Sailing to Avalon on Catalina Island before the world shut down

Episode #138 : A weekend trip to Avalon before the Pandemic Hit America

The next few episodes were filmed in February before the Pandemic took hold of America and California declared the stay at home orders.
On this episode we push off from Los Angeles Harbor for Camille's first trip to Avalon for some diving and hanging out with James' little brother Colby Thorp and our dear friend Jimmy Shannon.
This was our first adventure trip since the haul out and while the winds didn't work in our favor we still had an enjoyable motorsail to the island.

Fantastic motor sailing crossing! Brings back so many memories of our family and it's boating adventures, especially moored beneath to Bell Tower, my lat Mom's absolutely favorite spot in the harbor! I remember leaving Al Larsons sailing under those cranes cause our outboard never started and def not the inboard. Brings back memories of adventure and drama, keep up the awesome videos!

Yeah Catalina actually reopened several weeks ago, we are heading out there as soon as we get our head redesign project to place that allows it.

I used to sail a Catalina 27 out of Redondo Beach. I sailed to Catalina many times but I preferred Two Harbours. Magical mooring.

we prefer two harbors as well but the dive park at Avalon is AMAZING so sometimes we meet dive friends there

so are you moored from the bow and the stern to keep you from swinging? Did you pick up the stern ball first? I'm wondering about that line that James picked up and seemed to be pulling the boat toward the stern. Thanks. ~~ S/V Flekk II

Yeah Catalina really packs in the moorings doesn’t there is very little room between boats. You generally hook the bowline first and quickly take up the “sand line” to secure your stern. As one of the Harbor masters said once “people don’t realize this is a timed event” 😂 if you are not quick enough you will drift into the boat next to you

@@SailorJames it's a simple process very easily done even single-handed on a vessel your size even my 36 foot Catalina sailboat I have done it myself without help from anybody else but of course it is much more stressful. conditions of the sea and wind make a huge difference

How much were they charging you? For a mooring? Not allowed to anchor?

I think we paid $45 a night, the only anchorage at Avalon (and most of Catalina) is in 70+ ft of water and completely unprotected and very far from the dinghy docks. There are a few spots you can anchor is shallow water around the island but not a lot compared to all the mooring fields that have taken up all the good anchorages
