I absolutely agree with you! After I was diagnosed with cancer in January at age 52, my wife became the first woman in the world to turn to her husband and say, "You're going to buy a bigger boat!" So I went from a sunfish to a Precision 18. We found a mooring 20 minutes away in Wethersfield Cove, connected to the Connecticut River. I spend hours on the boat enjoying the peace and calm letting the chemotherapy do its job. Changed the boat name to "Good Therapy" There's nothing better than getting the sails up and the motor off. Once the jib and main sail are balanced the she is running down the river, I can feel the boat is happy. It's the same feeling that the tree in "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. One more mouth of chemo and we plan to take longer trips down towards Long Island Sound. Thanks for your videos and philosophy.

Wow, it sounds like you’ve been through a lot. But, I know you can see that light at the end of the tunnel, just one short month away. Sailboats always contain a great amount of potential positive energy. It’s great to see a sailboat brought to life and then return the favor. Your giving tree has a lot more to give. We’re not ready to park it on the stump just yet. Weathersfield Cove looks like a great place to start a new journey and a very protected place to return. I wish you the very best and I hope you let me know how your trip goes. Thanks.

I found a half the size log/beam covered with nails in lake Conroe when sailing my Typhoon, at such instant a couple of motorboats pulling inflatable toys with kids passed by the log at full speed and were warned as hard as I could. I asked for help too, none of the boats stopped but they looked to me like I would be crazy or stupid... I ended up securing it to my boat with a rope and bring it to shore, I was able to flatten the nails and with someone's help put it on the side of the road, probably it is till there after a couple of years. I do not want to think the risks those kids were taken.

Thats why I like tillers, there just simple and convenient. Not much goes wrong with a stick and easy to take off when you have guests at the dock where as a wheel is just there and is not going anywhere with out a lot of work .
@smallsailboatbigwater39596 күн бұрын
Definitely. Wheels are also numbing to the feel of the boat. I’ve been sailing on my friend’s Tartan 34 lately. It’s a big boat with a tiller. It’s so well balanced it only takes a fingertip. Pure joy. I sailed a Beneteau 30 something a while back with the wheel and I found it very boring. I’ll never own a sailboat with a wheel. Thanks for watching.

The blue covers on top of your headsail winches are self tailers. You can secure the line in them instead of cleating off. 2-3 wraps on the winch and 1 around the tailer. Watch your lifelines. When the plastic starts cracking and rust bleeds through you are close to failure.
@smallsailboatbigwater39598 ай бұрын
Hello, yes, I use the self tailors occasionally. They are very worn and don’t hold as good as I would like. Usually I like to cross sheet to the cleat. I know my lifelines are not to be trusted. I would like to replace them with the braided lines that I see people doing. That’s a project I’d really like to do. I know how important life lines are. I really appreciate your comment, thank you.

My smallest sailboat was 15 feet, but I would really someday like to sail a true dinghy. Definitely not boring. Thanks for watching.

I refurbed a 27' Pearson Ariel several years ago. Complete makeover with a new 8 hp inboard diesel engine. A couple of years later my arthritis kicked in hard and I could no longer trust myself to manage her. She had over $20K in refurb work, paint, new equipment, etc. and I only got around $4K for her when she sold. I miss that boat all of the time. Sailing is just the most relaxing thing I've ever done....except when it's really hot.

A day on a boat is a good day! If you fall off the boat without a PFD on, it will not be a good day. The chances of you getting back on the boat is near zero, even with a PFD. I have friends tell me they are excellent swimmers. That doesn’t matter when you hit your head on the way over. The only reason you end up in the water without trying is that something went wrong. Be prepared for those times or this could be your last good day on the water.
@smallsailboatbigwater39597 ай бұрын
Good advice here party people. Don’t be like me. Wear your lifejacket. You should wear two. Because I’m not going to wear one, unless the weather is rough. That’s just the way it is. I would consider an automatic inflating one if it’s not too cumbersome. And you will also see me shoeless in all my videos. If safety was first, we would never leave the dock. So remember, safety a close second. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Nice video, have a 22 feet sailing cabin cruiser myself and enjoy retirement too. However two things struck me in you video; one you are not wearing a life vest and swimming after you are hit unconscious by the boom is very difficult and two you are on bare feet in the boat, which to my experience is guaranteed to get your foot injured some day. Greetings Peter
@smallsailboatbigwater39598 ай бұрын
Hello, I’m considering purchasing an automatic inflating lifejacket. But I never wear one unless the weathers really really bad. So if you do see me in a lifejacket, you know those waves have gotten big. As far as shoes on a boat I just don’t think they belong. I get much better grip barefoot. Technically, you may make a good point, but after sailing for 30 years this is just what works for me. I know solo offshore sailors, who don’t wear lifejackets, because if they fell overboard, it would just prolong their eventual death. But I appreciate your concern and your comment. Thanks for watching.
@ximono7 ай бұрын
@@smallsailboatbigwater3959 That's saying something about the mentality of some offshore shorthanders! One thing's for sure, a false sense of security can be dangerous too. It's best to avoid falling overboard alltogether. But I do like the insurance that lifejackets bring when cruising. You never know what will throw you overboard or when it will happen.

