@@Sailingconfessions Sorry, no advice there. I will say, about grounding, hitting the keel hard will push the rear up into the hull and break stringers/glass/etc. Very difficult to fix on a double hull boat. Hope it goes well for you! :)

@@RoyBlumenthal You talking about the snubber? The green line in the video?
@RoyBlumenthal
@RoyBlumenthal 2 жыл бұрын
@@thelastpirate The green line right at the beginning? I think you did a rolling hitch to the anchor chain, and an alpine butterfly to the post. No... I'm referring to the bowline you tied on one of your short lines -- a blue one -- at 21:24 in the vid. It's one of your spare utility lines, and you tie it around one of the shrouds (I think). I learned the old slow way... Rabbit hole. Round the tree. Etcetera. The way you did it took about half a blink of an eye, and requires less actual handling of the rope. It kinda looked like a magic trick.

That's a good summary of the most useful knots on a boat. As for my snubber line, I make sure it is a nylon line as it stretches and absorb shocks. Also I keep it longer, until it reaches the top of the water. Cheers, Richard

Excellent James have been constantly watching the various sailing blogs during the pandemic period, and having sailed on racing yachts, the frustration of owners with ropes all over the place, in a safety issue and as you said night time they become trip hazards. Those that have lines coming back into the cockpits, why yachts builders, do not have pockets or areas to stow away there lines in there designs.

I'll not forget Captain Rick's boat having two snubbers and two anchors on the same chain to get through the CAT4 hurricanes he went through ! That was one of the most well done knot trick videos I've ever seen. It will be at the top of the section in the Sailing Tachnology area, probably just below rigging ? I'm not sure I actually have a knot training area, videos are a little rare that are any good. What am I thinking, it goes in the Dyneema where all you videos about Dyneema are stored, close to the top of the playlist. One of the first Categories.

Good line housekeeping vid and I agree with over/under method. I also use a figure 8 as a common stop knot or as a quick way to combine two line ends that can always be undone easily. Sometimes a bridle on the anchor led to both forward cleats. She will sit more quietly in shifting winds. Cheers!

Fantastic video. My dad was fanatical about keeping lines tidy, “spaghetti” on the deck drove him nuts. I too am a fanatic about my lines, and I am thankful for the lessons he taught me nearly 50 years ago. Keeping lines free, clear and ready to go when shit hits the fan is essential. Plus lines are freaking expensive. Proper coiling of lines with offset loops reduces memory and increases their longevity. I like your easygoing tutorials, my dad had a little less patience.

Hey, James... Really dug that alpine hitch.. That quick pull-through knot used on the lifelines to store other lines is called a Lark's Head. On the snubber, why use such much line and have all that to stow every time? Why not use a shorter line with an eye splice at the end to go over the Sampson Post and a hook at the other for the chain... Love these kinds of episodes!
