Easily one of my favorite episodes so far. Love that you explain things in simple terms so that us non sailors can understand. Also really enjoyed watching your boat being cleaned. That was super cool. But the thing that I really, really enjoyed was the 300-year-old vessel. I remember reading about it and I think it is just so cool. Thanks, Sam.

The leech line primarily keeps the sail from fluttering but can also be used to fine tune the shape of the sail with cleats or velcro tabs usually at the reefing points. Rumor is the Swedes shake their heads in disbelief at a museum devoted to a poorly designed boat that sank in the harbor on it’s maiden voyage. 😆

Belfast didn't just do the museum, they've nearly staked their entire tourism on a poorly-built ship that sank and killed a bunch of people on its first outing. It's a bit of a sad end to what was a shipbuilding powerhouse, to choose to associate most with the biggest failure.

Sam inspired me to buy my first sailboat. It's a real fixer upper, an old Slipper 17, but it's been fun until my last excursion. 20mph headwind into the mouth of the canal entering the lake, no room to tack, motor wasn't strong enough, got blown into the rocks with hundreds of people looking on. Didn't help there were speedboats and pontoon boats blocking part of the canal, they ram themselves up onto the beach and don't care if they're in the way. I was able to free myself and get back to the boat landing, only for a bunk to break and cross the trailer, so I couldn't haul the boat out. Then a queue of angry people started forming behind me and a guy jumped in to help me get the board out of the way. Going to be licking my wounds and doing repairs for a while before I dare sail again, and the season is almost over now :( Only sail on lakes while I learn, no radio and don't dare sail the ocean even though the boat would be capable.

It is. I came here 30 years ago and never left. The city sits on 14 islands at the meeting point of an archipelago of 25000 islands and a giant meandering lake. Apart from being frozen in the winter it’s a sailer’s dream with almost permanent daylight in the summer.

Leech lines. A flappyy sail is an unhappy sail. Tight enough to stop flapping, but not so tight you hook the leech, which is bad for flow over the sail. Once the vang is on tight, tweak it up just enough to stop flapping. Loving the videos!

Th leech line should be fairly tight for broad reaching or going upwind, downwind I usually loosen is a little bit to give the main and jib more shape. Kind of like a Cunningham or a downhaul but for the aft side of the sail. If somebody else knows more feel free to chime in.

Hey Sam! We made almost the same trip four days ago from Nynäshamn over Mysingen past Dalarö Skans and up towards Ingarö. We went east to Värmdö where you went west over Baggensfjärden and under the Skuru bridge and into Stockholm and Djurgården. Wind and weather seemed to be the same. We noted that we saw almost no motor yachts more than a few small military ones. I think it is due to the high prices of diesel today. In previous years it teemed with motor yachts. Thank you for both pleasant, exciting and educational videos.

Really cool video Sam just say'n. Sorta a spinnaker race- you have to sort that pole problem & the top leach, might have caught them. Now that boat scrubbing dock station- was way cool. That has ground floor investment opportunities when you get back home. 300-year-old school sailing ship- with a questionable design flaw, what could go wrong? The carving detail is extraordinary. Sam the adventure man in downtown Stockholm- thanks for bringing us along with you. Safe journey towards Finland.

Leech cords are exactly that. LIke you mentioned, it tensions the leech which I notice is not usually a consideration for cruisers. Most just let the sails flap and flog. There are also foot cords as well. Higher tech fabrics and sails have these lines to control shape. They aren't just for reducing noise!

I wouldn't normally say this out of being the pot that called the kettle black. But since you asked that leech line is mostly effective when the sail has its original shape. I'm afraid that sail is blown out.... Like mine. I've abandoned using mine beyond keeping the leech from luffing. We adjust that alot on the team I race with.
