Actually if you watch the video at some point I show the anemometer screen which shows 50+ knots true wind at a random moment and have registered up to 60 knots. On camera it always looks more calm than in reality^^ in any case it's really not a contest.

@@sailsofavalon6482 Yea I agree it is actually very frustrating taking a camera out during heavy weather, suffering the hell on the boat, then when showing this to other people they cannot even imagine what is was like, the footage "dampen" much of the wind ferocity and waves are much smaller (if that make sense) then felt in real life. Then some gonzo come and say, hey this was'nt as bad as you are telling me... like I did in my previous post lol ! Cheers.

Actually skippered this boat when it lived in San Diego c1994 for about a year. Good to see it out and about. The owner did virtually nothing with the boat at that time therefore I left!

anemometer in the video says otherwise, the whole video is not 60 knots, it's a compilation of several days of sailing with one day where we hit the 60s. some days we indeed got only 15 to 20! the sea always seem much calmer in videos in any case

Maybe gusting true wind 60knt but she’s sailing downwind and so likely seeing 40-45 apparent most of the time. Hence the 3rd reef and small jib. Also this is one of the old S&S 57s, i.e. with a long keel - and so really hard work on the helm in a quartering sea.

Well it shows it gusting 50 in the video, add a bit of apparent wind and it could be close. More like a consistent 40-45 though.

@@ceirwan When a sailor talks of sailing in 60 knots, they mean sustained periods where the true wind (not the apparent) is at least 60 knots. This may mean gusts to 90, but certainly 75 knots.

On video wind and wave conditions always seem more calm than they are in reality, that is why we filmed the anemometer at some point showing 51 knots at a random moment. As it says in the description you are quite right it is not a sustain 60knots wind but several days of sailing with different wind condition and one day where it reached up to 60 knots

60 knots? Not even in apparent... I sailed Flyer over 20,000 ocean miles and know what 45 Kts. true look like from that deck,and 15.7 Kts. over the ground surfing honest 18 footers! But it does look like a grand old sail and the old girl still has it,Bravo!

Not in apparent indeed because we were running downwind, the true wind speed (TWS) indicated by the anemometer display in the video reached 60 knots a few times. thank you!

No way is that 60 knots (or nearly 70 mph). You would not have those sails up (even reefed) and you'd be much more healed over. This is more like 30-35 knots, which is still a strong wind. If it was 60 knots (as your title clearly states), you'd have a pocket hankerchief of a sail or you would be hove to. Maybe you had a brief gust, but as shown this is nowhere near the wind speed your title suggests. So bad marks for click bait. Also those waves would be twice the ferocity and height if it was 60 knots.

Hi, the whole video is not with 60 knots wind it was shot on several days, one day we indeed had up to 60knots. check at 2:23 where you can see the anemometer screen indicate a true wind speed of 51 knots (TWS). This was shot at a random time and we had the anemometer indicate 60 knots a couple of times. Looks can be deceiving on camera. The Swan 57 is a heavy boat and we were sailing downwind, this is why we could carry the mainsail reefed all the way and the storm jib on an inner forestay

That is about 25 knots ... perhaps 30. At 60 knots you won't have much sail up and the knuckles will be white, as well as the sea.
