I really enjoyed your video and always look forward to them. You would not think it but during the First World War Folkestone Harbour was the main port of departure for soldiers and medical personnel. 10 million soldiers left from the harbour wall you were on and 1 million Red Cross workers and it was known as the ‘gateway to the trenches’.

You saw the Shieldhall! That's a preserved Clyde steamer that is a fixture on the Solent. Twin triple-expansion steam engines. It's a lovely ship. Not as old as you might think; just built old-style in the 50s. It was in the movie _Angelas Ashes_

sully biker is correct and the yellow funnelled ship was the sheildhall. She was used on the clyde to remove sewage out to sea . Southampton then purchased her to do the same job and dump sewage out at sea. She is now used for charters and has been completly renovated and even has a cafe. Twotube was also correct that they saw the waverley steam paddle ship. She had the red funnel and was in the solent area at the beginning of september.

I use the fuel pump bulb you squeeze that mounts on the fuel tank. works great for priming the line and you leave it in the line. Just like on an out board

Someone installed one on the inverter generator that was at our town's dump. It uses a pulse fuel pump like lawn tractors use that have under seat fuel tanks which had failed but I left the primer bulb as a back up with a set of pliers taped to the access cover. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Motor sounds much better. That was my issue, a small leak in the suction side between the tank and the pump. It was really annoying. Racors are great, I like the nalgene idea. Thanks for the video man, fair winds and following seas...

ahh , Folkestone , My home sailing port for 18 years , quite a lot of history around this harbour , the building upon high at 21;15 was once connected to the German embassy , the arched bridge you crossed with a now defunct swing bridge once was a double track onto folkestone pier which had ferry service to france and many years ago the Netherlands . The fishing quarter you walked through has been connected wish the industry for many years , but now though surviving is very much a shadow of its former self .

in the bay there's a chair lift up to the top of the cliffs. You can also make a bottle full of different coloured sands up there.. Also the cliffs you zoomed in on with the light houses is Beachy Head

I’ve had my Pacific Seacraft 34 for 25 years and I never knew that check valve was there. And my engine does lose its prime on the fuel supply so this will help - I just ordered a seal kit to take with me. 1:43

I couldn't help but notice the single blade for the wind turbine being shipped on that small freighter burning diesel fuel. Now considering that most turbines have three blades, that means three of those trips, plus the other ships &/or big transport trucks required to get the rest of the parts to the site. So my question is, how many years would the turbine have to produce green wind power to compensate for all of the fossil fuels expended just to get it constructed & that's not including the fossil energy required to manufacture all of those parts? At least when you're sailing, you are truly using green wind power. Keep up the great voyages Sam & best of luck for the winter with the reconstruction down in Florida (wish we were there).

As you were leaving the Solent you passed a building around netley where there was a huge hospital where they landed the poor sods from ww1 maybe 2 also.it had its own jetty.may of been so outbound troops didn't see them as they left from southampton.enjoy your vids cheers.

Yes it was largest building in Europe at one time and all now demolished by Soton council in the eraly 60s except for the chapel as you say - built through efforts of Florence Nightingale and Lord Palmerston for the Crimean war and after. Its said US troops drove jeeps up and down the corridors in WWII idk if thats true

Here comes the wave…yep, that’s what happens when you sail down the main channel. Small boat channel is a few 100m to your port. Hurst, where you anchored, is a great spot to overnight. And yes, check the tides or you experience the same issues as when you tried to enter Portsmouth against the tide. Conditions looked perfect (apart from the lack of wind), safe travels

Hey Sam another natural great video thanks! No it's not a german (or admirals cup) mainsheet system. That uses a single block on a cockpit traveller with the mainsheet running forward along the boom on each side then down to turning blocks on the side decks near the mast and back to cockpit winches on each side. Gives very little friction on the traveller block for ease of tacking, but is something of a pain when solo sailing.

Sam keep a tin of fiberglass filler on ya boat it's great for many things but it's also great for patching up holes in exhausts .. it's heat and fire proof ... if used it to fix holes in care exhausts before and the repair has out lasted the rest of the exhaust lol .. you can use it to seal up the elbow leak on yours mate 💪

You saw 2 of our most iconic heritage steamers! Shieldhall, an ex Glasgow sewage disposal vessel, preserved and kept afloat by volunteers and the paddle steamer Waverley that is very sucessful as an excusion steamer around the coasts of the Uk every summer. Little lighthouse on the cliff after Seven Sisters was the Belle Tout which has been moved once back inland and is threatened again now! Those cliffs towards Eastbourne are where some poor souls end their lives by jumping off!

Steamship Shieldhall 3:18 is kind of interesting. Built in 1954 "using technology that dated back to the last quarter of the 19th century and which was obsolete at the time of her construction" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Shieldhall Then at 6:08 was the Paddle Steamer Waverly 1946 (even more obsolete) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS_Waverley kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2i1k35se5uqpJo (The big question is why would anyone have built these ships when they did. Surely the Brits/Scots weren't building 19th century ships to fight the Germans.) When I was in Dorset I mentioned that I'd been told my family name was from there. They looked at me like I was a complete idiot. "There's never been anyone by that name here." One of them suggested, "Maybe you're named after the Isle of Wight." Which at the time made absolutely no sense to me. "Nettles...." When I got interested in sailing I put it together. And watch those exhaust fumes, while less than gasoline engines "Carbon monoxide makes up anywhere from 2% to 12% of diesel exhaust gases." At 20:20 is an Antony Gormley sculpture www.weekendnotes.co.uk/anthony-gormley-iron-man-folkestone/ In Oxford there are figures like this standing ominously on the tops of buildings, and the huge Angel of the North (near Newcastle) is also by him. at 22:18 is a Martello Tower built to watch for Napoleon invading. These are also all over the Irish coast. Your chart says Martello Tower #3, Google Maps has #4 and #5. Hope your grandma's place is coming along. Let her know her grandson is liked and admired by 200,000 people. (And sorry to be such a busy body/know it all. Travel writer Paul Theroux wrote about such a character as being a total jerk.... 'the traveler wants to discover things for themselves,' (paraphrase). I recognized myself. It still hurts.... )

On fuel issues, the simplest thing to do is to change everything (hoses, clamps, filters, pick up etc) but the most likely problem is contaminated fuel). So.....get polishing your fuel ⛽

Beautiful! Interested in your exhaust elbow problem. I'm in the process of rebuilding mine as over the years, the old pipe sections welded onto each other due to the heat. Curious if you were able to replace your leaky section of pipe. Mine is made from galvinized but I think black pipe wrapped is the recommended choice.

If you visit Amsterdam, after leaving Amsterdam, you should go and see Volendam, Edam, on "het Markermeer", then go onto "het IJsselmeer", and then go to Enkhuizen. Then go onto "de waddenzee" to the West Frissian Islands. Terschelling is beautiful! And in Amsterdam they dont sell weed to foreigners, so you know, they do sell it in other municipalities. Yes its strange, but they changed the rules. So its best to try your luck in Enkhuizen. :) They should serve you well. Enkhuizen has a rich seafaring history. Greetings, Jeff

The ‘weird place to anchor’ is Bembridge ledge, a haven for ships to anchor before they take their turn to unload in Portsmouth or Southampton.