Tonight I've sort of been binge watching your videos, which I might add has been fun. In 1975, I moved from Pascagoula, Mississippi, to Houston, where I lived with my brother and his wife while attending first, San Jacinto Junior College followed by two years at the University of Houston. While attending UofH, I worked at Sailboats West that was located at that time on Post Oak just south of the Galleria. Utilizing the old KPRC television studio, we sold a variety of monohulls and catamarans including, if memory serves me right, Com-Pacs. Later Sailboats West moved to Bellaire. Anyway, I sailed (mostly raced) on Galveston Bay for years. After a move in 1984 to New Orleans, then Atlanta in 1986, and finally to Mobile, Alabama, in 1987 where I live (and retired) today. I've owned many sailboats through the years but twelve years ago I purchased a 1996 Beneteau 42s7, which I continue to sail. Your narration is enjoyable and informative as I haven't visited the Clear Lake area in many years. Thank you! Oh, here is a link to my latest cruising video here in my neck of the "sailing woods"......kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqOaaaiiZ9JraZo I hope you enjoy it.

When sailing in Alaska, the big hazard was timber floaters just barely under the surface. You hit that tree and BAM, the damage can be fatal. Nice videos. Entertaining and good camera angles. 100% agree about your philosophy of sailing. I just bought my first sailing vessel. A PSC - Flicka 20. Super Bluewater compact cruiser. At age 65. Are you using “sheet to Tiller” steering? Looks the same, but a bit different. Will start a YT channel soon.
@smallsailboatbigwater39598 ай бұрын
I sometimes have people ask me what my next boat will be, assuming it will be bigger. They are a little surprised when I tell them if I ever do sell my Com Pac 23 I will probably go 3 foot shorter and buy a Flicka 20. I knew a guy who had one with an aft cabin. There is one at the end of my dock that has an enclosed wet head. Tremendous boats that use space wisely. I really wish Hutchins would change the interior of the 23 to be more open like the Flicka. It’s an amazing boat. I’m sure you will enjoy. Thanks for stopping by and watching my video.

you got a video on how you have your lines setup for steering?
@smallsailboatbigwater39597 ай бұрын
I’ve got a video called Remotely Steer Your Boat From Anywhere. And I also show it in this video. I know it’s a long one, but I have a couple shots of it. It’s just a bungee cord going to the tiller, which I adjust the tension with the number of wraps and then opposite that I have a line going to a block located on the rear stanchion and then I take the line anywhere I want to go. This little system has allowed me to take my boat out alone without any worry. I hope you try it and I hope it works out for you like it has for me. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.

Would that floating hazard be something you could report on your vhf channel 9?
@smallsailboatbigwater39597 ай бұрын
I’m not sure about using channel 9. I see a lot of floating stuff in the bay after a storm, but I’ve never seen anything this beefy. I was wondering if I should report it. So I started scrolling and doing a search, while sailing, of what should be done if anything. I saw that the Coast Guard was an option to report a floating hazard to. When I got the boat back, I did some more looking and saw someone had posted a picture of the object on a Texas sailing Facebook page. It looked like a lot of people knew about it. Hopefully no one hit it.
@shemraschke8 ай бұрын
If shes balanced like that you can just run that line from your tiller right to the main sheet. It will follow the wind
@smallsailboatbigwater39598 ай бұрын
That’s true. I’ll try the sheet to tiller method next time out on the bay. Very clever, yet simple, I love it. To me, small sailboat sailing flies in the face of a fast paced and complex world and says, I’ve seen it and I don’t want it. Thanks for watching and passing on a great idea.

I plan on trying the Galveston bay, so it was nice to run across your videos to see what it’s like in a smaller vessel. Do you keep her at a slip or trailer her down each time?
@smallsailboatbigwater39598 ай бұрын
Hello, I keep my boat in a slip tied to a floating dock. I really love the convenience of just walking up, hopping on and going. On the smaller sail like the 80% and under, I believe I can run them either way. With the 100 or the 150 Genoa they should be on the outside. I’ve sailed on bigger boats on the bay and it’s a little boring. The biggest boat you can get is what you want in the Gulf of Mexico, but this 23 footer is perfect for Galveston Bay. I sail a Com Pac 23 mk1. If it was me. I'd start with an inexpensive sailboat around 25' and put miles on it. Those miles will teach you alot. Big boats are complex and expensive. Smaller boats are obtainable, can get you there, while bigger boat skippers stay at the dock with their To Do List in hand. Go small, go now. Best wishes.

Love this video, you have such an inspiring perspective. I want to buy a 22ft yacht but I'm worried about the extra costs that might come with it. Love your editing too, such an entertaining video to watch, keep it up!

I'm giving it my all to make the best videos I can and I love to hear that you liked it. My monthly reoccurring expenses on this boat total $300 a month. $285 Slip Fee, $10 Insurance, $5 Gas Which to a frugal guy like me, is a lot. So I try to make the most of what I get for my money. As well as giving up things that make me sedentary. I just sold all my TV's. for a recent example. I don't want to sit out the rest of the game. If you buy a sailboat that is easy to haul and can be parked in your garage, you're golden. I owned a ComPac 16 and it was perfect for my situation. I ran it with a trolling motor connected to a solar charged battery. You'll know you found the boat that is right for you when it's stress free. Thanks.
@wetland30106 ай бұрын
It's easy to buy a boat but you've got to have somewhere to keep it. Storage, berthing costs makes trailer boats attractive but ONLY if youve got somewhere it doesn't cost to keep it (big yard with access??) My 23ft trailer sailer lies on a mooring ($500yr mooring fees plus $500yr compulsory mooring inspection and service) Boats wear badly and age fast if not used regularly. YMMV
@ivancho58546 ай бұрын
Trailer sailers are much cheaper and more flexible. Dingies are great, but having a space on a boat like this one to get out of the weather is very important. I think that small boats are always more fun than bigger yachts.
