Sailboat Mast Inspection - Lubricating Screws & What's This Brush Thing?

No sailor wants to experience a demasting. Make sure to complete a sailboat mast inspection, as part of your overall rigging inspection, at least once a year. A part of our mast maintenance is to lubricate our screws at the top of the mast so this video showcases what's involved. And discover what's at the top of a sailboat mast. Those static wicks actually increase the chance that your boat is the boat in the marina that gets hit because they increase the surface area releasing electrons into the air above your boat. Don't get me wrong I'm not telling you to stop, I'm just here to thank you for your sacrifice!

Nope you are misinformed, those things disperse the ions and make the mast a larger target. This results in less chance of getting hit directly.

Your comments are interesting. We've been next to three boats, over the course of several years, that got hit with lightening. All the boats had lower masts, no lightening protection, and we didn't get hit. The common theme was that they were all catamarans. I have researched this at length. Catamarans are 5x more likely to get hit than Mono's so our strategy is to anchor near Cats...I'm not sure if the brush things work or not? We've been in lightening, alone, many times and so far so good. Simon

@@Sailingbritican Yup, cats have a much larger surface area to draw electrons from the earth, and only one mast to focus the voltage drop: the larger the voltage drop the better chance of getting hit. This is why America uses 110v rather than 220v because 220v is far more likely to arc, even though it's safer when it does because the amps are halved. Potatoes/potatoes...
