Hi Thomas - great to have found your channel. We (Koen and Bella) are located in Singapore and we just upgraded our Bavaria 40 cruiser to a 56. We have started prepping her for more serious sailing and will set sail once we can let go of the rat race. So far you seem the only channel with a larger Bavaria sailing around the world. I will start binge watching your episodes... I am very interested how you managed to solo sail...

Hi there both of you! So happy you managed to find my channel Always wanted to visit Singapore so who knows maybe we meet there one day in the near future. It’s only 4000 or so miles away from where BE FREE is now. I don’t know how many or if there is channels with even larger Bavaria’s out there, but pretty sure they exist. Almost every sailboat has their KZbin channel nowadays. In risk of sounding arrogant wich is not the case, I don’t watch much on KZbin myself. It’s a very simple explanation as making this videos takes so much time, and once uploaded I don’t feel for having more screen time. I’m first of all out sailing and trying to explore and enjoy. At the moment I have company onboard but for many years sailed solo. Much more than shared here because I believed it would be boring to watch. Sailing solo is hard, but size of the boat doesn’t mean that much in my experience. It’s almost easier with bigger boats as you can sleep comfortable even in the cockpit. I had to practice a bit in terms of how to change sails etc. Being alone. It all comes down to technical solutions and setup that’s functional. One example is I had remote control for my winches alluding me to stand at the front and guide the Genoa into the track while hoisting it. Hard button aft at helm station for the windlass and remote as well if needed to observe from deck. Using remote control and electric winches for hoisting sail bags out of the hatch is also something I found functional being alone. The hardest part was always being awake for longer periods in rough weather. But sometimes you just have to fight and be strong. Life is easier with crew, but also more complicated at the same time. I have shared lots of things and thoughts through many older episodes. Thank you so much for being here! Cheers from BE FREE 🍻

I've been looking at boats visiting Tahuata and wondered why so many ended up in that beautiful bay where you ended up. Sailed to the island back 1977 and the main village was not so attractive as now, with the church and all. Harbor was very difficult as there was no pier. After we were there for a few days, we left and went down the coast to what we saw as the "prefect bay" site of a future resort. Then we went inland and shortly after that we were running for our lives being attacked by what we called NO_NO bugs. Never even spent a hour on the beach. Later in Nuka Hiva we met a research crew who were studying the bugs and how they could be controlled. I seem to recall we found some citrus like fruit but never went back for more due to the bugs. We never saw another boat anywhere on the island. I'll tell my shipmate that the dreaded NO_NO bugs are still there and hungry.

Kan én fritt høste frukt ute i terrenget? Hvilke regler gjelder? Og i hvilken grad vokser det fritt?
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Det er alltid lurt å spørre de lokale først. Noen steder er all frukt inkludert kokosnøtter eksklusivt for innbyggere. Andre steder har de mer en de kan spise selv og deler generøst. Byttehandel er alltid en god gest uansett. Takk for spørsmål og for at du ser på⛵️🇳🇴

do you just trust that dolphins will knowingly stay clear of the propeller?
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Yes but we also payed good attention to our speed to not risk anything. They came to play and left when we went to slow. We started totally still sitting to just observe. Then moved as we learned what they wanted. An amazing experience. No dolphins hurt. All the best and thank you for your comment.

@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Sometimes we remember to bring it with us. Its significant less problem here than in the Caribbean so not really a big problem. Don’t remember the brands as we have several. Tried a ecological one but did not work. The ones that works are not so healthy, so we try to minimise the use. All the best

Great video Thomas! Hey, have you heard anything from Rick Moore? They haven't been on youtube for about 5 or 6 weeks.I hope everything is OK with them. You two have fun! From Minnesota, home to many, many Norwegians like me.
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Hi there and thank you so much for kind words and for sharing your concern about Rick. Yes I talk with him frequently and he is having a little but needed break. There is a new video out or pretty soon at least for Patreon’s in the first round. After his little break he will most likely appreciate all the support and help he can get to kick the algorithm again. KZbin algorithm now punish you hard for not being consistent, as also we experienced after the long Pacific crossing. I have actually been in Minnesota and it’s like a BE FREE version of Norway! I liked it a lot, and as you probably know it lives more Norwegians in the US than in Norway 😆 All the best and cheers 🍻

Thomas how are getting on with Starlink there in Polynesia?
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Hi there! It’s a bit mixed. In the Atolls it works flawlessly but had some fallout in between. The sail from Marquises to the Tuamotos it didn’t work at all after 100+ miles offshore. Now on the move to another atoll sailing south east we have full throttle. This answer is made possible by StarLink with the Global Roam 50GB package. At anchor it moves to unlimited automatically. Still a bit Beta feeling about it, but pretty sure it’s improving for every day. StarLink is still not a substitute to Iridium Go or Garmin in reach. I’m gonna ditch Iridium Go and have already terminated predict wind. So as soon I get my hands on a Garmin in reach that’s gonna be my safety backup. StarLink is useless if the life raft is needed. All the best and thank you for being here
