Hi again, Thomas. Nice to see Taiohae Bay in Nuku Hiva through your eyes as I was there last year, especially that sketchy dock. As you are discovering, you just have to adjust to the food situation. It will be the same throughout FP. Eat the local fruits and occasional carrots and potatoes and onions. Enjoy the baguettes and French chocolate, plus the ridiculously cheap tuna ($5 for a kilo). By now you will already have visited the gorgeous Hakatea Bay nearby, also called Daniel's Bay for a long-gone local who welcomed cruisers, although the beach is not quite as nice as your Tahauta one. But please don't perpetuate the online story of the sailor killed there a few years ago, it is a much more convoluted story and does not involve cannibalism. When I was in that bay a solo German sailor arrived and was very quiet, not meeting others. I finally went over to his boat and discovered the murdered sailor was his best friend and he was visiting to see where it happened. Very sad but also not even remotely typical. Instead the locals there are very friendly, offering you lunch or dinner after you hike to the waterfall, and loads of fresh fruit right off their trees when you leave (take a backpack or bag with you for it all). Plus they provide the sweetest fresh water from a tap connected to a pipe from way up in the hills. Enjoy the manta rays that frequent that bay too. I spent a week there and it was a great introduction to French Polynesia.

I’m probably among the more positive mono hull sailors towards catamarans, so I will never say never. However the ones that sails well are out of my reach money wiese. @Thomas, Any issues with your teak decks?
@SailingwithThomas
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Yes I have one strip that’s come loose. I have to look into that when reaching civilisation again. It’s an easy fix but for sure annoying. My comfort is I have had teak deck before that had screws, at least this is only glued and don’t create any leaks. Pro & Cons with everything, and teak deck is beautiful but nothing I would recommend or even wanted myself. Buying a second hand doesn’t always give you exactly what you want.... Anyway thank you so much for watching and for your question. Cheers 🍻

Hi Thomas and Gee. Love the videos. Just wanted to ask about your sun glasses what brand are they ? Which in your opinion are the best?
@SailingwithThomas
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and for being here🙏🏻 The sunglasses are really cheap ones from decathlon. Works well on a boat as they tend to either be stepped on, or lost overboard. So we have a little stock onboard. I used to be a big fan of Oakley sailing glasses, but haven’t had new ones in a long time. Surprisingly I still have one pair that survived sailing for decades. Still in good shape so must have been good quality at least back then. All the best and cheers 🍻

Not as crazy as SA Rand but Norwegian krone is not much to brag about anymore either. I just call it Norwegian Pesetas now... Cheapest place on Earth to buy a lightly used boat (3-4 weeks a year😆) is Norway. Valuta + flooded market. So yes it’s expensive for me as well being outside of Norway with a weak valuta. Cheers 🍻

French Polynesia is a place where food grows everywhere. If you get out into the countryside you can find the deals, and in fact they give food away ! Fruit is extremely plenty full. Regarding your kite surfer, all I can say is , you rascal !
@SailingwithThomas
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and your feedback. Could be your right as we haven’t seen entire Marquises yet, and Polynesia is big. In fact it’s the size of Europe. However so far even at country side it’s been very limited and in the “wild” big posters saying do not touch the fruits or coconuts. Private property and so on. Explanation from those we met it’s difficult to grow tomatoes due to salt air/soil and it’s all imported. Then again we might been at the wrong places and asked the wrong people. Anyway this is our experience so far for what it’s worth. All the best and cheers 🍻

@@SailingwithThomas I've seen one guy successfuly grow peppers onboard, and I'm not sure but it seems like lettuce would be a good pick with the high humidity ect. French Polynesia is a place where inside knowledge is important as so much of it is simply designed to extract tourist dollars (Bora Bora, Tahiti, and I think possibly Morea ) . The lesser known atolls can be cheaper for fruit. Some of them have huge orchards of tropical fruits.You can see the farms on google satellite. I've lived on fruit for months at a time with no ill effects. But, that said, I researched, and was extremely surprised to find out that those who are advising on French Polynesia gave very specific advice regarding what would be expensive and said to OVERSTOCK your BOAT ! Good for me to know as I haven't made it there yet. And, things like canned butter, canned flour without leavening (if you want to bake bread), peanut butter ! and Coffee , take about 20 of each (pounds of coffee!) . Canadian Bacon (canned bacon) . Sour dough for bread with lots of bread flower. One would need to keep an eagle eye, looking for "egg farms" on certain islands, they do exist ! , talking to people about where to go. It sounds worse than Hawaii ! google "Provisioning for French Polynesia For the Crossing: " (although, of course, its a little too late ! ) I've lived in places like this. I flew into them with a crate of tomatoes on my lap, tomatoes were like gold. Most provisions come on provision ships. The big supply ships fill warehouses and take stuff to all the little islands on smaller ships. Each time it changes hands the price is doubled ! If you can find out where the big ships stop first, you might find a way to get things cheaper ? Probably not, just an idea. There will be no room for these places on big tourist islands where hotels take every acre. Other islands have water problems and have trouble getting water to farms. I'll keep researching ! sorry so long...

@GP-fd9ks
@GP-fd9ks Жыл бұрын
Sheesh, what a neanderthal question! First it is none of your business what Thomas's & Gee's relationship is, second in many countries and beliefs a ring on the 3rd finger of the left hand does not mean marriage.
@SailingwithThomas
@SailingwithThomas Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and for the question. Gee’s ring is not an engagement ring nor is it a wedding band. In most European countries you can have rings wherever you want without having any meaning other than it’s just a piece of jewellery. She has only been onboard for 7 months so even though life on a boat is 10 times more intense than on land, it’s still to short time to know a person enough to get married. At least this is my opinion. Non of us feel the need of getting married either, but if so it would been to good not to share here. Hopefully this explanation can sheer som light on this. All the best

Thomas's and Gee's life is made public by them, not by me. I enjoy watching the videos "Sailing with Thomas" very much, and I was going to offer my congratulations. Thanks for the education on rings on the 3rd finger of a woman's left hand in countries other than my own. In my own country, USA, there would be a 90% probability that a woman wearing a ring like Gee's and worn as she wears it, would be married. You seem angry about my question. Perhaps it is time for you to chill a bit. @@GP-fd9ks

Your question is rude, inconsiderate and selfish! Yes, Thomas chooses to share parts of his sailing adventures on his KZbin channel for others enjoyment, but that does not mean all aspects of his life are expected or required to be public! Thomas shares what he is comfortable with and it is poor etiquette, especially in a public space, to ask personal questions. Furthermore, anyone with a KZbin channel must be very cautious what they post and say on a global platform, trolls and unsavory characters lurk everywhere in the world and can pose a serious life threatening risk to them, their friends and guests! By the way, many unmarried females in the USA wear a ring on the third finger of their left hand, especially if they work or volunteer in a public facing profession, it cuts down on fending off frequent unwanted advances from acquaintances and strangers. Not angry, appalled, your question shows a complete lack of respect and consideration for Thomas, his friends and guests!
