Love your videos. I also love the way you set up your boat. I noticed you never use your stay sail. Any particular reason?

Glad you enjoy the videos Jim. The staysail on HRs are not designed to be set along with the genoa - they both run on the same sheeting track. Its really designed as a high wind sail to use after you get to the 2nd dot on the genoa furling. So, upwind we would put it out (and genoa away) around 18kts true wind. Off the wind about 25kts true. Any less wind than that and it doesnt have the pull needed through the waves. At the same time, we reef the main to the same height and strengthen the mast using the runners. In our recent video, Bermuda to Antigua, we did have it out. Also several of the interisland videos earlier this year. It can actually be set quite successfully with the genoa when off the wind but frankly the main rig is so big (too big for a cruising yacht really) that we dont actually need that extra sail area.

Could anyone tell me how far upstream the Delaware River is navigable for say.. a Catalina 34? Or what resource of maps can you use to figure that out? 🙏

Blimey! This old Tar has been on the dry for way too long1 It just slapped me up side the head after 53 videos. She has a loose footed mainsail. When did they invent that? Back in '58 the first boat I sailed on at age ten had a Club Footed Jib of all things. Our next sailboat in '68 was a big step to loose footed headsail. OH, and when did they cut a trench from the Delaware to the Chessey Bay?

Yes Steve, loose footed, which it has to be to allow it to furl into the mast. You lose a bit of power this way (air pressure escapes between mast and boom) but also much easier to get a very nice shape to the sail off the wind, where I try to match the camber (curvature) of the main to that of the genoa.
