Thanks for this! Leaving Maine in a few weeks on my new boat and headed south, nice to see what I'm in store for.

I wonder how far south you are heading ... maybe our paths cross. We are sailing south end October.

@@SailCloudyBay I'm headed down to the Keys for winter, sitting at the end of the Cape Cod Canal right now and heading to Newport in the AM. I'm not sure if I'm tucking up into the Delaware and taking the canal to the Chesapeake yet or just making the ocean hop to Newport. I'll most likely be alone and with new boat and new to open ocean sailing I'll have to wait for a really good weather window. I'm in a white Hans Christian 33 currently named Distant Drummer out of Brunswick ME until my documentation goes through.

This time of year I would opt to hop down the coast rather than out in the Ocean. Down back of Long island. Through East River (very nice experience ... but make sure you hit Devils gate at slack tide). Have a night tucked in behind Sandy Hook Bay then down NJ coast and into Cape May (lovely place) Then up Delaware, through canal and down Chesapeak and wait in Southern Chesapeake for a window to get around the Hatteras and into Beaufort (or anchor behind Cape Lookout lighthouse). Then hop to Florida. Or .... as a single hander, maybe safer in the Ocean where there is less to hit while you take naps. But you will be victim to all the low pressure systems that roll off the east coast from now on .... If you do Cheasapeake you could attend the Sail Boat show in Annapolis. 12-15 Oct. We'll look out for you.
@christianriedel70173 жыл бұрын
@@SailCloudyBay that was my plan except to stay in the ICW from Norfolk. Currently sitting in Port Washington waiting for the weather from Sam (I'm assuming) to move through and make the hop down to Atlantic City then Cape May. Hoping I can make it to Annapolis in time for the boat show. 🤞🏻

Welcome board Chris. Wonder how your binge viewing went? Most to come in the future, once we get sailing again. In the meantime there will be a few maintenance videos posted

@@SailCloudyBay Thanks so much. Happy to be aboard. Binging went....swimmingly. I really do love how much of your videos are pure sailing. Everything from adjusting the lines slightly to shining "brass". All things to keep her sailing true and looking top notch. The technical insight on navigation is nice too. It's fun to watch and even more to learn. Fair winds and following seas!

It's been fun watching you sail through Long Island, I have been boating there for many years. Kind of neat seeing it through someone else's eyes. Going down the west side of Roosevelt Island is easier, you can avoid that lift bridge altogether and there is less shoaling and fewer rocks to worry about.
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the Long Island Sound videos. For us, this cruising ground was the best on the east coast and we wished we hadn't run out of time. As for the Roosevelt island, we could not go down the West (normal) side as it was shut off due to UN security council meeting in session (LOL .... like we were a threat :) )

Thanks for visiting our little part of the world. Just to mention a few highlites you've missed: the cement ship from WWl. Sunk just off the point. The lobster house. (A must stop restaurant where you had drinks.) And the cape may diamonds (you find on the beach.)

Nice job managing your position ahead of the Roosevelt bridge in that current.
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
It was indeed tricky. Especially when the bridge was not ready for us and we had to turn around into the current. I made the turn and thought: "OK, we are making headway", then glanced at the river bank to see that we were actually going backwards towards the unopened bridge! Dont think my hand ever went that fast to the throttle!

I'm not sure why you went to the east of Roosevelt Island and made the bridge rise, when if you took the western side there was no waiting for a bridge.
@SailCloudyBay2 жыл бұрын
Normal rout was closed due to UN Security Council meeting. Otherwise no way would we have gone that side.
@en85816 жыл бұрын
Great video. I have passed Manhattan several times but always went along the west side of Roosevelt Island avoiding that rising bridge. I am curious why you needed to go along the east side of Roosevelt Island?
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
Good question. There we a UN security Council session being held at the UN HQ, so they had closed off the western passage passed Roosevelt. In the morning they had closed off the entire river while the heads of state were traveling to the UN building.

Good job! I know how exhausting it is to steer through 6 Knots of tidal current in a narrow sound. In a river with boat traffic around, you need to be 110 % consentrated.
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
I was indeed quite tense until we were finally through that bridge. Normally we would pass on the West side of Roosevelt island, but because of a United Nations security council meeting, with all the world leaders at the UN, they had shut off that route on the east river.
@steenkigerrider53406 жыл бұрын
Do you happen to know what the maximum air draught is for the bridges you passed from Loung Island Sound up to Manhattan?
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
If you take the normal western route passed Roosevelt island, I believe the clearance you need is 135ft, for all bridges.
