I have a little 21' bilge keel over in Essex. It's great to see someone taking a very similar boat out in the open seas. Quite an adventure. Loving your vids too.

Super Fun, have you looked at sheet to tiller steering, no need for an autopilot or power usage. (I emailed you a pdf book) or look for DYI wind vane steering systems. Bet you could make one
@AlexGoesSailing2 жыл бұрын
I did have a quick look but it would be a fair bit of work to get it setup properly and a wind vane wouldn’t fit unfortunately. A tiller pilot is probably my best option since I have so much power onboard!
@tombackhouse91212 жыл бұрын
@@AlexGoesSailing aren't you an engineer? It's a bit of string and a rubber band my dude! Plus, if your autopilot breaks down you're back in the same boat anyway, might as well mess around with it while you're shopping for autopilots, then at least you have an idea what you can jury-rig if the thing craps out and you need to go below to put the kettle on.
@AlexGoesSailing2 жыл бұрын
@@tombackhouse9121 very true but the main issue is the amount of resistance on my tiller. I need to take it apart and see if I can reduce it. If I get the chance to try it out I definitely will be!

Yeah, I bet. Jib sheet tied to tiller with a bungie chord also on tiller to make fine adjustments. I used this method on a snapdragon 23 back in the day. But only works from beam reach to close hauled.

Well done on reaching the Scillies. I have tried twice but sometimes sailing I get seasick like Tom, so I turned back. I'm planning on trying again but will take my diesel rib, should take about and hour and a half at a steady cruising speed 😁

Try a bungie cord. tie it to the port side of the cockpit or stansion, take it to the tiller, depending on how much pressure you have on the rudder, put more wraps of cord around the tiller, start with 3 or 4, then put some tension on the cord and tie it to the stbd side of the boat. This is not perfect but does do quite well. To make fine adjustments, hold the wraps of cord around the tiller and twist like an outboard throttle. Have fun!
