COVID19 forces us to rethink and change our sailing plans. After a month of isolating during The Bahama's mandated lockdown orders, we finally head back out to sea. While moving our sailboat to the next destination, we cross paths with a tropical storm that no one predicted until it was too late. We sail to our nearest bailout spot, nearly 90 nautical miles away.

You know, at the time that storm really freaked me out. But it’s true, the more you go out, and the more different experiences you gather sailing, the more skilled and comfortable you become. It’s awesome to hear people say how they’ve liked seeing us improve. On a personal level, I’m even happy to have these videos for the same reason. Now we look forward to that ocean sailing more than ever! -Mandi

Oh dang cruise ships. That brings back memories. We were supposed to board a cruise ship just as COVID broke out and everything shut down. The whole family was literally driving to the coast to board the ship when they cancelled and we had to turn around. Looking back, that was the best thing that could have happened to us. The vessel that left just hours before us was not allowed to make port at any of their destinations.

Great video! I think you should set up a preventer line for your boom. If you should have an accidental jibe, it will save your rigging etc. from getting slamed around during the uncommanded jibe. (downwind) Why do you think they call it accidental? Better to protect yourselves and your rigging equipment from damage, before it happens, than have to jury rig a traveler and other rigging. Duke

That is not a yellowfin tuna nor is it a "poor baby." That is a blackfin tuna and good eating. Entry into the Bahamas comes with a fishing permit so if you were still in Bahamas water or international waters you could legally keep it. For just the two of you, that tuna was just the right size.

@@TakeTheWaters It's a paraphrase from a quote for pilots. I asked my friend about it and he said that with more experience handling poor conditions, some develop an attitude that there is nothing they cannot fly through. The joker in the deck is Mother Nature, especially at sea, as you discovered. Technology is great; it is also wrong, and things can change in a heartbeat. Be safe out there. Trust YOU over technology.

Hi guys, just noticed your forestay has quite a bit of sag in it. A huge performance gain would be to swap out the backstay turnbuckle with a small hydraulic ram. It will improve your upwind speeds because you will be able to tighten it in heavy air (pulls the sail shape draft forward) & ease it to get the sag back in light air. A cheap way to get speed & that means sailing more safely.
@TakeTheWaters

ahh, I've been looking at racing boats in Annapolis that have the ability to shape the rigging, and wonders how exactly it helps. Maybe we'll look at this down the road. For now I really want to install a whisker pole but they're expensive. so we'll see. -Brian
@chrispomfret8592
@chrispomfret8592 3 жыл бұрын
Take the Waters No problems. A whisker pole is great but if you’ve already got a spinnaker pole run with that. Ideally your mast has a track on the front of the mast so you can get the butt end of the pole at the right height. Adjustable means it works for both headsails and spinnakers. Some wisker poles don’t use topping lifts or kickers. This is a waste of time in my opinion as you can’t set the sail shape the way you want it. It helps to wing a headsail out then lift the clew slightly so that the leech bellows more. It will set better & means it is less likely to want to backwind from the leach first and gybe. So maybe spend your money on a proper pole. Sure it’s a bit more bulky but look to how racing yachts store their poles. Don’t do the storage up the mast like lots of cruisers do. That does not make any sense at all. In regards to forestay sag. The problem with heavy furling gear is the tension on the forestay. Each time it sags the leach tension on the headsail gets tighter & it causes wind to go onto the under side of the main. It’s known as closing the slot. That means the whole balance of the boat is compromised. To solve it you have to sheet more outboard on the headsail which means you can’t sail as close to the wind which means a bumpier ride over waves, which means you reef or reduce sail too early. First action to deposed a sail should always be to increase halyard tension, cunningham or forestay tension. Your in mast furling main means you are limited to improving its sail shape so the first and only step is to improve your forestay tension through a backstay ram. Look at the hand pump ones from Sheldon. Enjoy.

Hi Brian & Mandi. Loving your vids and following your voyages very loyally! You guys have positive energy together and I enjoy your humor. I have one minor piece of (constructive) criticism: For myself as a landlubber, the videos of your travels would be SO VERY MUCH improved if the viewer was able to see a recognizable piece of the world map and where you can plot your origin, destination and progress EVERY TIME? In this vid at least, i found that piece of information was missing?. I am referring to a similar animation which you can find in Hollywood movies such as: Raiders of The Lost Ark for example? Remember: Your viewer public is located world-wide: many of the viewers may not even have an idea of the relative locations of places such as: The Bahamas, Cape Canaveral and Charleston for example. These oceans are just endlessly stretching into the horizons on your vids (my compliments for the High Quality in resolution, sound and editing work of those, by the way) and are all just similar for us viewers at home. We have totaly NO clue whatsoever of what is: North, South, East or West. In other words: we have no sense of your positions or the voyage. That kind of recommended mapping/tracking can really give an improved sense of feeling to the viewers re. the voyages that you’re undertaking. Keep up the good work and safe travels!
@TakeTheWaters
@TakeTheWaters 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! We really appreciate the feedback for the map. I put a map on the Bahamas Bound video, but the issue I kept having was these NOAA maps are so big they crash my editing software. When you size them down, you can’t read them, and then any other smaller map formats I don’t have copyright licensing for. I tried making it for this video, but my computer crashed 4 times before I finally gave up. With that said, I’m going to go the google earth route, which is copyright free if I include their watermark, so I’m going to learn that this week and add to the next video. We agree with you 100%, you need to have context of where we’re at. It pained me to put this video out without having the map. Thanks again! -Brian
