33 growing up which proved to be a good cruiser that also brought home the silver. Unfortunately, C&C lost me when they started adding balsa core to their HULLS. If water ever gets in there, just throw the boat away. Think how difficult/expensive it is to repair rotted balsa core decks and multiple that by 10 when trying to fix the hull. Fiberglass is not waterproof, and having wood sandwiched in the hull in areas underwater 100% of the time is not one of their better ideas. I was originally in the market to buy a C&C 34, 35 or 36, however I ended up buying a used Pearson 36. Definitely have some work to do on it but I thought it was a better choice in the end.

I'm biased because I recently bought a Morgan 38. The version that was produced from 1969 to 1971. The owner started at $25k, and he had done a ton of work to it, but he made the mistake of not painting the outside so it didn't show well. We got it for $10k in the winter. Once we haul and paint it, I'm sure we could get $20k or more. He did a bunch of structural work and also rebuilt the cabin. We are dealing with some deck leaks, the drop board has an occasional clunk which we'll need to suss out and the sails, while adequate for cruising, are not cutting it for the weekly races in which we participate. Don't want to spend $7k on new ones so we'll probably try to find some used ones in really great shape. Would love to see a story on Morgan boats in general (and of course the more similar to our Charlie Morgan 38 the better). But there were just 75 of our model produced (I have hull number 75) so I'm guessing a show on Morgans in general would be our best case.

Hey, Roy, where are you located? I bought one for $6K a couple years ago. I am hull number 21. My dock mate had one, as well. He and his GF are now in Veracruz, MX on the way to Isla Mujeres. I just got mine out for her first sail after I started rehabbing her. She is not pretty (outside of the awesome lines - paint is awful), and leaky, too. Good Kubota 35 repower, serviceable sails, good rigging. I would be interested in swapping stories and ideas. My boat has been in this area for many years and some locals know some of the history which is pretty cool. She has been around (literally). I am in South Texas. I'm on the largest hypersaline lagoon on the planet so rusting is a real problem.

@@BriceCave Hi Bruce. Very cool. Would be happy to share notes. Mine is in Bellingham, Washington -- 30 nautical miles from the Canadian border. I own it with a friend. I should say that my wife and I own half and my friend owns the other half. He's really good with repairs; there's no way I'd have taken this on by myself. We haul out in a couple of weeks to look at and repaint the underside. We're thinking about trying to fabricate a redesigned rudder that would drop down together with the center board, have more surface area running toward the stern and also create space for a folding prop. Our challenge so far has been steering in light wind. Steers fine under power and when sailing with winds around 10 knots (even a bit lower). But when it calms to 5, we have zero steering. Steering in reverse is just plain silly. Another Morgan owner said it was like tying to maneuver a drunken elephant in reverse. But I've learned how to maneuver by just using the prop wash. A judicious use of forward, neutral and reverse with prop wash makes it easy to spin in place. The boat was refitted in 2008 with a Swedish diesel with 45 hp (I believe). It's got 4,000 hours. Seems like a high quality engine but it's damn hard to get parts. Most of all because the manufacturer isn't willing to send them to the U.S. in the aftermath of Covid. An electric sailboat is a great solution for world cruising. I converted to electric. Have doubts? watch Uma or the Rigging Doctor. You don't need a motor to ride the trade winds. Regardless, electric isn't everyone's cup of tea and that's fine. Some people don't want to go slow and just want to motor 40 nautical miles to the next port and I'm not bagging on them because that's valid, but it's just as valid to sail your boat everywhere, treating it like an engineless sailboat but have a motor to go short distances...like >20 nautical miles.

I don't know if anyone knows more about electric power than Uma. 😊 I think they installed/uninstalled their motor three times (maybe more) before they nailed it. Love their channel.
