Sailing into History (Istria, Croatia) - Tranquilo Sailing Around the World Ep.4

We've set sail, leaving Slovenia for Croatia. First stop is the northern coast of Croatia, Istria. Istria has a long history. It was the second-most important region of the Roman Empire after Rome, producing wines and olive oil, and the Roman heritage is very apparent in this area.
We sail to Umag and then to Pula, which has the most preserved Roman colosseum ampitheter in the world, and then head out to the secluded and idyllic islands to the south of Istria, Unije, Ist and Molat.

The footage from Uvala Maracol is just incredible. What a fantastic environment to raise kids and enjoy life. If i wasn't already saving up for a yacht, i would be now.

Cheers John. Although the local ranger at Maracol said that in the height of summer you can get up to 170 yachts in the harbour - unbelievable. Then it wouldn't be so ideal!

Hehe, ah well, I'm sure the longer you cruise the more savvy you get with locations and places. I live in Wimbledon, London, and so when the tennis is on and lots of people come to town, i *wish* I could pull up anchor and drift off into the suburbs. No such luck with a house ;-) Anyway, great episode as always. The extra week between ep.3 and 4 was totally worth it :)

Hello from home -Oz, your not missing anything here, what a very pleasant lifestyle your living, so nice to see different places, most sailing youtubers are in the Caribbean, it's become very mundane as they all visit the same places one after the other & sometimes even bumping into each other..not literally! Loving your travels..new Hanse owners ourselves. Also interested in mundane but practical things you discovered in Croatia ..like where you pump out the waste holding tanks, your anchoring techniques with or without snubbers..etc etc

Hi Phil, hope you enjoy sailing your new Hanse! We have an upcoming video where we go into the anchoring in more detail. However not in Croatia there's not many anchorages - coastline tends to be very deep or rocky. However when we could we would anchor, and always use a snubber - the windlass is not strong enough to take big loads, and has slipped once or twice when we pull back to set the anchor. We simply use a 3-ply polyester rope with a chain hook at the end. Regarding waste, we always leave pumping out until far offshore, as there's few pumpout facilities we've come across.

Great info from your video's guys, I loved the last video about the Watt & Sea generator. I am just about to take delivery of my new boat (called Bucket List) and because of film I have had installed the same generator as I am going to be sailing from the U.K. to Lanzarote and then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean so thanks guys Keep up the good work Andrew

Great video, good commentary as well. I just love the Croatian Coast and have sailed there many times myself. Do not miss the Kornati Islands, or Vis, or Brac or Korcula. Also Split, Sibenek,Trogir, Skradin, Milna , Havar, Stari Gard and Palmizana are an absolute must not to mention Dubrovnik as well. Keep up the great work and many happy days on your new boat.

LOL... like the scene in the roman amphitheater where in bygone days men tore themselves apart, and here is your little man, tearing spyders apart... its in our dna.... my son, when we told him he was to young to play with guns, built himself one out of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich... we gave up. lol. Awesome video... just need that wind sock. Like your sailing setup, but don't get to lazy pushing buttons and self tacking jib... lol. that stuff does break from time to time. But you seem quite capable.

We would have loved to but with a new boat which we were still getting a handle on, a 60 nautical mile trip from Piran, and very shallow waters, we didn't want to push it. We've pushed it in the past and it's not something we want to repeat if we can avoid it.

Yes Uaaa Dingding was close, Ed Whimper was Hallberg Rassy 45 from the 90s. Beautifully built, heavy and Rudy said it was very stable. Definitely worth considering if you're looking to cross oceans.

Hi Jeff, yes we do have a tender, an Excel Volante 290. Only mention the brand because it is built like a tank and very stable. We've pushed it up against some sharp rocks and it doesn't have a scratch.

We've had a go at fishing, we're just not doing it right - line too short, maybe the wrong lures - so far only caught an octopus and that one got away... need to try harder, and maybe get better gear....

This is just another nice video. What was the date of the shots? Please pay attention to the Bura wind. It is dangerous and even more powerful than 40kt sometimes. Just make sure you get a good shelter when a strong bura is prognosed. I would like to comment on one historical fact related to Tito, Slovenia, Croati and Balkans war. Tito died in 1980. Slovenia and Croatia became independent in 1991, so no relations to the Tito's death. War in Slovenia lasted only for ten days. No ethnic issues were involved in this ten days war. Consequently Slovenia has little or non to do with Balkans war. Please if you will be arround Hvar islan in the middel of July, let me know. I will be around.

We'd love to but Goran Bregovic is copyrighted! YT has strict policies on what you can use. The opening music is Brazilian, where the name of Tranquilo was inspired from - we've travelled Brazil a lot and loved it, and Tranquilo means chill out in Portuguese.
