Now here is a happy man. Irrespective of the situation, he is a happy man.

I've been sailing a 17' Grumman with the Gunter rig for many years. It doesn't get a lot of use, partly because we also have a Laser and have had several other boats. When you get into a serious wind you need to get up on the gunnel and hike, otherwise you can't hold it down. You just hope the wind doesn't shift too quickly when you are out there.

That looks like fun. I know this is a very old thread. I am considering a Grumman Sailing Canoe I could purchase locally for $600. It has the mast/spars and rudder, no lee boards, no sail. Over all I think it would be a fair purchase price and I know where to get/ how to manufacture the missing parts. I will add outriggers to mine; but will definitely sail it without until I have them figured. Watching your video helped me decide that owning this boat would be worthwhile. Looks like fun. Thank you.

Its a 18'. I like how you added extra flotation. Adds a little safety without complexity/ weight of outriggers. I am going to copy, Thanks

I am working on a sailing rig for a 16.5 Grumman, so your videos have been very helpful, and encouraging. You did an impressive job handling her in that breeze!

Thanks Andrew. They are really great fun to sail, you really get a feeling of being on the edge. Good luck with your Grumman...

@@lyndonlondon My rig worked out great! Aluminatti stands up in 15 miles per hour with no problem. 55 square feet of sail. She needs a little more rudder in the water, and a little jib to help her tack at lower speeds: my winter project; but otherwise, I couldn't be more pleased! Do your lee-boards vibrate excessively? Mine do at certain speeds and angles.

Lyndon! Boy I'd love your help. I have the sam canoe and have 0 idea how to even start rigging it. Do you have any close pictures of how you hung the sail? Id love to teach my kid to sail someday but am hopelessly lost.

@itsbetterthenwork I look forward to seeing sailing your Grumman. I assume it must be a 17' Grumman. You are correct, the rudder could go down a little deeper, maybe I can change the mounting bracket slightly. They really are great fun to sail...

I recently resurrected my Dads Grumman sail canoe after thirty plus years of collecting dust. It is similar to yours other it has the 65 square foot Gunter rig, you have the 45 square foot Lateen rig. I will video it next time I take it out. One thing I noticed in your video is the rudder is not completely down, it may have come up from water pressure or weeds; you had that boat moving! You will get better performance with it down.

I have a complete Grumman lateen rig with a single longer and wider lee board, picked it up 4 months ago cant wait to get it out just have not found the time. After watching your clip I'm a afraid and may sell it any taker in Wisconsin

The sail, rudder and leeboards were made by Grumman but I believe that they have been discontinued. I made the mast, spar, boom, tiller, mast thwart, leeboard thwart, buoyancy bag. I got the rudder mounting bracket and sail and some other small parts from Ralph Frese at Chicago Canoe Land but I think he's sold his business now. Yes I did have to drill some holes in the gunwales for mast and leeboard adjustments. Outriggers would make it more stable but I like the way it handles as it is...

nicw rig, I am putting a alma on mine to turn it into an outrigger, easy try it then you can really go in that wind.
@lyndonlondon13 жыл бұрын
@itsbetterthenwork Looks good, what size Grumman is it? Mine is a 1550. They really go well in force 4 and above as you can see. Unfortunately my Toyota Lucida that I carry the canoe on is now off the road, so no more sailing for me until next April. I can't wait, it's such good fun...

I could watch this all day...I think I will also give this a try. Would you mind giving the dimensions of your leeboards and are they weighted?
@lyndonlondon6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The leeboards are 39" x 9" in overall dimension. The pivot point is about 35.5" from the bottom of the leeboard. They are not weighted in any way but rely on the amount of force required to move the side of the board itself against/through the water. The sail is 45 square feet. Other dimensions are in other comments.

I am thinking about doing the same thing. Did you buy the sailing kit or made it yourself? How was the rudder/tiller combo mounted on the canoe? Did you have to drill holes? Would the canoe be more stable if the lee boards have a bigger surface? Would outriggers help? Thanks. It sure looks like fun.

Great video. Do you still have the canoe? If so could you post video of the stern rudder fittings and the sail rig thwarts? Cheers!
@lyndonlondon5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I still have the canoe and I have some photos you can have but how do I get them to you? Are you on Facebook? I could message you. Or you could give me your email but do not wring it out in full here, you will get spammed.

Posted video, search for "grumman sailing canoe" kind of light wind but it was only wind we have had in the last two weeks. Also found original grumman sail and rigging instruction. They are posted on Flicker.com in group "CRANNE"

I bought my 15' Grumman canoe in 1978. It's outside on my pickup right now. The sail was like the one in the video, a 45 sq' Lateen. The leeboards and thwart were different. I often sailed with the boom higher and sat further aft. I am looking for a complete sailing rig to buy. Does anyone else ever sail their's standing up?
@grafophone13 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed, it's top of capabilities!!!! You may be unexperienced but you are doing really good in such wind condition. Always remember F5 is top limit for sailing canoe, go to OCSG on the web and look for Beaufort windchart. I always sail canoe with outriggers for peace and stability, thus able to bring camping gear and other stuff. See my vid ''Sailing in perfect conditions'' from my user name (grafophone). Cya buddy.

If you have a lose tooth, just tie the sheet to it and tack. hehe

This is sailing buy the seat of your pants, or, as I also call it, at the ragged edge of disaster ; ) Seriously, though, some of the the Grumman kits can be very effective with a bit of modification. I built my 17 into a trimaran and use the big 64ft gunter rig with a jib. I added a reefing system for conditions like this and keep the pedal to the metal.
