That boat screamed past us coming into Nantucket Harbor between the jetties many years ago in a 20+ kt blow. we were on a 50' Gulfstar making 9 knots with toe rails under water. Great sail from Falmouth MA. She passed us like we were standing still. So close that you could almost touch her boom....maybe 20 feet away. Wish we have iPhones back then to have captured the moment. It was amazing to see and I will never forget it.

In 1987 I was sailing a 37' Brown Sea Runner trimaran on Memorial Day in San Francisco Bay. It was a special day, not just for Memorial day, but that's the day they hold the blessing of the fleet for all the yachts, but more importantly it was also the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate bridge. If it had sails, it was out that day. California's official tall ship, the Californian, was out that day, dicing with Wander Bird. To quote from Kimble Livingston's book "Sailing the Bay" "The wind, minus gusts' at 30 knots". There are few things on this earth more breath taking than two large sailing yachts under full sail in a bucket full of wind. The trimaran was a quick yacht, but those two grand dams were galloping, and putting on a show. The scow schooner Gas Light made an appearance, as well as Hawaiian Chieftain, a replica of a tall ship. And there had to be at least a hundred and fifty to two hundred smaller sail boats out, along with kayaks , wind surfers, kite sailers, anything and everything that could float. I enjoyed taking out fiends who had never sailed before. At first there is a bit of nervousness. But by the end of the day everybody is striking Captain Morgan poses and clammering to go again. All in all it was one of the best days of sailing I've ever had, and the memory is permanently etched in my mind.

Sometime in the late 1980's, I was crewing on a friends day cruiser in the Solent. We had gone round the Isle of Wight and were tacking up the west side. In the distance I saw a single master that looked like a classic racing yacht, but could work out what was wrong with the image. As it got closer it got bigger and bigger, and I realised it was huge. They went passed us flat out and heeled right over. The sound was the proverbial "tearing silk"! It turned out it was "Velsheda".

@@noididnt7972 I was out on the Bay that day on my 9'0" slalom sailboard overpowered on a 4.5m2 sail out of Crissy Field. There was a powerfully gusting 30 knot thermal. The speed of my windsurfer enabled me to dart in and around the sailboats and get a good peek. The night culminated with an awesome (but freezing) fireworks show with the finale consisting of a green fireworks "waterfall of sparks" from the eastern GG bridge span into the water. It was great. I used to keep a windsurfing journal. It is a great read 3 decades hence. Just a minor aside...there were no Kiteboards on the Bay in '87. Did you really take out "Fiends", @no ididnt?

She stopped being a racing boat in 2010 which was when they removed most of the racing specific equipment and changed the rigging, although apparently when she raced the america's cup some critics theorized that she actually needed more ballast so I guess the weight probably doesn't hurt.

@VidarrKerr 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was very surprising for me too. It definitely looks beautiful, but I was expecting a more minimalist, or racing type interior with all the added comforts -- just slick and modern/minimalist -- you could even keep the bidet. The quarters look more like something out of a motor boat.

A good starter boat, something really little without a cabin is the best to learn sailing a boat. Try a Laser or 470 class. And wenn you have them under control, try a bit bigger, and so on. No one can sail a yacht at ones.

Despite the controversial(?) history of "Endeavour", I remember being enthralled reading the account in an edition of "BOAT INTERNATIONAL" of her restoration at the "Royal Huisman"(?) yard in Holland, by American business woman and yacht enthusiast Elisabeth Meyer. It was wonderfully ironic that it should be an American, who had rescued and restored this magnificent yacht from ignomy, which had for many decades been the closest threat the U.S. had faced to it's long standing hold on "The America's Cup". Apparently from what I remember, below decks at the time, "Endeavour" was little more than a cavernous empty space and it was Ms. Meyer in conjunction with the yard who created the sumptuous yet appropriate 1930's yacht style interior. Salutations to Ms. Meyer for her foresight and dedication in restoring a true classic from yachting history...

Green with envy.As a twelve year old sculling around the creeks and rivers of the south coast in my home made pram dingy.I would bee line for the wonderful old racing yachts laid up in their mud berths, stroke their flanks feel their latent power and saddened souls. Promising them they would race again one day, well I was right and thank god for all those folk with deep pockets and big dreams who made my promises come true. You have brought joy to my heart and tears to my eyes and it is more than enough to know that my old girls are out their doing their thing, long may they reign.

I've had the pleasure of being at the helm whilst its 12 crew made everything run smooth in a constant 15kts and rolling swell from Newport to the vineyard. I remember it being a totally different sensation as the 130 foot length meant you would be spanning from one swell to the next. No chance of pinching up as you rose up on one wave and bearing down as you rode down the other side. A boom so wide you can walk down it so they nicknamed it Park Avenue. The chimney in the mast was a crazy specification too. Ended the day feeling like I was wagging my tail.

The original J Class yachts are some of the finest in the world, and by far some of the most beautiful boats ever built. It is sad that on both sides of the pond, many of these beauties were scrapped for the war effort. I only hope that all of the examples of technology and advances can be saved from every generation of AC racing, I see some of these boats sitting....falling apart.....I know they were never built to last....but the history should not be lost.
